No, I'm quite certain you've said everything that needs to be said, *I'm a smarmy asshole*? The US can't act benevolently until someone else changes it.
Growing up has nothing to do with it. I've known Uncle Sam is pretty much evil for quite some time, I merely thought the CIA was a reactionary, powerful force that held back America's government from changing by getting the support of the corrupt elements of the government that hold it (USA) back.
