Oh god, where did I put my paper on how feminism was a modern Frankenstein? I had a ton of good resources for that... Meh, I'll find it later.

Modern Feminism is split between the ultraleft and the middle left. Soem ultra feminists see symbolism in things of extremely sexual nature because it harkens back to older symbolism of fertility, and there has been an equating of older society with male dominance, because it was male dominated.
They do have a point, who's to say this wasn't symbolic in some sense?
But they place too much emphasis on searching out these symbols. The Washington Monument, missles, guns, etc are easy to use as phallic symbols, hell Dr. Strangelove made this in an off hand way according to some(Yeeeeeeeeeehhhaaaayipeeeeeeyee-BOOOM).(Of course in A Clockwork Orange had a bit of the old in out in out routine as well) They're goal originally was equality, and they think that expression of sexuality is furthering the gap by creating male dominance in society, which does still exist but it is far subtler than they imagine.(Though there is some pretty obvious stuff, that CNN commercial with the "record scratch") The problem is that they cannot make discriminations between good sexuality and dominance based sexuality, nonsymbolism and symbolism. They come off as being domineering because they are determined to "wipe out" male dominance in society towards their goal of equality, but they go about it by being destructive and thus domineering and counterproductive.
I am a whole-hearted supporter of constructive/moderate feminism, building women's rights in human society. The fact that radicalism is seen so much is the fault of the media, moderates will be doing all the real work. Mostly getting out the vote.
I am also a whole-hearted supporter of Bonobos which have the best most-stable societal structure on the planet. The Answer to everything is sex. The Question? Well that was sex too.(It would be funny to see fundies looking at bonobos. "Aw they think they's people. Hey WAIT you aren't married, You'll gota HEYLL FOR THAT. STOP IT!!")

However, she does make a point with the Washington Monument - the monolith is actually an old phallic symbol, which dates back to the Babylonians and perhaps even the Sumerians.

True story, you'll love this: I was exiting the sports centre after a good swim, some six years ago. I opened the door to the outside and, looking over my shoulder, saw a woman coming up behind me. Politely, I waited with my hand on the open door so that she wouldn't have it slam in her face.

Instead of walking through, she stopped in the foyer about five feet back and fairly screamed at me, "What, do you think I can't OPEN the door myself, you fucking male jerk? Where do you get off treating me like a physical inferior???"

I remember saying something noncommittant, like, "Fuck you, bitch", and letting the door go. Not three seconds later, she pushed the door open and yelled after me, "You could have HIT me with that door, you PRICK! I can see you're not polite enough to HOLD THE DOOR for someone, either!!! PRICK!!!"

I swear, the use of nuclear weapons is NOT overkill.

Maybe that particular woman had a very twisted sense of humour. Or she just liked to insult others.

On-topic i think that this extreme feminism is way over the top. I remember once when i worked in politics i was sitting at the party conference with the manager of my office in Stormount. She was pretty nice but a rabid feminist. In the Bar after the conference i was buying her a few drinks as i was horny and wanted to cop off with her. She spent the whole night talking about how she's been opressed by this that and the other. I listened to her because i'm like that, i still listend 2 hours later when my attraction for her had died a horriable death. But then i made a vital mistake. I told her that if she wanted sexual equality why didn't she make a start and try buying a drink. She looked at me lost for words momentarially, then she slapped me in the face and called me a male cheauvinist. WTF? It seems to me that these extreme femanists only want equality when it suits them.

Wow, that's quite a double standard. And I'm sure there are some women that say pronography is degrading to women, then say that it's discriminatory that women have to wear tops.

It's not that simple. Militant feminists are women who feel that they have been wronged by men, and that women have been wronged by men throughout history. Factually speaking, they are correct on the latter count; women throughout history have suffered greatly at the hands of men. However, that is history, and their real problem is that they can't or won't get over it, so they are hypersensitive to any perception of misogynism or male supremacy imagery in modern society.

I would say that there are still a lot of sexists out there, and that women have not achieved equality (and may never achieve equality; there are, as politically unacceptable as this is to say, sound albeit ruthless reasons to regard a female as a higher-risk employee than a male, who does not get pregnant and is much less likely to take extended parental time off work as a result). However, incoherent ranting about everything being a symbol of male oppression is no better than "black rage" ranting about everything being the fault of "the white man".

It's fueled by real, legitimate facts but it's driven by an outraged sense of historical injustice rather than a utilitarian desire to solve problems in the here and now. As a result, it creates more problems rather than solving them.
