Do you want me to produce the voting records of the representatives/senators, or would you be happy with articles detailing the people who signed the "no taxes" pledge?

Do you even live in California? Do you have any idea how high a profile this budget debate has been? Steinberg TOLD them there'd be retailiation, if there constituents don't like it, they should have told their reps to agree to the special election.

Hey Questor, which half of the state do you think is more important to the other? As a non native but decade long resident I tend to think that because more people live down here that Southern California would have that distinction but I don't feel comfortable making that claim outright what with San Jose's growth and a lot of money in businesses up North.

For me, Northern California. We have the governmental heart and Silicon Valley.

Oh, and Carmel too.

However, 2-3 = -1.

http://www.watchsonomacounty.com/2011/0 ... tax-hikes/
Democrats are shy by two votes in the Assembly and three votes in the Senate of the two-thirds majority needed to put the tax measures on a special election ballot — a linchpin in Brown’s plan to solve California’s $25 billion budget deficit.
State Senate Districts 36 [Republican], 37 [Republican], 40 [Democrat].

Please explain where you are creating 3 Senate votes from 2 Republican Seats turning coat to vote with the Democrats? One of those districts has a Riverside majority voting population. The other two don't.

http://www.smdailyjournal.com/article_p ... %20control
SACRAMENTO — Now that Republican lawmakers have voted against a renewal of expiring tax hikes, Democrats are turning to another, more complex way to generate revenue.

A bill proposed by state Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and narrowly approved last week would dramatically expand the taxing powers of local governments, school boards and other jurisdictions.

But the bill, SB23-1X, would lead to such a complicated latticework of taxes that opponents say Steinberg is merely pulling a stunt to ramp up pressure against Republican lawmakers.

The Sacra-mento Dem-ocrat said his legislation would give public schools and law enforcement agencies a firmer source of funding if lawmakers don’t come up with one directly.

It would grant sweeping authority to local governments to raise money, with voter approval, through taxes on income, vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, medical marijuana, soda and companies that pump oil in California.

Steinberg introduced his local tax proposal on Friday, soon after the defeat in the Senate of the main bill to renew temporary increases in the statewide sales and vehicle taxes that will expire June 30. It passed, but with only the bare 21-vote majority needed. One Democrat voted against it and three others abstained.
There are fewer Senate Seats in Riverside County than Democrats who abstained and/or voted against measures that would allow tax increases.

So once again, can you prove you can get a 2/3rds majority in the State Senate with the Republicans with -any- Riverside voters turning coat?

Seperating CA into halves is silly. For the first thing, anyone who looks at a congressional map of california and compares it with the actual congressional representatives, or looks at the voting record will see that for everyone more than a county or two from the coast, there's no difference between north and south.

For the second, the separating the parts of the state's economy would do more damage than good.

Now if you want to look at something interesting, let's talk about kicking the inland counties out of the state. I can see everyone in the coastal areas voting for that (and since most of California lives in the coastal areas, it's going to win with just the coastal areas).

It's really funny how many people, including how many californians, Think that the Oregon border's a few miles north of San Francisco Bay, and the Nevada border is just on the other side of the mountains from the coast.

Can a someone please tell me what kaeneth is asking?

Is he asking how I get the votes using Riverside County Republicans?

A: I realize that one seat changed hands since January, which is when that article is from, leaving 2 and 2 necessary in both houses.

B: I realize Tom Harmon is termed out, and he needs Democrats to confirm him to be a judge.

C: I also realize that the 31st, 36th and 37th state senate districts are all at least partially in Riverside County, and held by Republicans.

D. So I have +2 (Harmon's going to turn coat if he can make it pass, he's not stupid and doesn't want anything from the Tea Party or from CTPA)

E. The 64th, 65th, 71st, and 80th assembly districts are all Republican-held and at least partially in Riverside County.

F. That gives me +2 in both the Assembly and the Senate. I can hold the election now. (Or I could even pass the taxes if I wanted to).

Is that what you were asking?

Oh,
There are fewer Senate Seats in Riverside County than Democrats who abstained and/or voted against measures that would allow tax increases.

So once again, can you prove you can get a 2/3rds majority in the State Senate with the Republicans with -any- Riverside voters turning coat?
You really think that you can compare a vote everyone knows is going to fail to something that isn't? Are you that crazy?

Here's a hint, if they vote against it and it was going to fail anyway, they can still say they voted against it, most voters don't actually look that close.

Here's another thought.

LA County is more than 25% of the population of the State of California. Let's see what it looks like if we break California on the nice east/west line north of SLO, Kern, and San Bernardino Counties.

LA County - 9.8 Million
SLO County - .3 Million
Kern County - .8 Million
San Bernardino County - 2 Million
Ventura County - .8 Million
Santa Barbara County - .4 Million
Riverside County - 2.2 Million
Orange County - 3 Million
San Diego County - 3 Million
Imperial County - .2 Million

So that's 22.5 Million total population, and if you assume that the votes go the same way they did for Governor in 2010, then LA, Santa Barbara and Imperial are Blue (10.4 mil) and all the others are Red (11.1)

Compare that to the 2008 top of Ticket (Obama), where democrats won every county in the group except Kern and Orange County, and it looks like a lot of counties are swing counties.

BTW: 2004 looked exactly like 2010, so did 2004. In 1996, Clinton also pulled in San Bernardino, and Ventura. In 1992 it looked the same as 2008. So it looks to me like a strong Democrat top of ticket's going to do very well in "South California" and a weak one's still not getting deep south-level massacred. Why are we caring about this again?

Do you know what the word 'passed' means?

ProTip: The opposite of Failed.

You seem to feel that is 'crazy talk'. And that the measure in question did not pass the State Senate.

So I'm done trying to have a conversation with you.

I'm sorry, you're right. Next time I'm having a conversation with you I'll remember that I'm dealing with an utter moron who can't understand what he's typing.

I assumed that you were referring to ABx1 18, the bridge tax, but I should have made sure that - since you are an idiot - you weren't referring to something completely unrelated (except insofar as it was retaliation for the failure of ABx1 18) in an attempt to create confusion.

Do you understand the difference between a bill that directly raises taxes in the CA legislature and a bill that allows Local Government Entities to raise taxes after a 2/3 majority vote? One requires 50%+1, and the other requires 66%.

I'd also like to hear your expert analysis of why you think the local government taxation bill has anything to do with how people would vote on the budget bill.

Well since we are from the same county I wanted your opinion but I felt it prudent to elaborate on my background so as not to appear disingenuous

Ok, the Southern Half of the state can leave, Us in the North will just make deals with Nevada to really screw LA, San Diego, Bakersfield, etc. in the price of water....

Here is the thing I missed previously, apparently the would be secessionists wouldn't want LA County to be a part of their new state because LA has a lot of Democrats. Still, I can't see San Diego or Orange counties going anywhere near this.

That's just insane.

How could you possibly draw the borders in such a way as to make that make sense? The line I drew was nice and straight.
