Jeez are you new to this?

We've been having literally the same problem with Macross internationally for almost 20 years.

Oh and Manus, that's Alto Saotome, COMBAT GOTHIC LOLITA :3

Get it right.

So, I'm just watching the first movie right now. And I have a few observations.

Sheryl is a lipsyncher. Forget that concert, she doesn't even need to be there. I'll catch the holograms, thankyouverymuch. Also, what's with that first song being entirely about clockwork S&M?

Commander Ozuma is a douchebag. He calls the NUNS Squadron 'cowards'. The same squadron that took like 80+ percent casualties by leading the vanguard against an unknown enemy of massive power while flying shitty planes that aren't properly equipped, while he rolls in there with pimped out doom-mobiles to snag enemy fighters that were busy shooting someone at someone else.

Why didn't they close Island 1's lid? o.O

If you ain't cool like this guy, I'd call you a coward as well.

I mean really, Gamlin-san is shaking his head at the legacy of his beloved VF-17. VF-171 you are disappoint.

Because Perry-kun is inferior to Captain Max, clearly.

What. Sheryl's opening song in the 2nd movie is called 'Mix your genes inside me'. While the first one was about being molested by herself, now it's making babies with herself.

Fanservice character makes fun of idols?

TBH closing the lid would probably have been an amazingly bad idea, given out outmatched they were. The swirly arrow displays probably confused poor old Perry. :V

Welp. I just finished watching the second movie.

I... dunno what to say. I thought it was pretty ridiculous that a giant aircraft carrier uppercuts the enemy giant aircraft carrier in the TV show.

But now we have a giant aircraft carrier surfing a piece of debris through an atmosphere to land in the giant butt of an even bigger aircraft carrier so it can attend a concert.

Par for the course, really :3

Also that reminds me, the lyrics to Dakedo Baby are pretty naughty :x

I can't feel the love through my body.

Finally managed to watch English subtitled versions of both movies. The second one especially was everything I could ever ask that a Macross movie be. I am satisfied.

The thing I really love about Macross and Frontier in particular is how the people have fully embraced the absurdity of the rules by which their world runs. In the original series, most of the crazy tactics they tried - transforming the Macross into humanoid form, the Daedelus maneuver, using Minmei's singing against the Zentraedi - were tactics of desperation that they came up with when they had no other options. By the time of Frontier, these are standard military tactics. They even have concert stages built into the bridges of their giant robot aircraft carriers, and speaker pods as an apparently standard underwing munition for the Valkyries, just in case they should happen to come up against an enemy who can only be defeated by the power of music. Which, in the Macross universe, happens pretty often.

Well you know how it is when your franchise comes from a country populated for dozens of similar series. You have to have to emphasize the things people remember.

Plus all that music makes Victor Entertainment very happy :3

I never gave much stock into the framing of such tactics like the DAIDAROS ATTACK as desperation. More just a somewhat tongue in cheek way of justifying the plans they had already made for the series when it was originally conceived as a parody.

So does anyone want to wildly speculate what is coming for the 30 anniversary next year? It is 2012 after all.

Well I watched the film last night, and it was rad. It was everything fun and goofy and cool about Macross Frontier, without the boring, forced drama sort of stuff. It was a story which benefited from the movie format. The overall dastardly plot is better communicated, though slightly less ambitious than the 'galactic hive mind' stuff in the series.
