Book advice

Post by Captain tycho »

I was wondering, is Terry Pratchett's Discworld series any good?
I've been eyeing his books at the local bookstore, but they are quite expensive, so I was wondering if they were worth getting.

They're very nice.

The books themselves, especially the later ones, are well written.

They are also very, very funny. He parodies the world and the fantasy genre in them...He's got thousands of references to other books and movies and RL events.

He's got great commentary on life...Jingo talks about how stupid jingoism can be, and Small Gods discusses the basis of religion. And he manages to do it while being funny...

I recommend looking at one or two books in the store to see what you think. I recommend them.

Yes, I'd say they're good . . . very good. But don't take our word for it, get off yer ass and go patronize your local public library. You pay for it through your tax dollars, so use it! And if you do like his stuff, then pay a visit to the local bookstore.

Problem is my library doesn't stock them. :(

Ah well. I'll just buy them. I just wanted to know I wasn't gonna spend money on useless bullshit. :)
Due to your opinions, I'm buying them. :P

Highly recommended. I myself favor the Watch books.

I reccomend them.

If you want :

Lots of fantasy stuff: Read books with Rincewind and/or the wizards in (Colour of Magic, Light Fantastic, Sourcery)
Not so much fantasy: The city watch books (Guards Guards, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, Fifth Elephant)
Practically no fantasy at all: Night Watch (newest one)
A humourous look at religion: Small Gods
A humourous look at War : Jingo
A humourous look at Australia (not ment in anyway to slag off Aussies): The last Continent

And of course there's many other things, but i can't be arsed listing them. And remember:

Veni, Vermini, Vomini - the definitive phrase of life!

If you're into some pretty heavy sociopolitical thinking and philosophy, try the Witch books (Equal Rites, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade).

Maskerade's heavy thinking and philosophy? Maybe the bit at the end, but apart from that i can't see it (!!!!!). Also:

A humourus partial parody of Shakespear (macbeth) : Wyrd Sisters

Whoops, maybe not as such in that. There's more talk about self-esteem issues really.

Be sure to find the DVDs to the Wyrd Sisters series, the two "Physics of Discworld" textbooks, Nanny Og's Cookbook, the quiz books and map journals and the three videogames (Discworld, Discworld II: Missing... Presumed...?! and Discworld Noir).

Those are hard to come by in America. I'll have to recruit some UK friends to find them for me.

Don't forget that Soul Music was turned into a animated series as well. I've still got that taped from when it was broadcast on TV. (I taped other Wyrd Sisters though.)

Classic Beatles parody in Soul Music: "We're more popular than cheeses."

The Soul Music cartoon was odd...

Of course it was odd, it's Discworld! Although not all the DW novels are odd, in fact some of them are quite sane.

You want odd? I'll give you odd: The Last Continent
