Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
I always thought that creating a huge sandbox space gives lots of options to release new content. Rockstar did this with GTA IV, producing Lost and Damned and Ballad of Gay Tony. LaD was alright, BoGT wasn't, but that is not the point. That was new content already and the plot intertwined with the original GTA IV in some interesting ways.
Enter Capcom. What the fuck? They released Dead Rising 2 Off the Record. Which is THE SAME FUCKING GAME as DR2. Short of replacing Chuck with Frank and some minor plot tweaks. Like the fact that there is no Katey, but it makes fuckall difference since Frank is infected and has to take his Zombrex every 24 hours. Check the bloody gamefaqs walkthroughs, the differences are minimal.
I mean, what the fuck Capcom? Not enough revenue from the original? If I would buy the original DR2 and then buy THE SAME FUCKING GAME AGAIN but renamed DR2:OTR, then I would be pissed off, because I would pay for the same thing TWICE.
Fuck you Capcom. Fuck you.

Pretty sure they're targeting fans of DR1 who wanted to play as Frank.
Here's an idea: Don't buy the game if you're so full of righteous indignation about its existence.

Are there new weapons and other usual insanity at least? Otherwise, yeah, I kind of expected something like that: an obvious cash-in.

I got a better idea. Start reading instead of reflex posting. I NEVER said I bought the game and as a matter of fact, I am glad I read the reviews online and did some research before rushing to the store because "OMFG new dead rising game!" My less fortunate friend showed it to me, although he never played DR2 so he doesn't feel as cheated.DPDarkPrimus wrote:Here's an idea: Don't buy the game if you're so full of righteous indignation about its existence.
Yes they are, but they are doing it in a way that paints them as money greedy corporate fuckers they are. They could have introduced a new storyline to make things interesting. As far as I have seen, the journalism spin of the plot is pretty good. Too bad it is entirely spoiled by the fact that this is the same game as DR2.Pretty sure they're targeting fans of DR1 who wanted to play as Frank.
If Rockstar would release GTA IV: Ballad of Carl Johnson or whatever but just replaced Niko with Carl then it would be as lame as DR2:OTR.
Im usually cool with DLC's, remakes and such. But this is such a blatant attempt at making some additional cash without actually investing into creation of a new content that I just feel offended.
Besides, how much of a nerd you would have to be to buy DR2 again just to play the same game with a different character? That's way past me, way past Stark too, probably.
Re: Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
Since all the Dead Rising games are horrible and barely 'sandbox', who even cares? The game is barely selling in Australia, and DR2 didn't do very well either, because it was awful.

*Looks at the different Street Fighter IV iterations along with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3*
I'm pretty sure that they were very up-front about this being a de facto rerelease, although at least they have a precedent of dropping the price from US$60 to US$40 for "tweaked rereleases"... unlike Activision and you-know-what.
(One nice thing about Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition was it being available as either a standalone disc or as DLC for Super Street Fighter IV.)

Re: Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
Dead Rising 2 is one of those games I actually regret buying. Bills itself as a sandbox zombie killfest when it's really just a looooooooong series of leading hapless fucking AIs with shitty pathing or hunting down valtrexzombrex for his annoying as fuck kid. All I wanted to do was run over zombies with a lawnmower, but nooooo...

Re: Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
I just borrowed DR2 from my brother and I just can't get more then 5% into the game because its so stupid, gameplay that is. The concept is awesome but its so freaking broken. How many times do I have to replay the same run to the pharmacy to get the single dose of Zombrex?

As many times as it takes you to give up and play better zombie games (even if Dead Island is more 'Diablo zombies' than '8-bit puzzle zombies'.
At least you can just run them down or get your coop partners to explode them or whatever.

Re: Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
I can't remember saying that about Dead Island and I haven't posted in that thread. I played the game, it is certainly much less linear than DR2 which just makes you fulfill some sick schedule: 1 pm - go rescue survivors 2 pm - go find Zombrex. I had to skip on some boss fights (like the rednecks) because [Denzel Washington] I just didn't have the time [/Denzel Washington]Stark wrote:Since all the Dead Rising games are horrible and barely 'sandbox', who even cares? DR2's problem is that it gets boring so damn fast. It's not a sandbox game, it's a bloody wall-mart evasion simulator.
After playing DR2 the only thing that improved in me was the ability to buy groceries faster.
I agree in DI being a much better game. The zombie classes are much more interesting and you usually have to put up a fight (if you stumble across a group of Infected then there is no sense in running). The weapons is better, the gore is better...
Re: Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
Oh, ok then. So you believe that I shouldn't criticize the game and it's developers? The "don't like it don't buy it" approach? If you really subscribe to that way of thinking then I'll be more than happy to chime in next time you criticize or vent about something.DPDarkPrimus wrote:Take your own advice. Sorry. I just dimly remembered someone saying it, and you're one of the only other people on SDN with original opinions so I assumed it was you.Tolya wrote:I can't remember saying that about Dead Island and I haven't posted in that thread.
I even think the weapon customisation stuff is better; the way it worked in DR2 was dumb, and they broke too fast. DI makes it a moneysink, but nobody I know ever ran out of money for that stuff, and the Diablo-ness wasn't high enough to make weapons useless in less than 10-15 levels. The ambient weapons like pipes, oars etc never levelling was a shame, though - but ironically it just made them like ambient weapons in DR, ie low damage, break in 5 hits.I agree in DI being a much better game. What is the draw of DR supposed to be? I hear people talk about how it lets you do CRAZEEE shit, so I guess people like the no-threat zombies and lego lightsabres and stuff. Dead Island, by constrast, can be quite harrowing and stressful.

