Putin's United Russia party suffers poll setback

Post by Lord Zentei »

In the exit polls for the parliamentary elections, that is. The presidential elections are a few months away.

Short version: Putin's boys, United Russia drop from the mid sixties to just below 50%. The Communists nationalists rise to 20%. In other words, Putin might have to work with other parties to get things done (not guaranteed if he manages to add a few more MPs when the counting is done). The more important point is that without the 2/3 majority, he won't be able to change the constitution unilaterally anymore.
BBC wrote:Exit polls in Russia's parliamentary elections point to a sharp drop in support for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party.

Polls for Russian state TV and the state-backed polling organisation showed United Russia got about 48.5% of the vote, down from 64% in 2007.

That would give Mr Putin's party 220 members in the 450-seat lower house.

Russia's only independent monitoring group, Golos, logged 5,300 complaints alleging violations of election laws.

Its party chairman said United Russia hoped to remain the largest party in the lower house of parliament, or Duma.
'Violations and fraud'

If the result is confirmed, United Russia could lose its current two-thirds majority which allowed it to change the constitution unchallenged.

Nonetheless, party chairman Boris Gryzlov says the party hopes to get a majority in the Duma.

Exit polls suggest the Communists will take second place, with about 20% of the vote.

"We have received thousands of calls from regional offices, confirming massive violations and fraud," said Communist Party deputy head Ivan Melnikov on the party website.

"Throughout the day, it was like receiving reports from a war zone."

The BBC's Steve Rosenberg, in Moscow, says if confirmed, the result will be a significant embarrassment to Mr Putin, three months before he is scheduled to run again for the Russian presidency.

He says opposition parties are alleging widespread fraud, including the stuffing of ballot boxes and voters being offered money.

Mr Putin served as president from 2000 to 2008 but was prohibited by the constitution from running for a third consecutive term.

Golos, whose monitors are not affiliated with any party, said its website suffered a cyber-attack.

The organisation - whose name means "voice" or "vote" - is funded largely by the US and EU.

Prime Minister Putin has accused foreign powers of meddling in election preparations, while Duma members have questioned why a foreign-funded organisation is allowed to monitor Russian elections.

Moscow police said more than 100 people were arrested at an opposition demonstration in the city centre on Sunday.

Voted communist with much gnashing of teeth, they're not really communist at all. Still anything to sink Führer Putin, Medvedev and their band of shitheads. Of course, they falsified part of the vote and there were mass irregularities, but they rarely dare to add more than 10% to the result. So the worse they fare in the controlled elections, the greater is the chance the whole system will fucking collapse on itself in the nearest future. People are sick and tired of Putin. "12 more years of Putin!" sounds like nightmare.

I hope in 2012 the people will make the elections untenable and Putin's pyrrhic victory will soon, ca. 2013-2014, result in an eruption of violence, complete and utter delegitimization of the Russian government and the destruction of the corrupt elite without holding back a minute. I doubt the Führer will last out two terms - after a fake victory in 2012 his downfall will be a matter of time.

Too bad the clown (Zhirinovsky) always votes the same as "United Egypt", otherwise there might have been a lockdown in the Parliament with subsequent ruin, delegitimization and downfall. Oh well. A 49% in controlled elections means that the real result is around 40%. Remove the administrative pressure of "United Botswana" on the federal channels, and they'd easily lose another 10% of the vote. That leaves us with a core 30%, including mass voting in the Caucasus which siphons tons of money simply thanks to "United Zimbabwe" and their ties with the bandit Kadyrov.

In Novosibirsk, a huge Siberian industrial and scientific/uni city, "United Waziristan" actually lost to the commies (or, as latest polls demonstrate, a breakeven of 30-30%). Go. Ruin them, crush them, I hope Russia does whatever is necessary to bring these fuckers down.

I guess people aren't falling for the Macho Man bullshit routine anymore.

Just out of curiosity, why did you give support to the Communists instead of Just Russia, or one of the other parties (if the objective is to take away from UR)? Is it that they're the least of evils in your view, or that they're the largest in opposition?

Largest of opposition, lesser evil, plus a greater chance of a parliamentary lockdown. They're social-democrats in all but name and their and "Just Russia" positions are 90% overlapping, but "Just Russia" is a creation of the Kremlin to lure votes from those fake-communists. Indeed, Just Russia already said they're willing to consider a coalition with "United Russia" whom they're supposed to oppose. The LDPR are fascists, they sell votes to criminals from organized crime groups just like "United Russia" does and always vote the same as "United Russia" so no point of giving their buffoon leader any more votes. The Communists and "Just Russia" are the only parties which aren't moving outright criminals and embezzlers en masse into the echelons of power, and of them Just Russia are Kremlin stooges, so the choice was obvious.

