...um OK. got your self a little rant there, no problem thou.Glimmervoid wrote:To be honest I don't like it and like the old even less. They seem to be reading too much into animation goofs (like I'd argue all non-Princess winged unicorns are, until we see something definite) and despite what the picture says, we have no idea what species Rarity's father is. He could be an Earth Pony or he could be a Unicorn. He wears a hat which covers his horn.
I like the previous genetics picture even less. The idea that Fluttershy must be some kind of Earth Pegasus Alicorn* because she works with animals is absurd. It's a classic example of one-note race syndrome, of the kind that infests sci fi. One of the things I liked about the main cast of FiM is that there are characters outside the stereotypes of their race.
I will also say that the idea you need the [a] allele to use the Elements of Harmony is deeply against the spirit of the show. It's not some genetic factor which decides if you can do that. It's something inside. Something less physical. In other words, it's the power of friendship.
* On a related note, I also dislike the term alicon. Alicorn the substance a unicorn's horn is made of, damn it, not a winged unicorn. No matter what D&D thinks.
Having said that, I won't comment on that genetics work since I know almost nothing about that. It could be, an quite possibly is, perfectly accurate and well thought out.

I get a 'look guys I'm a freshman majoring in biology let me impress you all with my supposedly deep understanding' vibe from it. It is approximately based on real genetics but mixes the mechanisms of simple binary and complex traits work in a way that doesn't seem very plausible to me. But more importantly, as you say, it is not really in keeping with the spirit of the show.Glimmervoid wrote:Having said that, I won't comment on that genetics work since I know almost nothing about that. Re: My Little Pony
I wonder which few-seconds screentime's worth of background or supporting pony will have disapprotatietely large amount of fandom made out of her.
Poor Opal. So much is expected from her while she's only a kitty cat.
I feel surprisingly uncomfortable watching Rarity getting caught on a lie.
I wonder whether it is the most comforting thing to see Pinkie Pie as the first thing after you faint.
I love how the rest of the ponies have an obviously wonderful time while Rarity is suffering from her own insincerity.
Oh, and so much for their reputation as the bearers of the Elements of Harmony. If the Canterlot elite don't know them by sight, they probably are only known as the Element bearers among select people (probably somewhat for the better).

Re: My Little Pony
Well from last week's episode, and the Trixie episode, we know that taking pride in one's accomplishments / being big-headed is considered a pretty big no-no in Equestria. Maybe the flipside of that is that all the ponies feel uncomfortable with complimenting each other, or even acknowledging ponies they don't know personally, for their accomplishments (because that would force the recipient into playing down what they've done, so as not to appear arrogant).
But I say this without having seen the latest episode..

Let's move on from Mare Do Well, shall we?
In this episode, ego itself isn't the problem. Here, it's attention-seeking desire (and Rarity not quite seeing what that actually means) that's the problem and how it conflicts with what you really are (in Rarity's case, a small-town fashionista with big ambitions).

Why is it that non of the high society pony's know who the main 6 were? They freaking saved the planet twice already, and even have monuments in Canterlot castle made for them, you would thing other pony's could have remembered that rather important detail of their identity's.

Re: My Little Pony
True, I forgot about that.
Either the people invited were very select or these "elite" only know them from word of mouth (ie, they are far less important than they would like to think themselves to be), thus may have heard of the Element Bearers but did not recognise them even when they were right in front of their noses.
Plus, it would suck if all the ponies would go into aweful respect every time the Mane 6 is around, so I think there may be Selective Amnesia at work.

Re: My Little Pony
Creature? I doubt it. I would guess that in-universe, relatively few ponies know who the Element Bearers actually ARE (arguably for their own good).
That, or stuff like this happens all the time and saving Equastria (we don't know whether they just saved Equestria or the entire planet) is something that happens every once in a while. It's no big deal.
Pick whichever suits you.

Re: My Little Pony
The reason is quite simple:
Those ponies were elitist snobs. They thought that Rarities hat was gorgeous (which is was of course), but as soon as they learned that someone from Ponyville knew her (just that someone from there knew her, nothing else) they just turned away. They also liked a painting/bid for a vase at the auction simply because Rarity (who they saw as SOMEONE due to knowing important people and staying at the castle) liked it.
These aren't ponies that value accomplishments, and Rarity and the others never pointed out that they were close to Princess Celestia AND Princess Luna or anything.

