Oooh.

Just bought the first one as an ebook.

I shall review in due course.

Well, Homecoming was... very much like season 5, in its good and bad points:
Spoiler
  • Torren Emmagan is very prominent, though still a baby, which means that quite a few scenes detail what's going on with him (and the much reviled Kanaan).
  • The IOA are busy trying to beat their own records of idiocy.
  • Todd, who's left on Atlantis by the finale, is handled well, but his bits slot into a wider take on the wraith that people may or may not like, it's not bad per se, but it's not great.
  • Everytime they write Dick Woolsey, I know I'm not meant to laugh, know lots of people will, and sigh.
  • The new status quo created is interesting but worrying, the story they begin with the wraith has them as more of an advesery, but can't have that much mileage in it.
  • The Genii were well handled.

Sir Not Appearing in this Show.

On balance, I'd say it was pretty good, maybe a 3.5 out of 5, a marked improvement on earlier books, but it is unfortunately saddled with some of the issues that Season 5 had. I would think the series will get better rather than worse.

I was one of the naysayers for SGU when it started, and I still feel pretty ambiguous about it, which is not a great thing for a show in it's second season. Then again, I stuck with it, many of my favorite shows had rough starts til the writers and actors figured out what they were doing. And while it was hard to get behind the feel and the direction of the show, there were flashes of brillance like 'Time' and 'Space/Divided.'

The show has been kind of it's own worst enemy. The episode right after I accepted that Rush wasn't Baltar 2.0 ... he started talking with a hallucination of his dead wife :banghead:

Of course, consistent quality episodes only start airing after the cancelation was announced. Typical.

Regarding the Atlantis book Homecoming, I'd say save your money. Spoiler
There are some good points, like the politics surrounding Atlantis, and who will control it and whether it's better off in Pegasus or the Pacific. In the end, they have to pull a very dirty trick to get the city off the ground. And the question of what to do with Todd, imprison him, let him go, feed him, starve him, dissect him is handled realistically. Other than that though...
Atlantis' hyperdrive breaks down returning to Pegasus, conveniently preventing it's recall by earth. Even more conveniently, it breaks down inside the Pegasus Glaxy and close to a viable (if cold) planet. This leads to another rare good part, Atlantis adapts to it's icy environs, sprouting heaters and covered walkways that were never need in the tropical areas it inhabited during the show. (Well, it was in the Anartic in the pilot, and had presumably been there for some time.)
Other than that, there's some meaningless posturing with the Genii, the Wraith have organized behind a single leader calling herself 'Queen Death,' and on her orders, the Wraith conceive of an elaborate trap purely to capture one Rodney McKay and thus provide the plot hook for the trilogy. There, I just saved you eight bucks and 360 pages of drivel.
Kind of a pity. I've really enjoyed the SG-1 books, and the single Atlantis book I've read. Plus, I'd hoped for some of the 'What's been going on' that we've been missing in SGU. Apparently most of what's been going on is idiocy. Oh, and you can't tell me that after all this time, an expedition that prizes ATA, and Carson's gene therapy Carson and Shepperd are the only two men who can fly the city.

Former SGA producer/writer Martin Gero has confirmed on his Twitter account that all Stargate sets at the Bridge Studios have been struck.

So, that's it. Again, it's been a fun ride.

Live action SG appears to be dead (for the time being, Lucas took his sweet time between the trilogies), but there's always animation.
And given his appearances in SGU, I think we're better off not seeing a live action General O'Neill again.

'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'

Books / Animation - Probably the best way to go but given the Star Wars EU. I expect things will progress to the point it becomes equally shit for being simple copy / paste rip-offs of whats been seen before.

Games - Meh, seem to recall it being tried and failing. That said, SG has plenty of potential to be worked into numerous game types from MMO to FPS. Although the game market is equally filled with tons of shit cash-cow milkers so I dont really want to see Stargate:WOW clone.

Games never reached fruition, except for that one interim FPS I guess. Not quite trying and failing; didn't they run out of money?

Would love to see a Mass Effect style Stargate game though. It seems like a good fit.

I think the closest thing we have to that, unless I'm mistaken, is the Empire At War mods. The Pegasus Chronicles isn't out yet for EAW:FOC, and I'm still waiting for it. It's an aging engine, and having something purpose built for Stargate would be nice. However, given the show's cancellation, I'd say something like that is less likely to ever be seen than ever before.
It's Jodan, not Jordan. If you can't quote it right, I will mock you.

If you want an RTS Stargate mod...

I would suggest getting Sins of a Solar Empire + Expansions. There is a Stargate mod for that complete with Asurans, Tau'ri and Wraith. Lucian Alliance plays the role of the pirates complete with Ha'taks.

