Watching episode 5. Episode 5 can be summed up as really bloody slow so far.
I'm kind of getting bored of this now. 5-6 episodes is enough to get this done, we don't need another 4-5 episodes of this.

I too am getting fed up of the total lack of actual Whoverse stuff beyond vague references. For one thing, where the hell is UNIT? Surely this kind of world-wide weird-shit investigation is their turf?
Now by all means have Jack and Gwen working with UNIT staff, but the closest we've come to talking about UNIT is vaguely referring to the UN sanctioning the "Three Categories" bullshit.
ARGH.
EDIT: Also, what's this about bigger on the inside? Did I miss something important because I was thinking that the blonde CIA girl is cute?

Where are the aliens? What we've seen so-far is evil conspiracy and evil corporation stuff conducted by humans (that triangle thingy is potentially alien, but we heard an human voice in S4).

If this turns out to be just some random power-play by Phicorp, I am going to be so mad.

"Bigger on the inside" is a feature of some types of Time Lord/Gallifreyan technology, such as the TARDIS used by the Doctor. (Supposedly, this also applies to the Doctor's pockets. Maybe the only explanation for how he can keep so much stuff in them)Eternal_Freedom wrote:EDIT: Also, what's this about bigger on the inside? How this may specifically apply to this series I don't know - I haven't been able to keep up with the episodes on this one.

Well I guess that warehouse with the sockpile of pills was bigger on the inside presumably because it was underground or partially sub-level.

Episode 3: 14:55
They walk into the warehouse then walk through into an even larger warehouse that stretches off into the distance
Jack: "Bigger on the inside than the outside"
Its either a poorly executed throwback to Doctor Who or the show somehow implimented this Doctor Who gimick without giving it the proper response it would merit.
Exposition about Torchwood, Jack or the alien invasions ?
Nope, they just blaze over that
Off the cuff references about being "bigger on the inside than the outside" coming from the character that is from Doctor Who ?
Thus your highlighting the fact Jack is from another series, has access to future knowledge, technology and is giant representation of the elephant in the room the series keeps avoiding. But only to the longterm watchers that know his history. Might as well be the writer saying 'Fuck You'

Yes, the TARDIS-esque warehouse will be a shit throw away injoke if it isn't further elaborated on, but in recent episodes of the main series there have been another species that form 4th dimensional interior spaces (the Silence).

I would've expected Gwen, at least to pick up on that one. She's heard Jack go on about the Doctor before. And yeah, UNIT should be on the case. Although UNIT has a history of bad behavior in Torchwood (Fragments, Children of Earth), which may make Jack and Gwen a little reluctant to contact them. Martha Jones? Only if they have her contact information. If she's actually detached from UNIT, they might not.

And it's kinda retarded that death legally doesn't exist when billions of people still aren't resistant to death the same way Jack is (who regenerated from total disintegration) and they're merely just much harder to kill (people can be essentially killed through immolation and that was demonstrated with those mooks in that crashed helicopter in the first episode). When that woman in hospital was found with strangle marks around her neck, instead of charging her abusive spouse with murder (which they couldn't legally do since the fatal stranglings couldn't kill the woman), why didn't they arrest her spouse for violent assault instead?

I seem to recall that they did charge him with assault. The Doctor was objecting that the charge wasn't severe enough, not that they'd let him off scott free.

There was a throw away line about African villagers getting horribly mutilated by soldiers from a rival tribe, who then buried their torn apart victims when half alive, entombed in utter, utter agony (like that conservative woman who got crushed in her car, ala Goldfinger).

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day thread
Ok, SoAfter watching these so far I have to say with each new episode I feel more and more... Emotional Detached...
Aside from the two main characters, I keep asking myself "Why am I supposed to care about these people?"
Why am I supposed to care about Rex's estranged Dad who we didn't know existed until two seconds ago? Or Esther's crazy sister?
Why the hell are they trying to make a Pedophiliac Murder into some sort of anti hero? Yes it is revealed he really doesn't care and isn't sorry (big shocker) But are we supposed to think society is so warped that he really is becoming a cultish Masonic leader that everyone is worshiping him?
This who story and premises is utterly going off the deep end and the one thing I come back to is telling myself "This CAN'T be the same universe as Dr Who.
It is the same thing as with "Children of Earth" which just goes back to poor written and stupid ideas. An Earth that has dealt with aliens invasions, monsters, creatures from beyond the abyss would have SOME experiences with such "weirdness"
Which goes back to this damned "PhiCorp" corporation. I mean so far, we are lead to believe that a cooperation engineered or knew that everyone would stop dying and then stockpile painkillers for making big profit. We have some hints at a "new world ordeR" but I have no idea how stopping death is going to get there. And now we have yet another shadowy conspiracy that is somehow both owner of a mega corporation and global conglomerate that is "Everywhere and nowhere" and the writers deiced to seemingly yank from their ass. It makes me REALLY hope they at least attempt to tie this into the Dr Who universe with some sort of established villains.
The nanogerms, the family of blood, the family Slitheen, ANYthing. Cause if at the end of this, it turns out to be some random alien or villain we have never heard of before, that has managed to create a world wide event like this, I just don't know.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day thread
Well the current series of Doctor Who features as its antagonist an alien species with access to TARDIS-like technology that could be described as being 'everywhere and nowhere' and with a history of manipulating the human race for their own ends. I suspect it's too much to ask that they are being very clever and are going to tie it all together somehow, but you never know...

