7.5 is both the newest and most powerful. 6.5 and 7 are more than good enough for most purposes. Just avoid anything earlier; 6 is extremely unstable and the earlier versions are well behind the times.

Yes, avoid LW6.0. Years ago when my school was rolling out LW6 to replace LW5.x, half the graphics team rebelled and put the old version on(!) because LW6 was so buggy.
