Sons of bitches who think they can stand in the way of progress. Fuck 'em.

If the US wants to bury its head in the sand like that, then it's going to be their own ass when some other country steps up and produces life-changing research. The government only stands to get egg on their faces if they put up such a barrier to research.

Frankly, the one-million dollar fines and ten-year jail terms they want to slap on this shows that this is Galileo all over again.

Ah yes, jail time and fines.

Screw that. Why not go back to burning and sticking heads on pikes.

One of the main problems with American Politics
The Reps are heavly vested with Fundies, The Democrats heavly vested with those Peacenicks who hate Technology

This quote sums up nicely how Democrats and Repubs view Cloning
The issue has divided lawmakers into two camps: those who want to ban all human cloning and those who want an exception for research.

Those assholes even voted to ban tissue research. So, we can't even fucking clone organs that could save millions of lives. I think that "evil" would describe this vote pretty well. Looks like little Timmy who was born with a fucked up heart has to stay on the donor's list.

I'd love it if they were trying to ban ALL biotech in America. The thought of the food industry dying overnight among others would be quite amusing.

I was wondering: What is the point really to clone a human being? I can't see one besides creating replacement organs or for exceptional reproduction choices for infertile/incompatible couples.

Oh, and wouldn't human cloning for research fall under the Nuremburg Code on human experimentation?

These are honest questions. I don't know much about this issue.

Cloning humans is stupid. Cloning human organs however is useful and research must be done, if America bans it then they lose out. The UK, Germany, Australia and Japan will carry on with it instead.

Ah, alright then. Sorry folks, sometimes when I hear "human cloning" I think of fetuses being grown in large vats for the main method of reproduction. I've actually had nightmares of that image.

I'm so paranoid sometimes.

Infertile couples or singles wishing to become parents would benefit from human cloning. And besides, if someone wants to clone himself, who are you to stop him?

Human cloning should be researched so that we can add the knowledge gained to our knowledge base, and thus know more. Knowledge is good.

That and we should do it because we can.

Ugh. You're missing the point.

It's not that we SHOULD clone human beings AOTC-style, it's the fact that we should POSSESS the scientific knowledge to DO IT.

Take splitting the atom - we could build bombs or we could build reactors. These politicians are banning the pursuit of knowledge because of ONE of the potential real-life applications.

You must have noticed that there was, in that story, a proposed ALTERNATE bill which would ban human cloning, but still allow research to be done, and THAT was stricken down. In other words, they're not just banning human cloning, they're banning efforts to LEARN HOW TO DO IT.

And if you're a scientist, you already know that you need to get certain a handle on the fundamentals when on your way to greater discoveries.

*sigh* Once again , Americas lovely government bypasses a perfectly sane rational and unbelievably useful concept as cloning, all thanks to the dumfuck bible thumpers.............Meanwhile thousands die in misery and confusion from Alzheimers and Parkinsons and thousands of children with defective organs will die slow and painfully all so that Billy Q. Bible Belt can sleep sound knowing that ' man hasn't violated Gods plan....' what ever the fuck that is.

I`m against human cloning once you`re dead you`re dead,but i`m a 100% for cloning replacement organs.

Pity really, I was thinking of using America to further my career if I go into genetic engineering.

Durandal: I wouldn't stop anyone wanting to clone themselves, I just hope they enjoy the array of genetic instabilities their clone will inherit.

As far as I know, there have been at least two experiments where they started a clone and then aborted the experiment. We've got the knowldge to do it, and could.

I can understand banning full clones, but banning organs is just stupid...as stupid as seperating blood plasma by race

I am angry about this but just as angry at the PRO cloning lobby as they have not had the balls or intelliegnec to argue their case in a way that would sway the public. When people think of human cloning they automatically imagine a AOTC scenario thanks to sci fi and fundie indiocy. The Pro-Clonist MUST make their case in a way that would be understood by the common man because while they can speak the high medical lingo at the hearings, the sentaors and reps can twist it around with visions of cloned humans and experimentation, blah blah blah.

They need a no nonsense message, like a PSA where they show a girl dying of liver cancer and say "If she had a liver cloned from her own tissue, she would be alive right now." something simple that hits home.

If we lose cloning its because the pro clone lobby botched the pitch. Its a powerful message than any rational human upon thinking about it would have to agree with.
