This is pre-WWII. You can sort of tell from the sketch style, from thee way it refers to Japan (Japan in the 1950s was still rebuilding from WWII), the spelling of Tokyo, lots of details. Nothing obvious... except that the upper right hand corner of the page reads "November 1931." --- Simon_Jester

Amongst others, yes. By the time they got to the Outbreak reference, I was laughing from all the things I recognised.

The fact that the Ponyville residents have hazard-suits on-hand in their homes may have unintended and disturbing implications.

This episode did teach us that Equestria has had plague at some point in it's history.

What is with this season not having any musical numbers?

I enjoyed it, but I have to say this is the weakest episode of the series so far.

Still a complete lack of the Apple family parents - they really need an episode to explain that. Big Macintosh still not getting any lines annoys me (though he's apparently a chiropractor as well as a farmer).

So the 'disease' (more likely caused by water contamination or something, given this episode) is last recorded as being in the 'palaeopony' ('old pony'?) era... clearly a reference to the RL palaeolithic, which implies that the ponies have records stretching back millions of years. Given that they have at least two immortals (the princesses), that's not wholly impossible - that book could be describing something that Celestia dictated to an interested historian pony. Of course, that assumes that the 'palaeopony' era is really really long ago.

It was interesting to see that Twilight is apparently empowered to get anypony to write a friendship letter to Celestia.

Also, I now want a Zecora episode. And a Spike episode (thought we're getting one of those soon enough...). But mostly an Applejack episode, come on animators!
So today's episode had a reference to...
The whole plot of this episode was obviously inspired by The Red Shoes.
And also one of the ingredients to making a pony is cocaine. -Darth Fanboy.

Well, after the "atomic rainboom" Rainbow Dash performed in S2E3 "Lesson Zero", maybe some ponies decided it would be prudent to stash some in case of another incident ? Evilsoup, take note : ponies are NBC-Ready.

Also : I like the "atomic clover" cutie mark on the suits. You just know it will be referenced one way or another in FO:E...

Lets see... they life near the Everfree Forest where we know of at least one plant (poison joke) that can cause bizzare transformations on ponies who come int contact with it.

Then there was Discords attack which covered the place in chocolate milk and who knows what else. Might not be dangerous per se but some cautious ponies might not want to take chances with whatever leftover spoiled milk was left over, or any bugs that might be attracted to the smell or whatnot.

And Rainbow dash keeps pulling off Sonic Rainbooms left and right... I can imagine some mare wondering if the sonic rainboom is radioactive and decides to grab some hazmat suits just in case.

Then Twilight cast her "want it, need it" spell in Lesson Zero. I don't know if those hazmat suits would protect against spells like that but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Hmm... then there was the parasprite invasion where the parasprites started eating ponies houses and clothes (though only after Twilight cast a spell to keep them from eating the food). I can't pretend to think of how much protection those suits would provide against parasprites (who were shown eating whole wooden barrels and metal lamp posts, but they could offer some protection against lesser insect swarms.

Oh, and that dragon started covering the land in smoke that one time. They could have gotten the suits or at least some kind of breath protection to deal with the soot and smoke.

I don't know if there is anything I've missed but its pretty clear that Ponyville has seen some pretty crazy stuff happening in the last year or so alone and some ponies are at least trying to protect themselves. And that's just in Ponyville, given Equestrias crazy tech level and the various dangers and magical phenomenon we've seen, hazmat suits don't surprise me at all.

Hmm... earth ponies must have it rough when dealing with germs. I mean their primary means of manipulating objects are therir forehooves, mouth, and occasionally the tail. They eat with their mouths, walk with their hooves, and the tail has all sorts of issues with it.
Fry: No! They did it! They blew it up! And then the apes blew up their society too. How could this happen? And then the birds took over and ruined their society. And then the cows. And then... I don't know, is that a slug, maybe? Noooo!

Hmm. Alright episode. But the 'everything ends up fine and dandy' seems a little stretched in this episode. Steal and lie to everyone? That's all fine, because... ? Just because apparently.

I mean I know its a kid's show and that its thing. But at least Celestia sounded slightly peeved with Twilight fucked up. AB doesn't even get that.

Considering how the CMC remain unphased by all this, I wonder why the grown ups aren't at least trying to make a bigger impression on them.

Doesn't that make them more combat-ready than most sci-fi armies? I'm sure I'll find a way to work that in there eventually.

Is Fallout: Equestria worth reading? I've heard good things about it, but I find the underlying premise both infinitely ridiculous and endlessly depressing, so it'd need to be really really good for me to give it a go ... so, is it?

EDIT: Crazedwraith, I totally agree with you. If nothing else, they should have emphasised that chowing down on random medicine isn't a good idea. I don't have a problem with Apple Bloom 'lying' (because she wasn't really lying, she probably genuinely thought that the freaky potion just revealed her special talent), but stealing from Zecora? She should at least have got told off.

ALSO I predict that this episode will launch an Apple Bloom/Snails ship and oh god I can't believe I just wrote that.

For me it was really rather good after the first one or 2 chapters, them just being ok.

I can't tell, as I haven't got past the fourth chapter or so so far. But yeah, it has the same tone than Fallout : Depressing/Grimdark with some Silliness in it.
The whole story is written at the first person. In the first chapter you can experience "firsthand" how depressing it would be to live your whole life in a vault with no chance of escape. In the second, the narrator is captured by raiders, with another wastelander, but manage to escape ; only to then be betrayed by the wastelander she helped. In the third, the narrator find a raider's-pit-o'-villainy, freak-out and goes on a rampage (warning : "graphic" violence).

I found it good so far, but, as I have the ability to enjoy shitty stories, at your place I wouldn't trust my words.
Just read the first and second chapter to see by yourself, I'd say.

You guys, this thread is starting to get creepy..

Now I know I got ponies banned from testing the last time, but I don't know, maybe Thanas will be in a better mood. Why don't you try to post an image thread over there (in the pit, where it belongs)?

Rabid: eh, I might give it a go ... but I actually have very little tolerance for grimdark in MLP (yes, I know, the hypocrisy of me writing a 40K crossover..). I'll probably try it some time, I guess.

You know, this is the exact reason that all the humanisation pictures on Ponibooru have Twilight being Asian.

Actually, I recall something about Lauren Faust making her own humanization and in it, Twilight was black.
I can't find it though.

Still, on humanized ponies, this is my favourite (one of them anyway):

I think that their ethnicity/race/whateve still manages to complement who they are rather than try to define them.