Other than that... Stargate could really be developed into a whole host of different games.

FPS - Star Trek Elite Force or Fallout 3
Cue the mods where you can see Carter naked on the latter and have animated sex.

RPG - Mass Effect or Neverwinter Nights
'God' turns out to be a Reaper with an obsession for the name Shepard

MMO - Star Trek Online or EVE Online
STO - Pay $200 to get the Asgard Core Odessey. Alternativelty refer 10 friends and have the subscribe for a month to get it free
EVE - Tauri Battleship level 5 training time: 33 years, time to purchase it: 1 year. Time to lose it: 5 seconds

RTS - Star Trek Armada rip off or Sins of a Solar Empire

I would go with Fallout 3 or a Mass Effect style RPG if you want a 'full' style game complete with the ground portion with story. Then again, it will get dated rather quickly and fall off the map. Long term game would have to be an MMO really and there are way too many of those around lately. Nevermind my disgust at the eventual sell out that will occur if they follow Cryptic / Turbine policy of pay-to-play on top of a subscription.

Has anyone here played Outcast ? It was practically a Stargate game in all but name only. It would be beautiful to see a modern remake using Cryengine 3...

Gameplay balance. The Goa'uld or Lucians deserve a fighting chance, after all. :D

MGM has been really shitty about promoting the stargate game license. They canceled the FPS way back when, even though it was basically done, and they've let the MMO sit in development hell for far too long.

Fortunatly, the Modding community has picked up the slack. I recommend Stargate Invasion or Stargate Empire at war.

Note, for the second, the version for EaW Forces of corruption (called pegasus chronicles) is unreleased, but the version for EaW vanilla is done and fairly polished.

And the window of opportunity has passed. It would have been perfect to release any game during SG-1s closing years of the early years of SGA.

It amazes me how the fanbase has been better at exploiting the SG-1 property in the game department than the company that owns it. Seriously. There are two Half-Life 2 Total conversions that provide a satisfying multiplayer experience, at least two completed RTS mods, with more on the way, and I think someone was even trying to port it into the Freespace source engine for an F-302 simulator.

What has MGM provided? A cancelled FPS, and MMO that'll never be released, and a multi-only team shooter that by all accounts is inferior to the aformentioned HL2 mods. It takes a special sort of idiot to screw up like that.

Hardly surprising. Until recently the show was still ongoing in one form or another with giant 'no-go' areas created due to various projects needing green lit to carry plots forward.

In a situation like that a game is quickly going to be stumbling over no-go areas like folks wanting to know what happened. Mess it up - people get massively pissed just like they did at SGU and if the game railroads folks away in silly ways they equally get pissed. I would say now is the ideal chance to pump out games and tie up the loose ends via those to encourage folk to get it. Star Trek pumped out plenty after the show ended so I wouldnt say SG is screwed for doing games.

That said, the complexity of putting SG into a game could be staggering unless your planning on pumping a considerable amount into developing that aspect.
DS9 got 2 games as I recall
Voyager... got one ?
Star Trek in general got a bunch but it was mostly TNG / TOS related.

Best option for Stargate as an MMO would be an EVE Online copy. Throw in the whole 'Dust' element CCP is trying to include for the ground component and it might work. The alternative is just bit-time games from Stargate Bridge Commander, Stargate Legacy to Stargate Armada. Doubt it will be anytime soon though.

Not to play thread necro, but we have an update on the SG-1/SGA DTV's.

They're still not happening, but Joe Mallozzi is discussing what the basic plot lines were going to be.

He'll be discussing Extinction next week, but he confirms that the plotline for Revolution involved resolution of the disclosure issue; the Stargate Program was going to go public.

Previously, I was more keen on seeing Extinction because I wanted a final closure for the Tau'ri-Wraith conflict. Now I'm equally pissed that Revolution is shelved indefinitely because disclosure needed to happen.

:sigh:

It could have been epic.

Especially since the show already showed us a world where that happened, and how America had to become a virtual dictatorship to control the resulting riots, with implied heavy censure from other nations and/or outright conflict. IIRC there was a shot of F-302's bombing an Irish village for "harboring terrorists."

They'd have had to address that, possibly by revealing that they've been planning how best to go public for years.

AND the NID/Trust conspiracy was the greatest opponent of publicity, since it would anhiliate their plans to exploit the Gate for their own ends. So you could conceivably use the film to bring that particular plot thread to it's overdue conclusion, possibly as a last-gasp effort to suppress the information?

Yeah, it could have been good. It would have been a nice way to end the franchise since that's been the big white elephant in the corner since the beginning.
