Personally, I'm tired of people thinking that a polite liar is somehow more acceptable than an honest asshole. That acceptance has to do with the "style over substance" fallacy that Mr. Wong talks about on his site. Some people prefer polite lies over truths apparently.

Personally, I insult in response to insult. For me, insults (when intentionally made) are viewed simultaneously as psychological attacks and moves in a very entertaining game between personalities.
My favorite form of insult is to either (lately, thanks to you lot here at SDN) point out the glaring flaws in the reasoning of their insult to them for the benefit of our mutual audience (to which they will occasionally respond, "Are you tryin' ta make me look stupid?" "Nature did that. I'm just giving you a spotlight.") instructing them to do something harmful to themselves ("Tell you what, maybe you're right. But the only way we'll really know is if you insert a cattle prod directly into your anus and go ride a horse. Let me know how that turns out.") or the surprise attack. ("Really? Well that's interesting because WHO GIVES A FUCK!") The last being, of course, for when the individual in question is usually so boring that I don't feel like wasting effort on them.
