Fleet strength for the USN
Anyone know where I can find this? I Googled it but all I got was either antiqued information, essays, or budgets, not actual numbers.

eh, it's good, but it doesn't have a complete breakdown- just lists total ship strength and submarines. I'm looking more for X number of carriers, X number of destroyers, etc.

The US has not concealed its actual number and types of vessels since 1945, when losses where generally concealed until they could be announced alongside a victory.el blanco wrote:That would probably be classified, the way the navy guards things about the nuclear carriers and Los Angeles class subs. There used to be a site where you could actually track the movements of the carrier groups, but the gubbment shut it down.
The only thing that's kept secret is some internal aspects of warships. For example civilian cameras have never seen the engine room of a 688.

Every sub built within the last 30 years or so actually. Its only in the last decade or so that anything internal been seen. Go back to the cold war, and you couldn't find a photo of a USN sub in dry dock. Even today there not that common and generally don't show the propellers.theski wrote:Or a Seawolf I believe...

I'd try www.fas.org, if you couldn't look anywhere else.

FAS sucks shit, especially for this, since it hasn't had an update to its conventional military sections since 2000.Lonestar wrote:I'd try www.fas.org, if you couldn't look anywhere else.

With less then half the airgroup of USN vessels, 18 Flankers vs. 50 Hornets and Tomcats, along with four E-2s and a varying number of EA-6 prowlers and S-3 Vikings. Though USN carriers can for the most part support up to 75 fixed wing aircraft plus as many helicopters as the Kuznetsov.HemlockGrey wrote:Hah! Bwahahaha!
22 sounds more like the total number of active Russian surface combatants.

All Hands Magazine puts out a year in review issue annually. They contain listings of all U.S. ships, air squadrons, weapons systems, and all sorts of useful info. I'm in the process of tracking down an online version for you.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.
