Ten days after admitting that he lied about sending sexually-charged text messages and photos to women he met online, Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., is preparing to step down.

Re: BREAKING: Weiner Resigning
So, what we've learned here is that if Mr. Weiner says something, you just have to wait 10 days to see if he's telling the truth or not.
More seriously, I'm not sure if this was the right move to make for him or not. If it's because of the pressure it's putting on him and his wife, then yes, resigning is probably the best course of action. If it's because he was simply involved in a scandal, then I'm not so certain it was the best move for him, because I think he can do much more good in the House than whatever he can do outside of it.
Although, this does make me wonder what the fuck he was thinking in the first place; if you put something on the internet, it's always on the internet. I can't wait until we get a set of politicians that understand that, if for no other reason than I don't want to see a politician's junk plastered over every news network in existence.

He probably realised not resigning was untenable once the crossdressing pictures came out. That'll do a number on someone's career

Eh? When did those arise?Duckie wrote:He probably realised not resigning was untenable once the crossdressing pictures came out. That'll do a number on someone's career
Okay, yeah, I see that resigning was probably his best bet, then. I personally don't give a shit what Mr. Weiner wears, but I can see that it makes a political career in the US damn near impossible.

Seriously however there was a suggestion offered on how Mr Weiner could end all of this, use the Vitter example that once you win your seat again people tend to forget everything in Washington, so go to your state government in NY tell them your resigning and that you intend to run in your own special election, if the Voters want to replace you then they are free to do so. In fact it looks better than simply running away as resigning generally is to shut the media up.

Is this the guy who called all Republicans 'wholly owned subsidiaries of the Insurance industry?' Man, it's a shame to see him go if he is.

Re: BREAKING: Weiner Resigning
Goddamnit. Just saw John Boehner call this whole thing an "unnecessary distraction. The American people want us to focus on jobs." What a walking pile of bullshit. If this is a distraction from focusing on jobs, why is the Speaker defending a job killing law like DOMA? I could go on, but we're all well aware of how utter full to the brim with bullshit John Boehner is.
God forbid the Democrats defend one of their members from hypocritical attacks from a party rife with sex scandals. I still maintain he could have gotten through this. There's nothing he's done that 5 Republicans haven't survived before him.
And don't think for a moment that the Republicans are going to let this go. During the midterms, the cries were, "Fire Nancy Pelosi & Anthony Weiner!" A pretty big statement against a representative with no leadership position. The Republicans are going to try to hang this on the Democrats during the 2012 election, and knowing how self-flagellating the Democrats are the Republicans we'll probably succeed.

Still the way the Democratic "leadership" utterly folded and turned on him from day one was disgusting, there are times when I WANT the dems to be a bit more like the GOP.

I really hope he took Olbermann's advice and resigned to run in the special election.

That would be a great PR move. It amounts to a referendum of your constituents on your continued service. Difficult to argue with.

On the other hand Gerry Studs remained in office a decade after his scandal which involved actual sex with an underage intern. Meanwhile Chris Lee did the same exact thing as ex-Congressman Weiner and he too resigned.Mr Bean wrote:Unless your RepublicanAkhlut wrote:

Re: BREAKING: Weiner Resigning
Chris Lee did more than Weiner did, the difference being Chris Lee was trying to hook up with several people in his local area and there's some hints he might have pursued one of those relationships. He was actively attempting to in some way cheat on his wife. Mr Weiner sent pictures of his junk to women on the internet and at best these relationships can be described as phone sex level at best. Chris Lee moved beyond that.General Mung Beans wrote:

Also Chris Lee was a huge family values guy so he's got the hypocrisy angle as well, plus the fact someone of the people Lee was after were transsexuals which depending on your point of view might also be a gay relationship as well.

What kills me is, Weiner's own party is out for his blood, yet Charlie Rangel gets to still hang out in Congress in spite of breaking actual laws.eion wrote: God forbid the Democrats defend one of their members from hypocritical attacks from a party rife with sex scandals. I half expect that Rangel probably has some dirt on the Democratic leadership in Congress (and Vitter for the Republican ones).Skylon wrote:What kills me is, Weiner's own party is out for his blood, yet Charlie Rangel gets to still hang out in Congress in spite of breaking actual laws.eion wrote: God forbid the Democrats defend one of their members from hypocritical attacks from a party rife with sex scandals. Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.
Re: BREAKING: Weiner Resigning
Weiner's anti-corporate theatrics and aggressive manner of speaking, I suspect, probably made the Democratic leadership uncomfortable. What many Americans seem to forget is that the Dems are by no stretch of the imagination leftist - they're simply not openly evil, openly pro-corporate Christ-crazy vermin like the Republicans and look more reasonable than they should as a result.
The Democratic Party has been a party of pussies for as long as I can remember, as well, so I'm inclined to think that Weiner saying memorable but nasty things like "the Republican Party is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the insurance industry" probably made them feel a wittle shaken up.
Add to that the fact that this is an embarassing, highly visible scandal and that the Rethugs love (and are masters of) ad hominem, and I'm not surprised he ended up tossing in the towel. I'm still pissed at the weird little asshole by endangering the increasing anti-corporate, anti-right sentiment in American voters by going out and doing all this stupid fucking shit.
