Unfortunately, virtually all of the writers that fandom really loves to squee over (Cornell, Gaiman, Rob Shearman) have said that they have absolutely zero interest in taking on a full-time television job. Besides, the BBC wouldn't give the job to someone who once wrote an episode that the fans liked; it'd go to someone with a proven track record in television production. The most likely candidates I can think of are Toby Whithouse, Phil Ford and possibly even Helen Raynor, who apparently would have become the new showrunner had Moffat declined the offer to take over from RTD.Big Orange wrote:I wonder what've happened if Paul Cornell was in charge instead? But quite likely he's next in line anyway; I really dug Neil Gaiman's episode but he's unsuitable as a show runner, since he kinda ballsed up Neverwhere, an obscure for a good reason 1990s show).

Wasn't sure if this warranted its own thread since its still in the speculation stage, not confirmed to be happening. So I'll post it here.

Think a Victorian Silurian spin-off from Doctor Who sounds like a good idea? Steven Moffat agrees
Did you watch Doctor Who’s mid-series finale “A Good Man Goes To War” and sense some serious spin-off potential in Victorian lady-lizard Madame Vastra and her katana-twirling maidservant Jenny?
You weren’t alone.
“I instantly pitched it to Ben Stephenson [Controller, Drama Commissioning],” showrunner Steven Moffat exclusively tells SFX. “He just said ‘…Yes!’. And then I said ‘I obviously don’t have time to do this…’ [laughs].”
But our screens may not have seen the last of the sapphically-charged 19th Century investigators.
“I think I might revisit them,” reveals Moffat. “They were great fun to write. Obviously the first person to think about a spin-off was me, when I was writing ‘A Good Man Goes To War’… A Victorian Silurian? Her lesbian maid? Come on!
“I was pleased by the reaction to them, but not surprised. They really cut through as characters, given how little screentime they had. I certainly wouldn’t be averse to them returning. It’s just a thing that worked, isn’t it? I love that Victorian setting, and having kicked it out of Sherlock Holmes I can always kick it in somewhere else!”

I can see it getting EVEN FURTHER than the Jago and Litefoot spinoff!
Regarding 'fan writers', Cornell and Shearman have both written some absolute piles of fannish garbage over the years, and I'm not sure (even if they magically knew how to run a television production) that they'd be any goddamn good.

Which DEM by the Grand Moff? I didn't mind the Pandorica restarting the Universe and may be part of a bigger plan by the bad guys yet to be revealed, but I didn't think too fondly of Amy wishing the Doctor back into existance.Stark wrote:What does 'stewardship of the show' even mean, when he's just pressed the 'make my characters awesome' button? I was able to swallow the wish explanation, that Amy had lived her life in close proximity to the crack and had been saturated with wibbley-wobbley-timey-wimey wish energy.

Sorry I stopped reading right here.Big Orange wrote:Which DEM by the Grand Moff? I didn't mind the Pandorica restarting the Universe....
People hang shit on the other finales (and rightly so) and Moffatt's first finale LITERALLY DESTROYED THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE, but oh it's okay it was RESET EXACTLY THE SAME PHEW.
PS, this was fucking IDENTICAL to the PREVIOUS FINALE! What DEM, they ask me? They only destroyed the universe and recreated an exactly the same one, which made everything that happened go away. Way better than that RTD guy, am I right? No cheap finales under THE STEWARD! The seneschal, if you will, of quality!
The best part for me, of course, is that it was Moffatt's personal Jack Harkness that caused the destruction of the universe; because god knows, any crap story can be made worse by Yet Another Mary Sue, especially if it involves Yet Another Cavalcade of Characters.
At least Jack was pretty.

What was the deal with River wearing an eyepatch?
I get the feeling more and more now that the Doctor faked his death with the Impossible Astronaut somehow. I don't know how he did it but I'm sure he did.
The big bang 2.0 didn't bother me so much - time machine that can go anywhere exploding everywhere and destroying the universe (and the Doctor is always saying that something might rip a hole in the fabric of space and time and implode the universe - guess what, he wasn't always joking). Then you have a magic light that restores things to their previous state like an undo button, so you chuck the light into the exploding time machine so it shines everywhere at once and fixes everything. As silly as it was I was actually shouting at the screen for them to do just that before they even suggested it, so it didn't bug me when they did do it.
What did bug me was the Doctor ghosting backwards through time, can't be seen but can be heard, and being stuck on the 'wrong side' of the cracks despite the fact that the 'other side' of the cracks are complete nonexistance. That didn't even make insane troll logic sense. I'll still take it over a Metacrisis and a Blow Up the Daleks Button any day of the week.
Oh, also,

Okay, everyone knows I loathe River with a passion, so I'm equally loathe to defend her in any way, but in what way exactly is she responsible for destroying the universe? It was made pretty clear that some unknown force took control of the TARDIS and forced it to blow up. River just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The best part for me, of course, is that it was Moffatt's personal Jack Harkness that caused the destruction of the universe; because god knows, any crap story can be made worse by Yet Another Mary Sue, especially if it involves Yet Another Cavalcade of Characters.

