So, I've been thinking about a new fanfic (I know about The Time of Reckoning - the problem was that I couldn't sustain the necessary levels of insanity to continue writing) and one idea that keeps returning to me is the idea of a medium-ish warband of Chaos Space Marines (I'm thinking Word Bearers - blame it on me reading Dark Apostle recently) adrift in some other setting. So, I ask of this board - what's a good setting to throw them in? I need something that isn't powerful enough to squash them like a bug, but is strong enough to put up a decent fight and have some chance of victory.
Fantasy settings are usable as well, I don't particularly care, but it needs to be a setting that I can easily research - obscurity isn't what I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance!

I'd suggest Macross: they have the firepower, but your average colony fleet doesn't have the experienced crews to use it well (unless the crews includes an high percentage of Zentradi survivors from Vrlitwhai's fleet or the Meltlandi from that fleet encountered in Macross 7: Encore). Just don't put them against the Macross 7 fleet: if Max gets back on a fighter (and last time it happened he used the best available to the UN Spacy), the enemy will be pretty much squished, as shown in a Macross 7 episode: the Varauta forces were stopping the UN Spacy assault, then he went on his VF-22 and completed the mission in record time while shooting down half of the enemy fighters without anyone understanding what was shooting down those fighters, and even made it look easy.

And thats without Miriya on his wing. If the two of them arm up and decide it's time to rock and roll, whole fleets will be crushed.lord Martiya wrote:I'd suggest Macross: they have the firepower, but your average colony fleet doesn't have the experienced crews to use it well (unless the crews includes an high percentage of Zentradi survivors from Vrlitwhai's fleet or the Meltlandi from that fleet encountered in Macross 7: Encore). I don't know much about 40K, but I understand that Star Wars is often considered to be on a level with them. Of course, you seem to be thinking of a smallish group without support from their own universe, so if you put them in Star Wars, better make it the Old Republic around Episode One, when there's less chance of a rapid, large-scale military response.Lord_Of_Change 9 wrote:So, I've been thinking about a new fanfic (I know about The Time of Reckoning - the problem was that I couldn't sustain the necessary levels of insanity to continue writing) and one idea that keeps returning to me is the idea of a medium-ish warband of Chaos Space Marines (I'm thinking Word Bearers - blame it on me reading Dark Apostle recently) adrift in some other setting. Maybe Honor Harrington as well (though I do not consider myself a fan of the series) as while they're not, I think, generally held to be in the same league in space as Star Wars, they do the whole power armor thing like 40K, and they're pretty heavily militarized. Plus they'll have numbers and a home turf advantage.
For Fantasy, I'll nominate The Wheel of Time as a good match. The One Power in Wheel of Time is really fucking dangerous. Regular channellers can potentially handle dozens of soldiers alone. The most powerful channeller, with the aid of a certain artifact, could have destroyed the world (unaided, he can simply wipe a good-sized army off the map). However, channellers are relatively rare, and their ordinary soldiers are medieval level at best.

the wheel of time universe was developing hot air balloons, guns, and a crude steam engine in book 5 or 6(they kinda meld together).so there would be some level of mechanized response. The Romulan Republic wrote:I don't know much about 40K, but I understand that Star Wars is often considered to be on a level with them. Kind of off-topic, but if you mean "mechanized" as in tanks, then no. Keep in mind that the time since book six has apparently covered, what, a year in universe? In the most recent book they did what was probably their first ever test of a canon. They're putting them into mass production, but even then its only Andor and the Band that has them so far. Channellers are the only reason they could go toe to toe with 40K infantry.
