What do you say to someone who claims Saddam is a good man?

I have a rather rabid antiwar friend who insists that Saddam does not have to disarm, that he should not disarm, that the world has no right to tell him to disarm, and that if Iraq disarms America should disarm. I pointed out to him that America has not launched any landgrab invasions in over a hundred years, and that America is not a dictatorship ruled by a bloodthirsty dictator.

His response?

"Saddam is better than Bush."

Dead serious. I'm sorta at a loss for words, right now, but he's like a younger, male version of Jane Fonda in his convictions...hell, were he able, he'd probably be over in Iraq serving as a human shield...

Actually Bush vs Saddam is a tough call.

The fact is that checks and balances on power in the American political system means that Bush doesn't get to play with his big toys like Saddam does. I think its a simple case of penis envy. </flamebait>

Just tell him of the atrocities Saddam commited, in gory detail. Tell of how he heartlessly murdered thousands of Kurd men, women, and children. Advise him to watch one of the videos of people finding the Kurd villages that have been wiped out with bodies lying in the streets. Tell him about how Saddam is a madman dictator who kills any and all that would oppose him in his own country. Tell him of how he has killed family members because they 'threatened' his power.

Oh, and he married his cousin, if I am not mistaken...

If that doesn't get him, then he is truly sick in the head.

Calm down Weemadando, the besides the first part, the rest was directed at Hemlock for ammunition for him to use, Thats why I said "seriously" instead of the usual insults and Ad-homean attacks

It's a false analogy fallacy. Determining how much anyone affects your life is a red-herring, dumbass, since they were discussing WHY Iraq should have to bow to the United Nations to disarm, which we all saw on the Saddam videotapes that he wasn't going to (or, at least, wasn't planning to).

In response to the original question, I would just instruct your friend to move to Iraq. After all, Saddam Hussein promised in his videotape interview with Dan Rather that he would welcome the American people as guests. Speaking of which, Hameru, why don't you do that if you don't find such an idiotic statement idiotic?

I never tried to defend Saddam, I was simply trying to lighten the tone of the thread.

And that dare sounds a lot like some of the shit that I've seen around uni over the past 3 years.
