Favorit Scy-fi Scene

ok, so last week i finished Battlestar Galactica, and after the episode Exodus, part 2, season 3, i have to say the scene when Galactica jumps inside the atmosphere of New Caprica, plunges to the ground engulfed in fire, launching Vipers... it was AWESOME! one of my favorite scenes in all of the sci-fi genre, and probably television in general.

so i ask you now, what's your favorite scene?

My 'favourite scenes' in science fiction generally don't invovle spaceships. They're stuff like the destruction of Blake's 7, the climax of Dark City, or the watch scene in Utopia.

The climax of Blade Runner, when Roy Batty saves Decker's life and then delivers his "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe" eulogy as he's dying. One of the most beautiful moments in SF cinema.

no reason other than to save thousands of people (last ones mind you) from the cylons. no reason other than they otherwise had a blockade of basestars to fight...alone! it's pure awesome!

One of my favorites is the end of Babylon 5's last episode, Sleeping in Light, once Sheridan arrives at Coriana 6. Though the whole episode is great.

Cool FX are way more awesome than actual plots, yeah. If only they'd dropped the fighters without melting their ship to all fuck?

Ps by 'blockade' do you mean 'two'. When four showed up, they were domed - good thing they ruined their sensors before the fight, huh?

Maybe not a very original answer, but I pretty consistently tear up with the death of Spock.

Me: BWAAAAAAHHHHH!

The dialogue, the performances, the music, the thematic buildup to his sacrifice, all come together beautifully.

Whilst the death of Spock was awesome, I saw it on a DVD a long time after it was made, so it had much less impact for me.

Biggs is dead, Wedge had to withdraw, Luke is about to become another fatality in the futile struggle against the Empire-whereupon Han arrives and saves everybody's day by blasting Vader and his cohorts.

B5, 'Severed Dreams'
B5 has just managed to fight off an EarthForce attack-barely-, another EarthForce task force arrives, B5 is essentially screwed-and Delenn shows up with 3 Minbari war cruisers, basically telling the EarthForce vessels they can go home or they can have the Earth/Minbari war round two.

And, of course, nuWho's 'Bad Wolf'. 'No.' 'EXPLAIN YOURSELF!' 'I said No.' 'What IS THE MEANING OF THIS NEGATIVE?' 'It means no.' 'BUT SHE WILL BE DESTROYED!' 'No. Cause this is what I'm going to do. I'm gonna rescue her. I'm gonna save Rose Tyler from the middle of a Dalek fleet, and then I'm gonna save the Earth, and then, just to finish you off, I'm gonna wash every stinking Dalek out of the sky!'
'BUT YOU HAVE NO WEAPONS, NO DEFENSES, NO PLAN!' 'Yeah. And doesn't that scare you to death. Rose?-I'm coming to get you.'

I always liked the bit in Sunshine when Capa jumped from the Icarus 2 to the SUNBOMB. Yeah, that movie had a lot of problems, but they framed that one particular scene very well, IMO.

Listing every awesome sci-fi scene you've ever seen is folly, but around here we will always remember Red Dwarf's cow vindaloo. That and JFK assassinating JFK. Good times.

That whole sequence is pretty powerful; when he falls and can't get up because the suit is for EVA, that was powerful stuff.

There is a trend for English actors to spit when emotinoal. This may be a key technology for drama.

Carter is traumatized from being controlled by a Goa'uld, and unresponsive until Cassandra comes to see her. (SG-1)

Bishop doing his damnedest every step of the way, despite the cost to himself. (Aliens)

That One Scene from Children of Men. You know, the long one.

The T-800 lowering himself into the lava (T-2).

Call me a hopeless romantic, but I liked the scene in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" (Firefly) where Inara kisses an unconscious Mal. That whole series had a lot of great scenes.

On the other hand, I like action scenes, too. The scene near the end of "Serenity" (pilot, not movie) where Patience has the rifle pointed at Mal and Zoe over the back of her horse:

PATIENCE: Mal! Don't you take another step!

* Mal shoots horse. Horse falls on top of Patience. Mal walks up and levels his pistol in her face. *

MAL: Now I did a job, and I ain't got nothin' but trouble since I did it, so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job... *takes bag of money from Patience* ... and then I get paid. Go run your little world.

Of the few Stargate episodes I've seen, two ending scenes are among my favorites. SG-1: "The Pegasus Project," where the Odyssey beams a nuke aboard the pursuing Wraith hiveship, blowing it up, triggering a reaction through their gate, triggering the supergate, which blows apart an Ori dreadnought.

And I don't know the episode, but it's the one where the other civilization tries to send a bioweapon to Earth through a gate, they block it by closing the iris, and O'Neill remarks that he's glad the list of gate addresses he gave them earlier started with a black hole and went downhill from there.

I've also seen reruns of the original Battlestar Galactica (the one with Dirk Benedict as Starbuck) on the network that was until recently Retro TV. There was a scene in one episode where Starbuck and his CO (can't remember the name) plant charges on the outside of the Galactica, intending to blow holes in the hull and put out a fire via explosive decompression.

