Re: Anti-American sentiments justifiable?
I'd say that non-US citizens get tired of US citizens talking up the US when it isn't that great. The US's 1-12 grade educational system is the worst in the world, for instance...Shinova wrote:The world dislikes/hates/disagrees with America for various reasons, and they differ from different country to country. Are these sentiments justifiable? If some are and some aren't, then elaborate.
And many American tourists behave like ignorant assholes in other countries, including brilliant moves like handing a clerk a huge wad of local currency and asking them to count out how much it is...

Let me put up to you the True reason why the U.S. is hated. If you go to Japan in Okinawa, what do you find? U.S. Troops
If you go to Germany, what trace of the U.S. do you find? U.S. Troops.
If you go to Saudi Arabia, what of the U.S. of A can you find? Yes, even more troops.
Israel.
Turkey.
Iceland.
Guam.
And whose troops do you find in the U.S.? Actually stationed in their own independent bases on our soil? None. The closest any nation even comes to being on our soil is being over here to receive training from the U.S.
The Sun never sets on the American Empire.

So... let me get this right. We take over Japan, force them to change their constitution, have troops stationed in Okinawa, the section of Japan that has had a historical pattern of getting the short end of the stick, simply so that the rest of Japan doesn't have to deal with our troops, who run about there being <from their point of view> obnoxious, boorish, and occasionally raping a local woman. You think they actually agreed to this by something other than duress?
Wait, how about Germany. Talking to my close freind, Ruth, who was raised in germany, she could tell you that germans are taught in their schools self hatred and told many times to review hitler's mistakes. Not to mention there are <laws> that actually limit where one can show the German flag in germany, very rarely will you even see the Iron Eagle emblem.

Saying America is good OR evil is a childish point of view. Some Americans want to establish a Pax America on the World, no doubt on that. One could include Bush & Co in that lot.Tom_Aurum wrote:Okay kids, back on topic. America. Bad or Good. Trying to be Empire.

And Saddam must go! Trying to contain him until his death (like so many pacifists want) will only prolong the suffering of the Iraki people. One of the last weapon of destruction that Saddam Hussein still have is Fear, fear over his people.

I feel another Superpower bender coming on, buggy hunk of crap that the game is. When last I left off, it was 2033 and America had fallen into economic ruin and dictatorship, lost a war with all of Europe, and been occupied by the UK. My Brazil had become the richest nation in the history of the world, with zero taxes in the homeland, and all the money coming from conquered subjects. Like China. Heh heh.

I don't care that people hate America for legitimate wrongs it has committed. Of those things, as an American, I am ashamed.
However, its those people who blame ME or every single American for things we had no control over (like slavery a hundred years ago, taking land away from Indians, etc) or stuff that big corporations do (that I have no control over) or stuff done by elected officials (who I didn't vote for, and even if I did, that doesn't mean they can only act if I agree 100% with them).
I think that some of the hatred of America is based on bigotry and stereotypes, much as some of the hatred in America of other countries or groups is based on that, and misinformation. For example, I'm plenty of people who've watched "Baywatch" or seen Howard Stern has probably thought that America was a cesspool of imorality. We get criticized for all kinds of crap, regardless of our intentions.. the way we dress, the food we eat, the way we talk (backward savages who don't speak "the King's English" or use the metric system exclusively) the music/movies and other entertainment we have, the way we treat "our" women, etc.
For example, Osama Bin Laden's justification for killing American citizens is that we pay taxes (which support our government then does immoral things in his eyes, like sponsor moderate Muslim governments and Israel, and protect oil interests in the middle east). Of course, if a person doesn't pay their taxes here, they go to jail (often to get sodomized or beaten up by some loser).
Some of it is justifiable, but again, it isn't a blank check for bigotry or terrorism. One might as well blame all people of German ancestry for what those guys did in the 1930-40's.
Though, I hear that in some countries, McDonalds food is actually better prepared and uses better ingredients, hence it tastes better. Lucky bums.. ; )
And don't think we don't get a$$hole tourists... ; p

Heh, not everywhere. When I was in Canada people were happy to get their hands on American money, considering how much it was worth. And I read in the paper who a guy got mugged, but when the mugger found out he had only Canadian money, he just said "Forget it, I never touch that stuff."including brilliant moves like handing a clerk a huge wad of local currency and asking them to count out how much it is...

Kentucky Fried Chicken here is pretty good. That's because we don't leave chickens frozen somewhere for 3+ years, then spend 12 hours trying to defrost it, and feed them with so many hormones to make them fat and mass-reproduce... years ago some of my family traveled to the US and tried the KFC and said it tasted like old newspaper. BlergKurgan wrote:Though, I hear that in some countries, McDonalds food is actually better prepared and uses better ingredients, hence it tastes better. Lucky bums.. ; )
I also heard that apples there are very tasteless, because they are created to be extra-red and shiny and round and flawless, not caring whether that makes it taste like raw potato... Why do you people care so much about how food looks instead of how it tastes?

Food quality varies a great deal in the US. I haven't had a decent tomato since I left Ohio.Slartibartfast wrote:Kentucky Fried Chicken here is pretty good. KFC is hit or miss, sometimes individual locations are better than others.
Finding fresh produce is never a problem, but like you said, it can be tasteless. Buying things out of season just because they're available doesn't mean you should, it's a waste of money.
