Otto von Habsburg-Lothringen dies at 98

Post by LaCroix »

Article

Otto von Habsburg-Lothringen, a man who helped the fall of the Iron Curtain and one of the biggest advocates of an united Europe, which always was one of his biggest dreams he had worked tirelessly for, has died.

Emperor Otto is dead, long live Emperor Karl!
A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

I met him once when he was visiting the United States. The area where I live was settled by large numbers of Austrian immigrants, and he came here to the backside of nowhere for that reason; I played in a string quartet at that time and we were engaged to play for the formal reception. We didn't talk for very long, really only exchanged pleasantries, but he seemed a nice enough gentleman. I'm sorry to hear the news.

That is a real shame. From all the deposed nobility, he seemed to be the one most earnest in working for the betterment of Europe. One of the last proponents of noblesse oblige.

I hope his funeral will be worthy of the man.

Yes, he was the embodiment of the benevolent monarch you would want to have.

He will be carried to the Kapuzinergruft next sunday, and his heart will go to Györ next monday, as family tradition demands.

Since the wikipedia page didn't explain it: What are the purposes of the various crypts? I mean I understand about removing viscera to embalm the body, but why did they start separating all the individual pieces? Was there a significant or symbolic reason or was it just a prestige thing?

Iirc it carries back to the reliquae, meaning that the heart of a catholic monarch is sacred.

EDIT: And Europeans do not enbalm people.

And she is probably close to being the only one as well. Embalming was done very sporadically and usually only if the body had to travel before being buried.

Enbalming is not performed in European cemetaries and some outright forbid it, as the graves are reused ever 30 years or so.

What uniforms are the pallbearers wearing?
El Moose Monstero: That would be the winning song at Eurovision. I still say the Moldovans were more fun. And that one about the Apricot Tree.
That said...it is growing on me.
Thanas: It is one of those songs that kinda get stuck in your head so if you hear it several times, you actually grow to like it.
General Zod: It's the musical version of Stockholm syndrome.

On a similar note, what's the older gentleman at the front of the pallbearers wearing? More specifically, what's it's significance?

That'd be a more entertaining explanation for why they're burying the Otto's heart separate from his body.
