Possible Cooling Issue
My in-laws' computer has been locking up a few times and I was guessing that it may be a cooling issue.
Here's the screen cap I made. I apologize in advance if the image is too big.
Are these temps too high? If so, where should they be?

Re: Possible Cooling Issue
Your running hot but not extreme. You do not hve enough airflow if you have 105*F internal tempature, as long as your running at room temperature (70*F) your internal case should not be breaking 100*F, 99 is fine above 100*F you need more internal case flow.
Yank the side of your case off, go to wallmart and get one of these for 10$
Problem fixed

Re: Possible Cooling Issue
I've opened up the side panel and the temperature dropped 15 to 20 degrees. The GPU temp hasn't changed.
The room where the computer is located is small but it does have a ceiling fan. Unfortunately I do not think that fan helps much even though it works fine.
What my wife and inlaws have told me that once in a while they hear something like a grinding noise. I can't confirm since I'm hearing impaired. Would that mean a bearing issue with one of the fans? I have checked the fans and they are all working normally that I can tell.

It's not going to either, but that gives you an indication of how little ventilation your computer is getting if you get a 20 degree drop just from yanking the side panel off.Enigma wrote:I've opened up the side panel and the temperature dropped 15 to 20 degrees. The GPU temp hasn't changed.
More likely hard drives working real hard than fan dieing, once a fans starts going it's continuousEnigma wrote: What my wife and inlaws have told me that once in a while they hear something like a grinding noise. Re: Possible Cooling Issue
What kind of fan setup do you have? Are grilles cleaned regularly (dust bunnies can play merry hell with internal temperature)? Unless you live in a really odd climate, you shouldn't need a giant fan pointed at your left-open case to maintain a reasonable working temperature.
Re: Possible Cooling Issue
I've got a fan on the back of the case besides the CPU\GPU\PSU fans. No dust bunnies, just a thin layer of fine dust. I have the case on top of the desk in hopes of improving air flow but as you can see by the temperatures, not very much. The room that it is in is quite confining but it does have a ceiling fan.Terralthra wrote:What kind of fan setup do you have? Re: Possible Cooling Issue
My PSU fan makes a grinding noise once in a while. It's kinda fucked, but knocking the case a bit usually gets it to shut up. I just try to not nudge the tower, ever. That's what usually sets it off.

Re: Possible Cooling Issue
Your blades are off-balance ie one broke. It is so slightly out of balance that it gradually rolls on the bearings due to gyroscopic force, until it rolls enough that it starts tapping against the grille or chassis. Pull the PSU, check if it's an 80mm or 120mm fan, check the connector, replace.

Re: Possible Cooling Issue
Is your in-laws' computer an HP? My desktop had the same problem until I pulled the side cover. It's a Best Buy HP Pavilion with a (slow as constipation) 32 bit OS.
That video proc temp is really high. Can you reroute some of the internal cables?

For a GT 220? Heck no that's almost cool. Some video cards "normal" operating temperature is in the 120*F range and if you throw water cooling them on them you get down to "just" 110*F.Count Chocula wrote:Is your in-laws' computer an HP? Hell my own CPU runs at 109*F (A Sandybridge I-7 2600k running at 4.4 gigs) has never topped 120*F range but my ATI 6970 with extra spiffy triple fan cooler and two case fans dedicated to blowing air over it with two more pulling and it still runs right around there while gaming.

And Mr. Bean gets the techno-nerd gold! Holy shit, I never woulda thought less than 30 degrees from boiling would be normal. In my (weak) defense, my Pavilion is about two years old.

There are no cables in the way of the Vid card. Nothing obstructing any fan whatsoever.Count Chocula wrote:Is your in-laws' computer an HP? My desktop had the same problem until I pulled the side cover. It's a Best Buy HP Pavilion with a (slow as constipation) 32 bit OS.

Their computer is custom built by me. It used to be mine until I got a replacement.

I checked out the temp on my computer and while I haven't had an overheating problem the GPU temp is running at 140 degrees while the CPU (2.4GHz) temp is at 125.6 (side panel still on) comparable to the inlaws' CPU (2.1GHz) temp (side panel off).
Here's the screen cap of my computer temp. Mind you, I haven't a overheating problem with my computer.

Weird. I open up the side panel of my computer and the CPU temp went up two degrees.

Re: Possible Cooling Issue
I cleaned the insides of both computers and so far the CPU temp on mine has dropped to 116 to 118.4 degrees while the GPU temp so far is at 125.6 degrees. That is with the side panel on.
I just checked my inlaws' computer and their CPU temp is at 120 degrees but slowly rising. My guess it'll peak at 125.6 with the side panel left out. The GPU temp so far remains at 107.4 degrees. Much cooler than mine.
Does the 220GT usually run cooler than the 9500GT ?