While this weeks ep was quite a bit of "Fun" I felt the ending left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Rarity never really got called out for her blatant lie, but had people cover for her at every turn. The fact that the mane 6 crashed her other party isn't really a proper resolve for this. Sure it was the result of her own actiosn and lies, but it (in my eyes) reflected worse on the others rather then Rarity herself.
The whole time I kept expecting to have this breakdown moment from Rarity along the lines of 'OH TWLIGHT! I lied! I missled all of you! I'm a horrible Pony!" and then the resolution and the lesson well learned.
And really it never happend, which was disapointing (from a Moral and Karmic viewpoint) to say the least.

Re: My Little Pony
As far as I'm concerned, "Sweet and Elite" was just about 100% quality. This might just be the "Suited for Success" of season 2; it's certainly my favorite so far. Another great song, lots of entertaining cameos, and the third act was just hilarious. I found Rarity nothing but likable in it either, despite the things she did wrong. At the very least, calling her a "bitch" is way too harsh.
Karmically, she got her just desserts by the unpleasant hassle she put herself through trying to attend both parties. And frankly, I don't think she needed to learn that "lying is wrong" - because she probably already knew. She seemed to feel bad about making up those things even as she did it. The moral we got already indirectly addressed the reason for why she lied in the first place.Crossroads Inc. wrote:And really it never happend, which was disapointing (from a Moral and Karmic viewpoint) to say the least.
Judging by the oodles of fan art, it seems like that would be Fancypants's trophy wife companion. She has about a dozen informal nicknames by this point, but Fleur deLis seems to be the most common. She also looks quite a bit like a younger Celestia.Zixinus wrote:I wonder which few-seconds screentime's worth of background or supporting pony will have disapprotatietely large amount of fandom made out of her.

Re: My Little Pony
I can accept the upper class ponies not knowing them from saving Equestria, as the ponies at the celebrations after Discord was defeated looked like regular non-hoity ponies. What I do find hard to believe is them not recognising them from the Grand Galloping Gala. They pretty much showed themselves up in front of Canterlot's high class society ("Young lady, this is not that kind of a party!"). Rarity even snubbed Prince Blueblood in front of everyone (which he rightly deserved), you'd think they'd either remember that or have heard about it.
I put it down to continuity rules - maybe there's a limit to how big a call back they can have since the show is supposed to be largely stand alone episodes that can be watched in any order. If a big deal was made about them saving the whole world from evil and chaos, someone who hasn't seen those episodes might be like 'What?!'.
I have to say, I was surprised that the Rainbow Dash lie never came up. When they crashed the Garden party I half expected someone to walk up to Dash and say 'So you're the pony that trains the Wonderbolts!', followed by Rainbow's extreme reaction shot.
Oh, and did I hear right? There's going to be another Grand Galloping Gala? I know it's meant to be a yearly event, I just wonder if there's going to be another episode involving one.

Re: My Little Pony
So, I guess this episode confirms the existence of alcohol in Equestria, hence the party-crashing? That's really the only explanation I can think of for their behaviour. Or maybe they went hyper off of all the sugar at the party, that works too I guess.
I was waiting for Rarity to introduce Rainbow Dash, and get caught out on that, and have the whole fabric of lies come apart at the seams.
I'm pretty sure Fancy Pants recognised the mane cast, at least. Man, he was pretty cool. Like the opposite of Blueblood. I'm predicting at least one shipping fic on EqD by Monday.
With the very last bit, what Rarity should have said was 'well yes, I know these ponies: that's Twilight Sparkle, the princess' personal student-'*Twilight gets mobbed by social climbers*.
I don't get why Rarity lied so much. I mean, I get ingratiating herself with the Canterlot set, that's totally in-character. But couldn't she have just written 'sorry Twilight, I can't make it to your party, an amazing opportunity has come up that I simply cannot miss'? I mean seriously, she should know by now that her friends would be understanding.
Overall a pretty okay episode. Better than last week's, anyway. There were some interesting background details: now we know they have dirigibles (it's clearly not a hot-air balloon, so that means either hydrogen/helium or magic), and probably gunpowder (the party cannon - repurposed military surplus from the recent war?). Ponyville also confirmed for being the ass-end of nowhere, culturally speaking. Also, the song was probably the weakest so far, but at least it was there.
EDIT:

100% agreed, I can totally sympathise with not wanting to ruin her chances with the Canterlot set('s money) by distancing herself from Ponyville. I mean, look what nearly happened when her friends drunkenly crashed the party! If it weren't for Fancy Pants being a totally cool guy (seriously, with an English accent I was expecting him to turn out to be a secret dickhead, it was a pleasant surprise), that single thing would have totally humiliated her in front of them and ended any opportunity to make it with the posh ponies.bright wrote:calling her a "bitch" is way too harsh.
