I personally like my skin more during the summer when it gets darker.. But I wouldn't go out and tan just to tan much.. maybe once or twice.. but even then, not a full-body one (or even intentionally) until my body is better looking..

If you observe certain rules, there's nothing unhealthy about tanning. As long as you don't turn it into a self-BBQ.

But I don't like it. I get a terrible migraine if I stay too long in the hot summer sun, and secondly I get freckles in my face. A shitload of them. Just by tanning for a few minutes. And I hate myself with freckles

I could never understand why people would risk skin cancer just for having darker skin...

This isn't new. In colonial days, it was "fashionable" to have skin as light as possible.

One--the blatant racism against blacks and American Indians.
Two--darker skin (on a white person) meant you spen a lot of time outside which usually meant "working class" in the fields and the wealthier people stayed indoors a lot.

As a result, people would actually take arsnic and wash with lead lined soap (when they did bathe) to make their skin paler.

In the days of corsettes, it was not unheard of for women to have a couple ribs surgically removed. Think of how risky surgery was back then.

Stupidity in the name of fashion is nothing new.

BTW, I thought I might mention something... I heard that Australia was testing a means of stimulating melanin production in the skin with either a pill or an injection (both were being tested)... I wonder if they've made any progress.

in any event, barring such a convenient means of tanning without UV exposure, the best way to get melanin is into your offspring... choose mates wha are much darker than you are!

heh... sooner or later everybody's gonna have skin like me anyway (think Tiger Woods' shade of brown) to some extent or another, so why fight it?

I like how I look with a tan but to deliberatly tan one self is stupid. Abusing the body when its young so it looks pretty only makes old that much more torturous for those individuals (if they live to point which their skin becomes leathery, develops discoloration, and wrinkles prematurely due to years of sundamage).

The only tanning that I believe in is due to hard labor out in the sun where sunscreen stops working after the first few hours of sweet.

I get tanned in the summer from being outside all the time, it just kinda happens after a while. I won't go lie on a beach just to get tanned, I get tanned from being outside biking, rollerblading, running, playing soccer, and all those other fun sports. It's just a by-product of my lifestyle. I should note that the only way for me to get sunburned is to fall asleep on a sunny porch for an entire afternoon in the middle of summer, and even then all I got was a bit of reddishness on my shoulders.
