German economy breaking records (again)

Post by Thanas »

Link in German

Basically, Germany's exports in march exceeded the previous recordholder month by 15.8% (April 2010: 88.8 billion EUR, March 2011: 98.3 Billion EUR). Exports to the Eurozone are up 16% and 20% to non-EU countries. Total export from January to March was 260,9 billion EUR. Imports also climbed to new records in march from 74,1 (November 2010) to 79,4 billion EUR.

New prognosis speak of total exports for this year of over a trillion EUR. Unemployment will decrease even more considering more than one million jobs have not been filled.

(I guess we'll have just enough money to bailout more sick EU nations then.)

If only I could speak German I think I'd move there.

Much better prospects than Wales.

EDIT: And now Thanas gets to be all smug for a while because Germany is winning. Oh well

By the way, projections for the entire year 2011 also predict more than a trillion € in exports for Germany.
We also had imports about 79.4 billion € worth in March. That means that we expored 18.9 billion more than we imported in that month alone.

If we go on like that, you'll have to learn german anyway :P

Or the Germans start thinking that they can do a better job in governing other countries to create a German superstate. :)

Enjoy it while it lasts, Germany - we know that no one is on top forever.

And hey, this unemployed person would be happy to retrain and try living in Germany for awhile. Granted, I'll have to learn German, too, and at my age I'll probably have an American accent forever, but I don't find that too scary a task.

I wouldn't go that far. So far, we have triumphed over nothing and nobody. Yes, our economy is generally more solid and (for now) severely outperforming our competitors. Only time will tell if that trend continues. There are reasons to be optimistic, but considering the leaps and bounds china is making.... (of course, the same scare was made about Japan and look where they are now, but still).

I tend to think more in decades than years anyway.

Well, German and Austrian job market has been opened to Central European EU members, beginning this month. Although those who had the qualifications (or dared to work there illegally) and wanted to work there, already get their working permits and work there.

Germany will do just fine until China or whatever the next major manufacturing country is figures out how to build a Siplace Multistar and other such advanced machines. China is a major consumer goods exporter but guess where all their manufacturing equipment comes from? They crank out a bajillion iPods and iPhones but they can't do it without buying billions of dollars of high tech machinery from Germany, Japan, and the US. You'll be fine as long as you keep investing in your manufacturing & industrial sector and keep cranking out the machines that everyone else needs to build the things we need in modern society. Just don't do anything stupid like the US where they outsourced a bunch of their manufacturing and R&D.

To be honest, I think Germany is in a better position than China.

Germany doesn't appear to massive bubbles in it's economy like China does. It doesn't have the possibility of major social unrest if growth slows down (like China) or the problem of massive corruption. China also may run into overcapacity problems (its fixed investment share is almost a whopping 50% of all investment). People like Professor Nouriel Roubini have pointed out that "All historical episodes of excessive investment – including East Asia in the 1990’s – have ended with a financial crisis and/or a long period of slow growth".

As for manufacturing, I have dealt with Chinese products for the rail industry, and to be quite frank their quality control is still incredibly bad. I suspect the much of their heavy manufacturing is the same and has a long way to go.

I say this with no anti-Chinese glee, I would love to see China advance and pull millions out of poverty.

It is in a better position. Germany's only real weakness is a financial sector which has a lot of exposure to bad and potentially bad debts; they hold a disturbingly large amount of Greek, Irish, Portugese and other bonds of questionable quality on their balance sheets along with derivatives & financial instruments based on said bonds. That's a fairly easy problem to fix if they want or need to get serious about it; protect the depositors & business accounts via their deposit insurance programs then perform cramdowns & debt to equity swaps to recapitalize the institutions. If this still isn't enough then nationalize the banks as needed. Problem solved. Everything else is pretty solid.

Overcapacity in China is conflicted (but relatively old) news:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... k.BqEvR4nk

But:
http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90001 ... 74166.html

I suspect it is a real issue that exists today in some sectors. Is it worse than the 'overcapacity problem' that exists in a normal, healthy capitalistic economy? I don't know.
I say this with no anti-Chinese glee, I would love to see China advance and pull millions out of poverty.
I'd love to see them do it too...I just think it will be another 40 years or so. ;)

In other news, more German banks are paying back the bailouts with interest ahead of schedule. One Example, German link.

This bank for example payed back 225 millions already (total bailout was 525) back to the state as well as paying back two billions of state-guaranteed loans.

Yeah, and the reason the financial wolves haven't gone after us yet is because we're widely seen as an extension of the German economy.

I don't have time to trawl through national statistics offices for figures, so sorry for using wikipedia. However, that has the German service sector as 70% of the economy and the UK service sector as 73%. That's not actually all that much of a difference.

However, German exports are massive. They export more than the USA.
