I came here right after briefly discussing harmful fundamentalist thought patterns ingrained in me by my parents on a thread in the Girl Talk forum, and mentioning that I feel like I have to actively reprogram my brain to get rid of these patterns and that this makes me mad at my parents. Then I read this post here. And I have to say, I know you were referring to physical or sexual abuse, but when I read it I read it as if it was being raised fundamentalist that you were referring to. Because it fits.

I should point out that I am in no ways saying that being raised fundamentalist is analogous to being sexually abused as a child.
No, but it is analogous to other forms of mental conditioning, some of which are abuse even if not all are.

I have a question. I have heard taht children who are abused, lets say beaten as a form of punishment, will often do this to their children becuse that was how they were raised. Is this true? If so what does this mean for the study?

It dovetails nicely with the study. It means that these peoples' sense of social norms is warped. This means that they are not going to feel traumatized by what happened until they discover the clash with social norms, and it also means that they are more likely to feel that this behaviour is somehow acceptable.

I agree that both psychology and psyquiatry need to get faaaar more scientific.

There are aspects, however, about both that are highly scientific. Namely, studies conducted on hundreds of subjects (people) over longitudinal or transversal periods of time (sometimes several decades), carefully considering all possible variables (as far as those conducting the experiment can think of)...

Those are examples of data obtained through the rigorous use of the scientific method, and should not be disregarded just like that. Also, valuable conclusions and inferences can be derived of them.

There ARE such things as Scientific Psychiatry and Psychology... It's just that a lot of the mainstream is clogged with Freudians (in a variety of flavours) and other charlatans who honestly think they're going right about the study of the human mind.

As a psychologist that's more on the scientific side of things, I apologise for the inconveniences :D

BTW, the data does not contrast previous findings. And, yes, all evidence seems to point that way.

Abuse-derived trauma seems to be -in a significant amount of cases*- a consequence of the social construct.

Wow, so much for scientific methodology.

Surely the whole point of science is that when the results of a study or an experiment are published you check for inconsistencies in the study or in the experiment; you don't attack the scientist personally.

Regardless, I don't understand what these psychologists are complaining about. From my POV, the results of this study have just confirmed something which was, frankly, obvious all along: that the trauma from sexual abuse is not instantaneous, but increases with the realisation by the victim that they have been used; and moreso, that they did not have to do what they were made to do.

AND the societal reaction to what occurred - all too often such children are treated as either damaged goods or troublemakers, and when the grow up the boys are sometimes assumed destined to be abusers as well. Rather like part of the trauma of rape is the reaction of others to the victim, things like saying the victim is wholly or partially at fault (she asked for it type stuff) or treating her as damaged goods, calling her a whore, or in some times and places even killing the victim to maintain the "honor" of the family or whatever. That can't help at all.
