Egypt to withdraw Israel envoy over Sinai shootings

Post by Lord Zentei »

BBC wrote:Egypt says it will withdraw its ambassador to Israel in protest at the deaths of five policeman, reportedly shot by Israeli forces on Thursday.

Cairo said it held Israel politically and legally responsible, and demanded an investigation and an apology.

Israel has promised to investigate the deaths, amid claims that Israeli forces killed the officers while chasing suspected Palestinian militants.

It is the first time in a decade that Egypt has withdrawn its ambassador.

The BBC's Yolande Knell in Jerusalem says it marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Israel and Egypt.

The 30-year-old peace treaty was already being tested after the long-time Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak was forced from office earlier this year, our correspondent says.
'Erosion of order'

The latest violence began on Thursday when gunmen attacked buses near the Israeli Red Sea resort of Eilat, killing eight people.

Egyptian officials say Israeli forces chased the suspected militants across the border, and a number of people were killed - including the policemen.

Hundreds of Egyptians protested outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo overnight, burning the Israeli flag and demanding that the Israeli ambassador be expelled from the country. Protests were reportedly continuing on Saturday morning.

"We don't want any ties with Israel," one protester Ahmed Aggoura told the BBC.

"Israel is only interested in a subservient Egypt not a free Egypt. By protesting outside the embassy we're sending them a clear message. This is not Mubarak's Egypt any more. If you kill our soldiers, there will be consequences."

On Friday, in Egypt's second city, Alexandria, a protester managed to take down the Israeli flag from the consulate there and replaced it with Egyptian and Palestinian flags.

After the initial Eilat attack, Israel had expressed concern about security in the Sinai Peninsula and said Palestinian attackers had reached Eilat after entering Egypt from Gaza and travelling through the Sinai desert.

But the Egyptian cabinet issued a statement on Saturday denying it had lost control of the Sinai and demanding an apology from the Israeli leadership over "the sad and hasty remarks about Egypt".

"The Egyptian ambassador to Israel will be withdrawn until we are notified about the results of an investigation by the Israeli authorities," said the statement.

Cairo said it regarded the attack as a breach of the 1979 peace treaty between the two nations, and blamed Israel for lax border controls.

Under Mr Mubarak ties between the two nations had been stable after a history of conflict.

But Mr Mubarak's ousting in a popular uprising has sparked fears among Israeli officials that a less amenable government could take charge in Cairo.

And correspondents say the Sinai desert region of Egypt has become increasingly lawless since Mr Mubarak was ousted, with a rise in al-Qaeda-inspired militant activity.

Speaking to the BBC's Today programme on Friday, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev warned there had been an "erosion of law and order in some parts of Sinai in the last few weeks".

But he added: "Israel and Egypt have a common interest in the border remaining quiet and not allowing extremist elements to establish a platform in Sinai.

"I understand that the Egyptians have no interest whatsoever in once again extremist elements escalating violence along the border."

Since Thursday's attacks, Israeli aircraft have repeatedly attacked targets in the Gaza Strip, while Palestinian militants have fired more than 20 rockets into Israel.
Netanyahu had better learn some diplomacy skills after this. I'm not betting on him succeeding in doing so.

Egypt claiming to no longer control the Sinai - it remains to be seen how committed they are in cracking down on these guys.

The Egyptian response is actually rather moderate and seems to be more for internal consumption (We're Doing Something):

1) In the end the ambassador wasn't recalled.
2) They required an Israeli investigation, not an international one.

Bear in mind that the circumstances of the deaths are as yet unclear - it's not known whether they were killed by IDF fire or by the terrorists (one version of events has them being killed by explosives set up by the terrorists). Also bear in mind that the entire incident started with fire into Israel from Egypt, and that reportedly at least one terrorist set up a sniper nest on the Egyptian side near an Egyptian outpost (don't know if the dead policemen were stationed in that specific outpost, though). It's also not clear whether IDF troops did in fact cross the border or only fire across it.

Israel has already issued a statement of regret for the deaths and has announced a joint investigation with the Egyptians (note that the article's first paragraph is misleading - Israel did not admit the deaths were caused by Israeli fire; for that matter, the Egyptian statement does not actually state the deaths were caused by IDF fire).

Egypt claiming to no longer control the Sinai - it remains to be seen how committed they are in cracking down on these guys.

Egypt's ambassador to Israel will remain in the country, Foreign Ministry officials said Saturday evening, as the diplomatic crisis vis-à-vis Cairo in the wake of Thursday's terror attacks appeared to be waning.

Earlier Saturday it was reported that Egypt has recalled the envoy to express its displeasure with the killing of five Egyptian police officers during the terror offensive in southern Israel.

However, Israeli officials said that Egypt had no intention to recall the ambassador to begin with. The move was merely considered by Cairo and was apparently misinterpreted by the media, the sources said.

Top Israeli officials treated the brewing crisis with the utmost seriousness, convening meetings to discuss Jerusalem's response to the growing tensions. After hours of debates at the highest levels of government, officials decided to offer an apology to Cairo over the Egyptian deaths.

The apology was conveyed in the form of an "expression of regret" issued by Defense Minister Ehud Barak Saturday afternoon.

Israel's statement was conveyed to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry by Shalom Cohen, Israel's former ambassador to Egypt. Cohen arrived in Cairo to replace current envoy, Yitzhak Lebanon, who is currently vacationing in the United States.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry accepted the apology, prompting diplomatic sources in Israel to tell Ynet that "it appears the crisis is behind us."

Yes, that part was my bad. It was late and I wasn't coherent when I typed that. Obviously I meant that Israel had claimed that.
