Nope. Nope. Pablo got it wrong.

Eh, we can wait for Vympel to come on later tonight. He has a massive
mega multi meg dossier on every piece of soviet hardware ever made,
that is only viewable to HAB denizens...

He'll be able to explain it in much better detail than I would ever be
able to
The Heavy Armor Brigage has dossiers on Soviet stuff? I LOVE Soviet weapons, I don't kmow why, but I virtually jack off to AKs.Gee, how do you join the HAB?

Not really. Although I think it was designed with the possibility of doing so.
but as Russia has HUGE ammo dumps of 7.62mm, they simply keep using the older AKs for their conscripts and the newer rifles for spec-ops.
Virtually all servicemen in the Russian army use the AK-74 with its 5.45 round, but the Soviet doctrine on obsolescent weapons still holds true:quote]

Yeah, and some elite units use the AN-94. I've heard from one Russian that some soldiers in Chechenya actually prefer to use the AKM instead of AK-74.

*strides into thread*

anyone with any request on even the most anal retentive piece of post-WW2 Soviet equipment, come to me :)
Never, ever throw ANYTHING away! No, not even that T-54. You may need it later!

LOL. A litle perspective: The JS-2 was official retired from service in 1995. Yes, that's right, 51 years of service in the Red Army.
Indeed, the latest generation of Russian assault rifles such as the AN-94 were built to use 5.56mm NATO rounds I believe
The AN-94 uses 5.45x39mm, and some new 5.45x39mm rounds have been developed- the Russians have made big advances in armor piercing and they make some sweet 9x39mm rounds for their silenced assault and sniper rifles (the AS Val and the VSS Vintorez).

However, if we're talking about new rounds, they've developed an intermediate 6x49mm cartridge. This may be the 'new wave'.

Or they may just stick to good ol 5.45x39mm, though in urban combat it has a tendency to richochet. That's why a few Russian soldiers in Chechnya were seen toting AKMs.

It's funny actually, the "don't throw anything away policy" means you have a one-stop shop for every possible contingency- hence D-44 85mm field guns developed in 1944 were wheeled out and used in Chechnya:

Why? You don't need huge 152mm field guns like the Giatsint-B or MSTA-B for most situations, you need light guns you can move around and get a rapid rate of fire going with.

OK, I'm in. And ready to deal out 4 barreled 12.7mm death to all mecha fanboys. That is, if the 57mm rockets and SWATTERs don't get em first.

BTW, how do you like my new Sig?

Judging by your Mi-24P HIND-F sig, that would be 30mm death, 81mm rockets and SPIRALs. :)

One of the few Russian HIND pics on the net I haven't seen :)

I said SIG! Not AVATAR! My Avatar is an Apocalypse tank, and I like those also.

FUCK, I can't believe I missed the gun type. Ah, well, the bigger the better.
If only there were some way to mount a 50mm gun on my HIND...
