Greeks two political parties have decided to form a Government of national unity, will have two priorities: a) executing the EU's decisions b) preparing for national elections. Papandreou will step down.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

Because you are an incorrigable pessimist?

Nah, in this case it's probably true. Greece is in for a bad decade.

It seems, though, that Italy is the next powderkeg even if Greece has been "somewhat" extinguished (by politicking in the upper echelons of power, which never breeds well with the people).

In reaction to Greece raising a fuss with a referendum on a EU/Euro exit, the latest PM (Lucas Papademos) has been appointed and he was a veteran of the European Central Bank, a vice president no less. I didn't think things would get that blatant.

It's been that blatant for a while now, what with Sarko & Merkel demanding the Greek political leaders to sign an agreement that they'd implement the reforms.

I agree that it's undemocratic, but let's be fair. Their demand is that they sign an agreement, if they want to receive money from the French and German governments. There is an important difference there. It's also worth noting that they were going to appoint the speaker of the Greek parliament instead but that was politically unviable because the Greek parties couldn't agree on him.

To my knowledge, they approached Papademos first, some four days ago - but there were problems on agreeing on him right away due to his demands.

Over in Italy we thankfully see the back of Silvio Berlusconi, but then we get the disarmingly bland Mario Monti as his replacement, an ex-EU commissioner who was also an advisor to Goldman-Sachs. I can see a pattern emerging.
