Science for idiots

Post by Ryag Han »

sorry if i misspell anything, but i just came from this youtube video with this creationist dude called Andrew Gulick, who just failed at even basic science.

just a few of the shit he pulled out:

1)Noa had to bring only 16,000 animals on the ark, not species, animals. he think there are just 8000 specie in the world.
2)Carbon dating is nonsense because...i didn't get this part. sorry.
3)we still have Cambrian era species. not their taxonomic Phylum, but SPECIES. yeah. no one told him the difference between a Cambrian mollusk and a modern one.
4)no transitional fossils...yeah.
5) light got from millions and billions of light years faster because quote
even here on Earth time runs at different speeds in different places.there's more mass, more gravity, so more speed cuz...
he didn't give any explanation whatsoever.
6)spiral galaxies are impossible cuz they spin to fast. therefore they all have to be less that 1 million years old.
7)planets should be made of hydrogen like the sun...gas giants anyone? Jupiter having two and a half times the mass of all the other planets in our Solar System combined, and is made of mostly FUCKING HYDROGEN!
8.) something about how because some planets and moons rotate backwards supporting a young universe.
9)Ice in the Solar System being
clear, and crystal ans shiny
(seriously, that's what he said) showing a young universe.
10) Genesis.Com is better source of information than actual science sites.

i am so dam iritated right now, i can't even think straight!

Didn't you know? The universe is barely 70,000 years old. It was merely built to look like it had been around for billions of years by the Creators (sorry, just finished reading Pratchett's Strata again  )
And I'm sorry, there's more than 4,000 species of mammals in the world today. Even ignoring the problems of breeding a whole new animal population from a single set of parents, what about the insects? Arachnidae? Birds? Reptiles? I guess Noah could afford to ignore fish and seagoing mammals because they already lived in the water anyway, but what about all the rest?
But who cares about those pesky facts when Faith tells you what you want to hear.

Fortunately for our world, what you believe in actually coming true merely by virtue of you believing it so far seems to be the exclusive property of fictional universes.

Morons like that guy give Christians a bad name. In the immortal words of our own Mike Wong, an honest Christian admits that he has nothing but his faith. That's all I need.

That would be a terrible idea. Beside the obvious of inflation, you'd basically be dumping so much garbage all over the world that it can't be good for the environment. Also, it depends on what you define as money. Raining gold bricks would be kind of awesome for the survivors but really shitty for whoever they lands on. Actually, it'd suck anyway because of all the property damage from a hail of really dense metal. I'd do the spherical masses of gold thing but I really don't want to do the math.

On topic, this is why I don't bother talking to creationists anymore. There was one recently who tried to disprove evolution using Protocols of the Elders of Zion. My only reaction was :banghead:.

Alas, I am depressed that there is no facepalm smiley.

I just want to know what the carnivores ate while their prey species built themselves up to a population capable of sustaining the meat eaters. And why animals like the sloth are found so far away from the ark's resting point. You'd think the sloths would just colonize an area close by given that they are not suited to long distance movement.

We're talking about a myth that would either have Mount Ararat still 4000 metres underwater or plenty of other mountains above sea level after the flood. The Bible and real world history don't mesh well. Yeah, that comes as a surprise. :D

That's why I don't treat anything in the first five books of the Bible as anything other than an elaborate creation myth. Marginally interesting reading apart from Numbers and Leviticus, but that's about it. The later in time you go (in English Bibles, the further to the right), the less distortion there is. Even the New Testament is suspect though, because translators' and transcribers' personal agendas and mistakes always creep in.

That's why modern archaeologists in the Middle East use the Bible only as a secondary reference, and always cross-reference with what contemporary cultures were saying. Jericho? Earthquake that the Israelites later took credit for. Exodus? Myth propagated by disaffected Canaanites who wanted to believe they were better than the despots they'd overthrown. But the House of David? Confirmed by an Egyptian monument by Pharaoh Merneptah, who said he "killed the king of the House of David."

