Beyond Good and Evil (HD)

Post by Chardok »

So I bought this game right before I got L.A. Noire, and I'm thinking I'm putting L.A. Noire on hold for a bit and going back to this game. It's tugged at me in "That way". I was curious - any of you pogues try this game in it's original form, and what did you think of it back then/now?

Beyond Good and Evil has always been a great and under-rated game. Do you have any idea what they changed for the re-release, content wise?

And it's not a 90s interactive movie, so your reaction doesn't surprise me.

Beyond Good & Evil was one of my favorite games of the last generation and I've been dying for the sequel since its announcement. So it's been frustrating that there's been almost no media released to indicate where it is in development, and every how Ubisoft press conference has been saturated with Wii shovelware and Assassin's Creed sequels. I'll definitely be buying the HD remake as soon as the PSN store comes back up, if only to show Ubisoft that people still have an interest in this franchise.

I've replayed BG&E several times over the years and feel it has aged quite well. The gameplay isn't particularly deep or challenging but it's excellent pacing and variety makes up for it. I would go as far as to say that the game could really teach the Legend of Zelda more than a thing or two when it comes to game design. I was particularly impressed by how seamlessly the story and gameplay flowed together with succinct cutscenes and in-game dialogue, and I was annoyed when the mediocre, glorified DVD menu menu that is MGS4 was praised for it's seamless storytelling when BG&E did it better five years earlier. There were also numerous little things that really made the world feel organic like Jade's stern, determined facial expression while sneaking around the Alpha Sections, or the way your partner would give you a friendly wave when you panned your camera across them.

Another thing that really elevated the game for me was the sound design. Not only did it have some of gaming's best music and voice acting in my opinion, but they were used to great effect. For example, when your camera focuses in on evidence of the DomZ abducting people, a tragic melancholy tune comes in, giving the game a very cinematic feel.

I don't mean to sound like such a fanboy, but I feel this game was criminally underrated and I really encourage people to give it a look. There aren't many action adventure games like it these days which is really unfortunate.

How many years later, and we've still yet to see a more elegant text-input UI for a console game.

I really liked the game. It was one of the few games that actually somewhat impressed me with graphics, which by itself was rare (hint: big engine is far from everything, it's far more important how you use it). The movies flowed well with the actual gameplay.

There is supposedly a Beyond Good and Evil 2. However, only cinematic trailers or concept trailers appear to be out.
Credo!

Not a lot. A few sharper textures mostly. Everything else is still as it was down to the high score metagame (your game gives you a code, you enter it on the website and get another code that opens a locked thing in game).

The first half was great, but the second half lost most of the variety of the earlier parts and just became one stealth section after another, which was particularly annoying since the stealth system was completely run-of-the-mill. Still, the game got a lot more right than it did wrong, and I'm really hoping that the sequel hasn't completely evaporated.
