When you think Trek "jumped the shark?"
For me it was when "First Contact" came out. This was the downfall of the Borg and they were my favorite villain. Of course, then there was Voyager...

I thought that ST jumped the shark much earlier, during the TNG years??

Actually, it declined somewhat from TNG but it certainly was still a great show and still had a great episodes.Simon H.Johansen wrote:I thought that ST jumped the shark much earlier, dyring the TNG years??
But Voyager was an unredeemed peice of shit! Once B&B got complete control (something they really didn't have on DS9) that's what killed Trek, combined with Generations and the mediocre to shitty TNG movies.

Best of Both Worlds heralded the end of decent Trek. Although some of DS9 was entertaining at times I think the Dominion War could have been done better, AR-588 made me wretch and only one main character dying was pretty blah

The beginning of year 7 in TNG. Though DS9 had its good points.

The awful plague that was Voyager. In defense of TNG, whenever people think of bad trek the usual first example they use is from Voyager. Voyager had the it all, bad characters, bad subplots, AWFUL science, technobabble to teh nth degree...the FUCKING RESET button, TNG was still decent, even some of the weaker episodes were better than many of Voyager's best.
Voyager deprived Trek of power and now when Enterprise swings around it will deprive Trek of its life.

I remember sitting down to watch Voyager with a friend who was a fanatic Treker. He even wore his uniform to watch the show in. The episode was Threshold. Until that point I still hadn't given up on Voyager, after all Star Trek usually seems to need a season to find its feet. However the moment Janeway had Paris' salamander babies, I gave up on Trek. I haven't intentionally watched a full episode since then. As a side note my friend sold all his Trek related stuff that same year.
For me Threshold was the moment I recognized that Trek had jumped the shark, but Parallax was probably when it did so.

Hmm....
I'd have to say Voyager. The thing is, DS9 was still going good when Voyager came out....so maybe once DS9 ended and Voyager was the last vestage of ST left?

I liked the later episodes of Deep Space 9.
But I think Generations was it. Contrived plot, rampant, glaring plot-holes, insanely weak death for Kirk, failure of Kirk's death to satisfy his prediction in Star Trek V, no character growth, run-of-the-mill psycho for a villain, et cetera. It was a gigantic step down from Star Trek VI.

I don't think there is a definite POINT where you can truly say that Trek lost its magic. Voyager was certainly a large leap in that direction, but TNG started the downward spiral. As a whole, TNG was a success in spite of the over-use of technobabble and some how, the treknobabble turned into a brain bug. I would think the writers are smart enough to realize that the treknobabble was not the cause of TNG's success.

Well, Kirk's prediction may have yet to come to pass, as far as I'm concerned he never died in Generations.Durandal wrote:I liked the later episodes of Deep Space 9.