And of course, there's always the stupid comedic scene. In The Phantom Menace, Boss Nass makes Jar Jar a "bombad general," and Jar Jar promptly faints.

He had also gotten slashed to the chest by Pinbacker or whatever the dude's name was. So when he fell he fell onto his wound. But he gets up, because billions of people are counting on him. Really powerful stuff. The music was awesome and it was used earlier in the film during Kaneda's exit scene. 'Kaneda- WHAT DO YOU SEE?!?!?'

People have mentioned Spock's death but I'd also like to mention his 'resurrection' in the next film. When he asks Kirk questions and they're all standing there wondering if he's really come back or not, and then he says 'Jim. Your name... is Jim.' Then they all rush to hug him!

Anyway there are heaps of awesome scenes in sci-fi. 2001 had a few of them - from the ape-man tossing the thigh-bone up into the air cut to the orbital weapons platform deftly capturing three million years of evolution in a single instant of film, to Dave Bowman entering Discovery via the side without a helmet, and to his eventual 'murder' of HAL.

Alien and Aliens had a lot too. Kane's death was horrifying, Dallas' death was like 'oh shit - the stereotypical sci-fi hero captain is dead, anyone can be next!', and Ripley's conversation with Mother and Ash with the whole 'all priorities rescinded' revelation, that this whole side-trip was intended by the Company from the outset and that they had been thrown under the bus by corporate interests. The same thing happens again in Aliens only on a larger scale- whole families destroyed by what the Company decided to do. (although Aliens makes it out to be Burke's responsibility) When they went into the hive for the first time and one of the colonists was still 'alive' just in time for a chestburster to come out, you realise how futile the whole rescue mission was. Then all the marines get their asses kicked.

Star Wars- Luke arriving back at his homestead too late to do anything except mourn his Uncle and Aunt. Empire- 'I... I don't believe it!' 'That is why you fail.' Jedi- Luke snapping at Vader and owning him in the fight, and ending it by chopping his hand off. The Emperor is cackling with delight because he thinks he's got Luke. Luke looks down at his father, looks at his severed hand with the bionics visible, looks at his hand realising he's becoming just like him, and finally rejecting the dark side completely. Everything else about the ending is awesome too, like when Vader tosses the Emperor down the bottomless pit to when he takes the mask off and sees Luke and Luke sees him for what he really is - an old man who's dying.

one scene i like is when Jack tells senator Kinsey his names has two Ls....and holds up 3 fingers, basically giving him the middle one. O'Neill ftw! that guy has so many epic scenes.

Oh fuck yeah, the scene with Space Cillian manning up while the music is amping up and we see awesome ass panoramic cuts of the Icarus and the sun and all that jazz, that was just beautifully done. Say what you will about Danny Boyle's movies, but when you've got him doing the cinematography and those John Murphy musics play up, it's pretty damn beautiful.

"I lost my son!" from Window of Opportunity, SG-1. That was a great scene. Man, Jack.

And Uncle Bob's death in T2. What a way to go.

Gattaca is chock full of awesome scenes. I think the part where Vincent swims against his brother, and his brother nearly drowns, while musacs play out loudly. That was great.

A few of mine have been mentioned here already (Sunshine's scene coupled with the music was definitely one of the most awesome in recent memory) but here are two more:

Luke looking on at the twin suns of Tatooine as the Williams score surges around him, it happens to me my mom's favorite scene as well. That was the scene watching as a 5 year old on that special summer when the movie premiered that made me fall in love with the francise and sci fi in general.

However nothing beats te goosebumps I always get with the scene from Babylon 5 when Sheridan is in the pit on Zhadum and Lorien is trying to convince him that he has to let go and find something worth living for. The goosebumps start right when Sheriden says:

Sheridan: It's... getting darker.
Lorien: I know. You're close, friend. Very close. It's easy to find something worth dying for. Do you have anything worth living for?
Sheridan: I can't see you anymore.
Lorien: As it should be.
Sheridan: What if I fall? How will I know if you'll catch me?
Lorien: I caught you before.
Sheridan: What if I die?
Lorien: I cannot create life, but I can breathe on the remaining embers. It may not work.
Sheridan: But I can hope.
Lorien: Hope is all we have.

You add in the absolutely beautiful music by Franke in this scene and its goosebumpville every single time.

Some really great scenes being mentioned here (I have to second the Sheridan/Lorien conversation, and add Sheridan's return- "I'm better now.")

I've always really liked John Lithgow's performance of the 'I miss green' speech from 2010. To me, it brings a great deal of humanity into the film.

But the most awesome scene for me (albeit from a musical) had to be the scene in Ziltoid the Omniscient, at the end of Ziltoidia Attax.
After his warlords have devstated the armies of Earth, Ziltoid descends from the sky, dazzling the remainder of humanity with his four-dimensional guitar playing and forcing them to worship him as 'the greatest guitar player that is ever to have lived'.