I wouldn't say everybody likes Bill Pullman's character and there was fairly large crowd of hecklers throwing stuff at him before his second bullshit speech (I prefered his speech at the overspill hospital in Ep 4).Crossroads Inc. wrote: Why the hell are they trying to make a Pedophiliac Murder into some sort of anti hero? Maybe these human villains could be proxies to the Silence (since the Silence can longer be in direct contact with humans without being attacked, they are carrying out a plan through human henchmen?).
And who could top Peter Capaldi and the ambiguous, sympathetic villain he played? Conrad Ecklie is so hilariously moustache twirlingly unhinged in comparison.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day thread
Seriously the current series really suck. Children of the Earth was way better... we spend like 7 fucking seasons only to find out that Jack's old love interest is behind this shit? WTF? How the hell does some normal human from the 1930s come up with the resources for this?
On a side note, is anyone getting really tired with the fucking gay overtones in Torchwood? I seriously do not want to see two guys fucking each other. What's wrong with British in general? It's seems like every damn TV show they produce have gay overtones. Are their entire damn population gay?

Jack's character is gay, so, it is what it is. But the scenes definitely stop the show dead. I am reminded actually of the Star Trek Phase II episode where Spoiler
I was afraid they were going to duplicate this with Esther, who obvuiously has a thing for her coworker, who is focused on Dr. juarez.
Now Juarez is hot in an unusual way, and you kind of would ahve thought the guy would have noticed Esther long before he noticed juarez. Well here's my explanation. Esther IS hot. She's also a complete moron. She visits her sister, she starts breaking down during a mission, she went to the CIA Big Boss without connecting the dots that he was probably the one who deleted TW from the computers (Damn you Newman, I hope you get eaten by a dinosaur!)
I could probably string together a case for her getting Juarez killed, although I'd say that was more Juarez being cocky. Either way she's eye candy, but annoyingly incompetent.
The Silence MIGHT work for this series actually. Too good to be true but, they have the stereotypical alien look that maisntream viewers of this would expect. TW seems like it's targeted at Fox's old X files audience. They are trying for a modern hip 24/lost kind of audience. The Silence might work for that.
I did think him drunkenly calling Gwen after he got his knob polished, drunkenly telling her "We were the best right?" and her.. not even paying attention effecitvely portrayed the character dynamic at work. There are a lot of shows that can't handle that kind of thing, say what you will about Torchwood but they haven't thrown the towel in and written Jack and Gwen in Happy Ending.

Actually, as established in Jack's DW episodes, he isn't gay, he's omnisexual, along with everyone else in the 51st century. Now that's fine, but they only show him having interest in blokes (with the exception of Rose). That's fine, but it doesn't fit with what the character was originally.

Did you somehow miss Jack flirting with Martha Jones and that not-quite insectoid woman from the far future? Also, I had the distinct impression that if Gwen hadn't been engaged, and later married, he would have flirted with her. There's also the fact that he did get married and have kids at one point. This season seems to be emphasizing the interest in guys, but the interest in women did get play in previous seasons and on DW.

Yup... fuck this season.
Finally they seem to bring up references to the Doctor, Jack's backstory and they do it in an episode that is effectively shit. The world gets fucked up because Jack's gay boyfriend wants some lovin...
The gay aspect to Jack is getting way over blown. It was ok before when they did it with a bit of class but now the gratious gay sex scenes is just pointless. Then again, if it was a sex scene with Jack and Gwen I dont think folks would object so sexual preference bias comes into play. That said, gratious sex scenes dont make a story and this season has fuck all to show for one.

I appreciated the reference to the Trickster's Brigade. If they have the Trickster as the antagonist, explain it well for a new audience, and handle him in an adult manner, it might actually work. But they won't.
As for why Jack's effectively gay now; the actor is gay, not bisexual, and where he's the main character, he obviously has more creative control.

Given the name of the remaining episodes, I have the sinking feeling it might have to do something with Jack's "blood-letting" in this episode. Especially given how they reacted to his blood...

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day thread
All i can say about the newest episode is : this just makes me hate Gwen's character even more! her family is all ways how the enemy gets to Torchwood. it's cliche and annoying that she doesn't just choose one of the lives to live instead of trying to have both. Also i m disgusted about how quickly the decides to capture jack, sure they got her family; But the world is facing a Apocalypse with Jack at the center. Don't hate her but i get a little sick when shes on the screen.
