Actually- fuck that- after reading some of the complaints on the main board I don't think I will be buying it.Vympel wrote:Moo3 still hasn't come out in Australia. I'm going to get it. I've heard what I like to hear- and I'm also sick to death of Moo2- it's boring and quaint. It used to be fun, but really, I'm tired of it. Especially the sad ass combat system.
I'm going to buy Moo3, and I'm going to like it.
RUNS BACK TO CODDLE MOO2 *I'm sorry I said that about you MOO2!*
I will, however, buy Freelancer. I've played the demo and it rules. At least I know what the hell I'm buying.Oh, and Freelancer comes out tommorow in the US and next week here. I will also buy that.
Frankly, I'm really pissed off. I've waited years for this goddamn game and I can already smell the hyenas about to tear it to pieces. I've seen it before- Pools of Radiance 2, anyone?

This was the post that did it for me, in a long thread about why MOO3 just wasn't any fun:
"The constant refrain from the fanbois and PTB during the game's formative years was that these races were cheesy. And cool weapons systems like assault shuttles? They were cheesy too. And space monsters - guess what - more fromage. Being able to fly to any system within range? Fondue. Mind control? Parmesan. And so on.
You see, this game was created by people who hated MOO2. Alan Emrich (ex designer), for example, got the job because he wrote a detailed strategy guide on MOO1. He was a numbers fan and did a good job of documenting all the nuts and bolts of that game - all the formulae and equations. But I don't think he would know fun if it bit him in the leg. He got off on pseudo-realistic chrome and that's why you now have etherians rather than darlocks - they are more realistic, apparently (?). And that's why the standard human looks like a commissar. And the elerians - they're right out. No sex please, we're being serious here.
So, if you're looking for fun, you're in the wrong place - it was deliberately designed out by puritans who know that having fun is sinful. MOO2 was a bad game and they've improved upon it by removing all the wicked cheese that it contained. Instead, you can have all the numbers you can eat and then some. Just remember that you can look but you can't touch. That might be fun ..."
Really made me remember why I liked MOO2 so much back in the day. I haven't played it in a while- sometime last year would probably be my last time. It's a bit too depressing.
And this:
The proponents of the game say "just take a step back and let the AI handle it - you're too much of a micromanager". If that's true then what the heck am I left with?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You get to:
* Move Ships
* Control Major Issues w/Sliders and Tables
* Do Diplomacy
* Handle Personnel
* Hit NEXT TURN
These 5 items are the core of a Macromanager's game. I just don't see why you can't find the beauty in this. I mean, they've freed you from all the other junk so that you can concentrate on your strategy. This is a strategy game.
Why get bogged down in tactics? Frankly, I think they should take away exploration decisions and ship movement. Too much of a micro issue really. I should just tell my guys to explore or to attack someone."
The one big underlying theme of every complain tho, is:
"I'm sick of trying to enjoy this game. It's no fun, I'm not fooling myself anymore"
The only reason they've slogged through the game at all? Because it's got MOO on the box.

Sudden power is apt to be insolent, sudden liberty saucy; that behaves best which has grown gradually.

Just how hardware-hungry is MoO3?
Does it use some funky new 3D graphics? Or will it run with some older graphic cards?

my gateway has an Nvidia riva TNT2 with 32mb of video ram...128 mb of PC133 and a 700 Mhz Athlon and it runs 'good'. funny thing, i installed it on my roomate's HP which has the same ram, and is 33 mhz faster, but has 16 mb less video ram ...gameplay was fine, but the opening sequence ran like shit.Dahak wrote:Just how hardware-hungry is MoO3?

MOO2's battle sequences were much much better than MOO3's....Sokar wrote: Shep, keep playing a bit more , the interface gets easier, just has a massivily steep learning curve.
I'll go get some screen caps.....

i like the fact that now the environmental needs of the races are diferent. in moo3 takes things like a planets distance from the sun into account. also diferent environments favor diferent races. i like that attention to detail.

ACK....thats the one thing I HATED about MoO2 was the combat system, anything over 20 ships and it got so tedious. MoO3 is definatly NOt an everymans game, leave that to Red Alert 2 or WC3. If you like detailed Empire building then MoO3 is for you, if you want fast and frivolous, look else where.MKSheppard wrote:MOO2's battle sequences were much much better than MOO3's....Sokar wrote: Shep, keep playing a bit more , the interface gets easier, just has a massivily steep learning curve.