Of course it seems silly out of context, but within the premise of Doctor Who, its actually logical. I also love it because is their a more bad ass way to die than piloting an inescapable prison into an exploding time machine to restart the universe? I'm also impressed by the way Eleven faces his possible end- he's calm, dignified, and goes out with a smile on his face. That sequence is the Doctor's finest hour. The big bang 2.0 didn't bother me so much - time machine that can go anywhere exploding everywhere and destroying the universe (and the Doctor is always saying that something might rip a hole in the fabric of space and time and implode the universe - guess what, he wasn't always joking). Actually, he could be seen and heard. He talks to Amy during the events of "Flesh and Stone" as I recall. What did bug me was the Doctor ghosting backwards through time, can't be seen but can be heard,

I agree, definitely one of my favourite finales.
Re: New Doctor Who Trailer for series 6 part II (spoilers):
I just meant that whereas it looks as if some enemy/villain was responsible and actually killed the Doctor, I believe that the astronaut was in colusion with the Doctor (if not the Doctor himself) and that his 'death' was staged by him intentionally for some reason. The Romulan Republic wrote:Well, there's no bloody way they're going to kill off the Doctor.
Yes, and that was when she had her eyes closed to avoid the Angel killing and taking over her. Prior to that he saw her in the TARDIS and then on the street and shouted out to her. She clearly heard him but couldn't see him even while looking directly at him. At least that's what I thought was happening, maybe I remembered it wrong.Actually, he could be seen and heard. The Big Bang was awesome because it undid most of the idiocy of Rusty's tenure: now nobody on modern Earth remembers aliens!

Entirely uninspiring. And yay! Contrived drama because the doctor 'knows' he's going to 'die.'
Sad. Apart from the Sontaran episodes. S5 was pretty solid. S6 has been entirely stupid or forgettable aside from Neil Gaiman's episode.

Eyepatch Lady is obviously River Song. And am I the only one disappointed in what Moffat did with River?

Eyepatch Lady being River Song doesn't make much sense. Considering she dies while she's young enough to still look like Alex Kingston. Maybe the eye patch is some kind of device like the Solid Eye in MGS 4 to give River a reason to wear it one episode.

There's no reason River can't have multiple appearances given she is part Time Lord and apparently has the ability to regenerate.Crazedwraith wrote:Eyepatch Lady being River Song doesn't make much sense. But yeah I suppose. Kingston!River's Death in Forest of the Dead precludes regeneration but if eyepatch lady an incarnation before Kingston that could work.

Ummm...after the Big Bang 2.0, is River even still fated to die on the Library world?
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."
Corrax Entry 7:17: So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again.

Re: New Doctor Who Trailer for series 6 part II (spoilers):
I think Personal timelines means it can't since in the Doctor's past but I'm sure they could handwave that if they wanted. I hope they don't, it would kinda cement the idea of River's mary-sue-dom
Re: New Doctor Who Trailer for series 6 part II (spoilers):
'Fated' is a pretty stupid word for something that already happened.
Would it really be any worse than Library implying an extended and emotionally involving relationship between River and the Doctor that is quickly running out of time to exist, even putting aside she's so stupid she didn't realise 10 = uh oh? 'Sometime in the future we'll be very happy' 'by that I mean I'll show up and destroy the universe a bit then become evil, which will be reset by awful writing'.

I'm going to agree with Revy and ask what you mean about River destroying the universe. Because I don't remember it happening that way. So explain yourself or I'll have to conclude you're simply trolling.
Re: New Doctor Who Trailer for series 6 part II (spoilers):
From these trailers, it is making it obvious that the eyepatch lady and River Song is the same person but I think River wearing the eyepatch is just misdirection. I honestly think it has something to do with the Silence. That it beams a picture of them into the head of whomever is wearing the eyepatch so they can always remember them.