(As reference, I point you to an episode of PBS's NOVA, "The Bible's Buried Secrets".)

here's what my discussion with one from this vid:

me:
for fuck sake what an uneducated idiot this guy is. no evidence for evolution? mountains of fossils (ALL of which are transitional fossils mind you). Dogs undergo micro evolution, but in science (REAL SCIENCE) there is no difference between micro and macro evolution. micro evolution leads to macro evolution. an example of this is ring species. go check it out. two species that by
him
you are a liar. mountains of transitional fossils? less than 300 transitional fossils exist and all of them are highly debated as if they really are transitionals. billions of found fossils exist and no proven transitionals exist.
me
i guess only an uneducated can't get the idea that EVERY SINGLE FOSSIL is transitional. get your information from actual science sites.

him
oh are you alluding to the same old tired idea that all fossils are transitional since offspring is a mix of the parents genes, thus making a "transitional" lifeform? how ignorant. you know what a transitional would be. its a guanlong evolving into a 40 foot t-rex. its macro evo i want to see, not the mixing of genes which has nothing to do with random mutations + natural selection.
me
wow, you thought a long time of that? no, YOU do not get to defy a what a transitional fossil is. scientists do. and you can watch the evolution guanlong evolving into t-rex. check out the Tyrannosauridae family of teropods, which is actually quite rich. and yes, every life form IS a transitional species, by fucking definition you uneducated idiot. people like you who expect an absolute complete set of fossils of every single species ever need to just understand how fucking rare this process is.
him
well of course you wouldnt talk to me like that in person because i would smack your face off you little punk. but anyway, you are an 18 year old internet tough guy who knows nothing. lots of theropods and no missing links except for guanlong. not very good odds and no, all fossils are not transitionals so you get the education smart ass.
(yeah...)
me
two words: fuck off. smack me? well, i guess when you can't make a logical and reasonable argument, that's what you. ALL fossils ARE transitional, go get a fucking education. again, the process of fossilization is so rare that only an extremely small amount of specimens will ever fossilize. VERY few. evolution is a continuing process, so right now, unfortunately for the future of our species, YOU are a transitional organism dump ass. EVERY SINGLE ANIMAL, EVER, IS TRANSITIONAL.
then this other creationist jumps in
Please clean your language when communicating your views. If all animals are transitional then please define transitional. One must have an animal to transition from, like a cat, and an animal to transition to, like a dog, then, the transitional fossils would be the many minute changing stages from the starting animal to the animal it transitioned to. Even Darwin stated that there weren't any, as well as others after him. There are no transitional fossils between kinds of animals.
from this point on i definitely knew i was in the wrong place for a debate, as they just shit out of their mouth and ignore my every comment. so i just told him
first, define 'kind'. there's no such think in science. second, a simple fucking google search would tell you everything you could ever want to know about transitional fossils.
Wikipedia: go to List of transitional fossils for the EXAMPLES you want, cuz those are the most prominent fossils of transitions between Invertebrates to Fish, of Bony Fish, Fish to Tetrapods, Amphibians to early reptiles, Dinosaurs to birds, and do not dare come back saying those don't count or other bullshit like that

oh, and just for you to know, Darwin wasn't a fucking paleontologist, he was a Naturalist dealing with LIVING animals. he didn't had much knowledge of fossils. to take that as proof that evolution isn't true is like to say Newton's theory isn't real cuz he didn't understand the concept of folding space and gravitons.

oh, and just two years after Darwin made the theory, they DID find a transitional fossil, as you would define it.
what a waste of fucking computing power. these guys don't even know how rare fossils are, and they demand that i listen to them and not scientists who made it their life works.

Nevertheless it can be fun to humiliate them on youtube. I once got a right wing wanker to shut up by using their own rhetoric against them, by saying if they don't like the way the country is going (because his side lost the election) they can get out of the country, and having a disclaimer that this only works when the right wing use it. :D

Oh yes, shouting matches can be fun. I've had some pretty epic ones against some of the local far-right idiots. I remember when one admitted that Hitler was a pretty nice guy, with Greek ancestors to boot. Or another, a long time ago, going on and on about ancient secret Greek Illuminati-like organizations with future tech and unlimited funds. His excuses on why they didn't help the Motherland on *insert disaster here* got hilarious after a while. :D

Just don't go there looking for intelligence, and you'll be fine.

it wasn't quite intelligence that i was after, just some god dammed LITTLE knowledge. those people didn't even know what evolution is for fuck sake, he asked i show him evidence of a dog-cat transition. intelligence doesn't have much to do with basic understanding of a mechanism, but these guys lacked even that.

anyway, they stopped responding after they realized they have absolutely no ground on the matter. seriously, i just hate intellectual laziness. makes me wanna punch something!
