What good is the truth?
What good is the 'truth' if it tells you that you are born worthless, without real choice in this world, and will die. What good is the truth when it tells you are insignificant, easily forgotten and not special. What good is all that.

At least you can't be arrogant
And you DON'T have to think about that all the time. You can think about the positive things, such as how to make yourself a happier person. Speaking personally, I know that all my body parts' net worth are measurable in dollars if not cents, will die, but an insignificant speck that is unlikely to remain in the memories even of other people, and am a mere conglomerate of organic matter that does not even make a particularly good combo (I'm not good in math, sports, art...)
But personally, I value my current ability to perceive the world. I intend to perceive it as long as possible, and making my perception one I'm happier with. That's enough. It does not matter to me in a "real" sense that any happiness I feel are the result of biological and chemical processes - that's an "abstract" concept. Abstract concepts only enter my mind when I try to be philosophical - less than five minutes a day, max.

You can always choose to belief in some comfortable myth or another (you know reincarnation, eternal soul, Etc.) if the reality is too tough for you to handle. You won't be the first one to do so.SWPIGWANG wrote:I hate being merely a biological process...

Who defined this truth?SWPIGWANG wrote:What good is the 'truth' if it tells you that you are born worthless, without real choice in this world, and will die.
According to whose truth? What good is the truth when it tells you are insignificant, easily forgotten and not special.
It tells you that it's time to make your own truth. You don't have to be insignificant, easily forgotten, not special. That is the truth of others: others who do not define their own truth, but follow that of their fellows. Sure, you'll die, but you can make your mark before you do. Define your own truth. Don't let them define it for you. I made that mistake, of believing their truth, but I discovered my own truth and that made all the difference. What good is all that.
So do we all. But that's life. That's the truth. But is it the whole truth?I hate being merely a biological process...
Life is not about "you're born, you live, you die". Life is an ongoing discovery. Go discover your own truth, for however long it takes. And when you do that, discover more truths. And keep on discovering until you can't discover any more.

Personally, I enjoy being a finite organism. That's probably hard for most people to do, but knowing that you have a limited time to do anything gives life a personal sense of importance and the urge to accomplish your goals since you don't have forever to do it.
As for being 'worthless' or flawed, hell, what the hell would life be like if you had nothing to aspire to? Whoop, I'm perfect, nothing left to do. Nah, being a finite and flawed organism kicks ASS, even the part where I get to drag my pitiful arse out of the hole I've dug for it, look down, and give my troubles the Mister Didgit Hand Puppet.

Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.
Happiness is a state of mind. This state doesn't require being significant, immortal, rich, omnipotent, etc. About all you need is contentment. Its about what choices you make; what things you feel you need to be content. Just realise that these things *are* choices, and your natural instincts try to influence these desires. Try not to be a slave to your instincts, understand your emotions and why you have them, and you'll be more happy.

If you feel non-special or worthless, you're not working hard enough. It sounds like you're having problems defining your self worth without it being granted by supernatural magic powers. Being part of a natural biological process is what existence is, trying to read more into it than that is foolhardy, and a waste of valuable time. This is your life, either you make of it what you can, or join the cattle in thinking and doing as they're told.

If free will is ever refuted beyond a shadow of a doubt, I'll shoot myself in protest. Suicide is free will. Biological determinism dictates that you should have self-preservation instincts at all times. So is serial killing. Not too many animals kill others without a good reason.
...This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old...ultraviolence.
Biological determinism can be overridden. Some lack these instincts, other instincts can be tricked, or flatly overidden. Belief in life-after-death is a "trick" to make your fear of death go away (or lessen it).UltraViolence83 wrote:If free will is ever refuted beyond a shadow of a doubt, I'll shoot myself in protest. It could be that you have no choice but to kill yourself. The problem is that if free will doesn't exist, it is determined what you *WANT* to do as well as what you will do.

The best way to not be insignifigant is to not be insignifigant.
If you want to be remembered, then do stuff that will be remembered. Simple.

You want to feel important?
Believe it or not, O my brothers, but we are the big winners of the Grand Cosmic Lotto!
Eons of stellar formations with quanta interactions, planetary aglomeration, nuclear furnaces.
A billion years of chemical randomness, evolution and extinction. Thousands of years of deaths, discoveries, savageries, explorations, conquests and defeats!
All that for an intelligent and industrious lifeform to appear on this Earth so we can begin to see the Universe.
All that and more so we can sit back and say:
It's beautiful...

If you are sentient, you have free will. That's what seperates us from the rest of the animals. We can overcome our instincts; sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.Zoink wrote:It could be that you have no choice but to kill yourself. Regarding life after death, sometimes I'd rather have just a big blank nothing but I don't feel that's how the universe works.
PS: Isn't what you want to do determined by your will?

both, I think. everyone has this option - we are all on death row. you have *nothing* to lose if you drive towards your innermost desires. if those were "unethical", why, what would you lose? we all die, anyway.
for myself, I want to change the world. Ive rped all the evils I could think of - they've lost their taste. but to improve humanity on a global scale; ah, now that is something to aspire to.