Re: Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
Dead Rising 1 had a sandbox mode (Life deteriorated at a fixed rate, and health items didn't respawn, but it lasted as long as you could. There was even an achievement for survivng a goddamned long time...) but the game's ranged combat controls were broken as fuck... and one of the first bosses requires you to shoot a guy in the rafters a few dozen times...
Dead Rising 2 had FPS gun controls, but stripped out both of the longer time-frame modes.
Capcom, sensing that people might, you know, want features they stripped out, releases DR:OTR. Which apparently has sandbox unlocked from the get go.
They aren't very good games though. Running zombies over with a lawn-mower or wading through them with chainsaws strapped to an oar is fun... but not enough to give the game much replayability. Might pick up the PC version if/when it hits less than $10 on a Steam sale... Assuming it isn't a shitport.

When I criticize a game, I usually have played it. If I criticize a game that I haven't played, then I make a point of mentioning that I haven't played it, and the reasons I'm criticizing it over are usually the reasons why. But then that's that.Tolya wrote:Oh, ok then. So you believe that I shouldn't criticize the game and it's developers? The "don't like it don't buy it" approach? If you played it, then maybe you could do a more detailed analysis about how little is changed. But you aren't going to (which is fine) so there isn't anything more to really say about the matter, is there? If there was a controversy over the points you were criticizing, then maybe we'd have a real discussion going, but as is you're just getting mad at me because I made a slightly flippant remark.

Re: Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
Dead Island is better than Dead Rising because Dead Island doesn't throw a Game Over screen in your face or force a shit ending on you if you:
-don't keep a tight schedule (because being punctual is more important than living another day)
-don't get the item/boss fight/whatever before the deadline happens
-take your time getting to and doing the main quests
-screw around and teabag zombies for six hours
-don't know the game by heart, thus requiring much trial, error, blood and tears figuring out what to do and when to do it - or memorizing walkthroughs at GameFAQS
-make even a single mistake
Dead Island railroads you in terms of plot, but you can get off the train at almost any time and smell weed the roses. Dead Rsiing, on the other hand, is like saving up for a brand new car and loaning it to a drunk driver.

You haven't answered the point I made about you at all. Instead, you are complaining about the fact that I haven't played the game (although I've seen the gameplay footage and seen someone else play the game in my presence, which in this case is entirely enough) and cannot provide a "detailed analysis" of the differences. Well, newsflash: I don't care for the game, I'm more interested in corporate marketing practices of Capcom.DPDarkPrimus wrote:When I criticize a game, I usually have played it. Dude, afais, 95 percent of the bloody cutscene animations and dialogues are recycled (save for the main character obviously), what does it say about a developer?
And I'm not mad at you, I'm just trying to understand your point of view, which in this case seems to be "you don't have to buy this game if you don't like it". Which sounds like something a redneck hillbilly would say "if you don't like our country then you can just gitout!".
Re: Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
Well, considering you can just download a savegame or a trainer from the net which unlocks the said sandbox mode, pricing 39,90 for a bunch of features most people don't really care about (we all know how sandbox mode sucks even more than the normal plot mode) seems a bit... strange.Andrew_Fireborn wrote:Capcom, sensing that people might, you know, want features they stripped out, releases DR:OTR. You know what DR2:OTR really is? It's a mod. Not even a total conversion mod. It's like those mods that let you swap the skin&model of the main character, only they made certain tweaks in the cutscenes. Last I've seen, you can download most mods for the games for free from the internet.
I've seen the PC port version and it's pretty well done. To be entirely honest, the little tweaks to the gameplay made the game slightly better. Plus, Frank is a lot more interesting than Chuck. If they released it for like 5 bucks as a DLC then it would've made sense. But charging a full price for it is just something that shouldn't be done. They aren't very good games though. Actually, if someone never played DR2 and would like to, skipping to DR2:OTR seems like a good idea. The game still sucks, but a little bit less than the original.
Re: Dead Rising 2: Off the Recycler
It's especially absurd considering how much publishers want their consumers to pre-order and buy their products at launch. The sales that take place in the first couple of months are the ones they care most about, so why are they then punishing the consumers they should appreciate most by forcing them to buy a game they already own if they want to access the tiny shred of content they added? Other publishers do that with their GOTY editions, but at least their content was previously released as DLC. Honestly, the only people who handle this shit well are Rockstar. Whether you like or hate their games, the DLC they have released for them has been very substantive, and they've released retail discs with the content on them that can be bought separately.Tolya wrote:I've seen the PC port version and it's pretty well done.
