Sometimes it is unavoidable that animals in shelter are killed. It might not even be the human's fault: I have heard of a dog killing another dog (these dogs are isolated usually). Some dogs come in such a terrible condition that even medication can't save them (there was a dog named Hope whose fur was so dirty and knotted that his flesh necrofied and was infested by maggots).

However, if you kill healthy animals that have no clear social problems (ie, they weren't abused by humans) in a shelter, then you're just slaughtering animals for no reason. I would actually find it slightly less repulsive if they ATE the animals once they killed them, so at least there is a reason for killing them.
Credo!

evilsoup wrote:I think I can sort of understand their position, even if I don't necessarily agree with it. I mean, do dogs in shelters get regular walks, or do they spend the vast majority of their time in little cages? I'm pretty sure it's the latter, which could be seen as a kind of cruelty; and unnecessary cruelty, if most dogs don't end up getting adopted. So instead of putting them through that unnecessary suffering, just put them down, as you would with any animal when the alternative is a great amount of suffering.
The difference is it's like they aren't even trying to get the animals adopted. That and they've done serious damage to the reputation of private and county adoption centers through exposes, some of them true, many of them total bullshit. These centers have been fighting for years to repair the damage PETA has done in order to up adoption rates and, at least in Texas, they are making good progress.

An unintended side-effect from their "adoption centers are evil" campaign was creating the idea that abandoned animals in these centers were too "damaged" to be adopted. So.... they just drove potential animal owners into the arms of animal breeders who were happy to take their money.

It's all bullshit because it's not about the animals, or at least it isn't anymore. It's about the money:
"In 2000, when the Associated Press first noted PETA's Kervorkian-esque tendencies, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk complained that actually taking care of animals costs more than killing them. "We could become a no-kill shelter immediately," she admitted."

PETA is run by a bunch of money grubbing fucks and financed by idiots who think their donations actually go to helping animals.

Exactly.
If they actually cared about the animals, they would spend resources of giving them a comfortable life. Yes, normal animal shelters are hardly optimal - doesn't mean that PETA would have to run theirs that way. The dogs need to move more? Then hire people walking them, or put your shelter somewhere where you have plenty of space.
But no, that costs money PETA would rather spend on stupid publicity stunts - so their animal shelters boil down to "kill the animals and stuff them into the freezer".

Stunts like this actually hurt the cause of animal rights in the long run because some people will see all the bullshit PETA peddles and refuse to listen to actual concerns because PETA has made a mockery of the entire issue. Take this thing for instance, it sounds like there could be an actual concern with the Japanese being dicks to wild-life (eminently believable) but how many people are actually going to care? How many people are going to just blow the whole issue off as some bullshit PETA made up and dismiss other sources? Because this whole thing is pathetic since most people are going to go, "Uhh... PETA, I'm pretty sure Mario is wearing an artificial/magical suit, not the skin of an animal" if they don't just dismiss the whole thing completely.

Then there is just plain offending people who might otherwise be on their side. I know my girlfriend is an animal lover but she hates the way PETA objectifies women in their adds, presenting women as meat or other objects, placing the abuse of animals as more important than the abuse of women. Then there are the people they just plain piss off whenever they compare farming to the Holocaust.

In short PETA can go take a long walk off a short pier because they frankly do more damage to the cause of animal rights than they do good.

Hear, hear. I can't even count how many times I got kicked off somebody's front porch back when I was canvassing (not for animal rights, but for a fucking conservation group), on the grounds that, "you're one of those animal crazies who throws blood at people!" or similar reasoning. PETA's shenanigans damage the cause.

There was an earlier mario game mocked by PETA (paper mario I think) bigal2k6 reviewed it on youtube.

Basically, Princess Peach was replaced by Pamela Anderson (PUKE!!!) & Bowser by Colonel Sanders, Yoshi refused to let mario ride him cause PETA say "riddin animalz eez evulz" & the heroes are two chicks. (not the fanservicey kind) I think it also had links to animal cruelty vids.

Thanks for uploading those Isolder.

"Super Chick Sisters"...

Yet they have mustaches...

And Marios Vanity Plate says "moustache ride" I wonder what the kid friendly plate says.

And bowser has a trollface thinking about Pam in Barb Wire.

I know BigAl2k6 was suspended MULTIPLE TIMES (over his EPIC jesus camp rant), but it's the name I remember & love. He deserves an honorary membership here. I'm guessing he's retired on youtube & moved to blip.tv

The only difference between the kid friendly and the normal game is it doesn't play the PETA slaughterhouse video.

The one reason you can tell this is a publicity stunt?

They haven't said shit about the Monster Hunter series, where the whole point really is to kill animals and wear their skins.

I've always gone off two assumptions about PETA:
1. Everything is a publicity stunt.
2. PETA doesn't mind animals dying, as long as PETA is the only one who decides how and when they die.

Let's face facts, I know many gamers who've never heard of Monster Hunter and I doubt any non-gamer has heard of it. I can't think of anyone that hasn't been living under a rock for the past 20 years who doesn't know the term "Mario Bros." Of gaming franchises, there's only a few I can think of offhand that have anywhere near that exposure: World of Warcraft (which hilariously lampoons PETA in Northrend), Grand Theft Auto, and Doom. But all the publicity surrounding those games is almost all negative, unlike Mario.

So, an icon like Mario, with popularity and generally positive response, is the perfect target for their shit-shoveling.

And of course all those games would be much more expensive to copy.

Also, good assumptions about PETA. I can't think of any instance where they would not be true.