No matter how much I hate Zyuganov personally. He's... crazy. He suppors the clerical madness which engulfed Russia and even went to the Church to kiss some old fake relic of theirs. Fuck him. He's doing everything to make me stop voting for the "legal" communists, but right now destabilization of the system and fighting "United Russia" is more important. Only once UR's dictate is dismantled and proper democratic procedures are adhered to I can concentrate on further tasks along with my compatriots in Russia.

Ah, yes: Vladimir Zhirinovsky. :D

He's got quite a reputation in the West - for those who remember him. It used to be that he had 25% in the Duma, so he was rather more worrying back then than he is today.

I don't know if you heard this one, but when Putin attempted to give compliments to the Russian winner after a "mixed fight" before this slection, the unedited broadcast caught the crowd audibly booing -- after which Putin's administration tried to claim that the crowd was booing the losing American fighter (hilariously, the venue promoter even claimed that they were booing the lack of toilet facilities or something), at which point a lot of Russians surged the American fighter's Facebook wall to clarify that no, they respected him and they were booing Putin. (Amusing trivia in light of this: Apparently the Russian fighter actually holds a UR seat in Belgorod while the American fighter is a self-proclaimed anarchist.)

I guess it was a sign of what was to come, huh? Although as others following Russia were claiming, "it looks like a sign that Putin's even lost the macho vote."

I heard that story. I had a bit of a chuckle at that.

This poll is good news. The sooner Russia is rid of Putin and his lot, the better.

It's funny, I always like to have a laugh at a man like Putin being in charge of a whole country, he's just so damn silly. Makes it really easy to forget that people have to live in that country, and that it's maybe not so funny for them.

In Germany they put pencils into the election booth. You can bring your own pen an use that but a lot of people use the pencil.
It is argued that the counting process makes it impossible to cheat, pencils are better than other types of pens because a flat pencil wont be pointy enough to show marks on the backside of the ballot. Furthermore the paper is so thin that erasing it with an eraser wouldnt work properly.

personally i find it strange and allways bring my own pen.

A spontaneous gathering of several thousand people yesterday tried to break into the Central Electoral Commitee, they were forcibly dispersed by the police with many arrests. Word goes internal forces are being amassed in Moscow. Federal channels are silent.

Some protests in Moscow, less than hoped, arrests follow.

Opposition member Boris Nemtsov is among those arrested (former deputy prime minister).

OSCE and Clinton criticize the conduct of the elections.
CNN wrote:Moscow (CNN) -- At least 250 anti-Putin protesters have been arrested in demonstrations Tuesday in Russia's capital, Moscow police told CNN.

The arrests came as demonstrators protested against the results of Sunday's parliamentary election.

Thousands of protesters had taken to the streets on Monday, and they hoped to mobilize such numbers again on Tuesday, but a much smaller turnout was witnessed.

Those who did come to protest were met with a very firm response by security forces, who dispersed many and made the arrests.

One observer of Russian politics said that the election mark the beginning of the downslide for Putin's influence, though he didn't think the prime minister's grip on power would fall immediately.

"Whatever else they reveal, Sunday's results undercut the image, common in the West, of Putin's regime as an effective authoritarian state. In fact, it is a regime that cannot even steal an election decisively," Daniel Treisman, professor of political science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and author of "The Return: Russia's Journey from Gorbachev to Medvedev," wrote in a column for CNN.

Earlier, a Russian opposition leader was arrested at an anti-government rally, he told CNN by phone.

Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister turned government opponent, was detained at a rally held to voice discontent over alleged fraud in the elections, which returned Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's party to power with a greatly diminished majority.

The opposition Other Russia party sent out invitations to the protest via Facebook under the title "Is the Revolution Continuing? Yes!"

About 800 people said they were coming to the rally, but protesters appeared to have largely dispersed as security forces moved into the area, a CNN correspondent at the scene said.

Putin's United Russia was holding a separate rally. Police said there were about 8,000 people there.

Russian security forces were on high alert pending the results of the elections, the Interior Ministry said. Officials did not say how many extra security forces were deployed or what units they were from.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for a "full investigation" of irregularities in the elections, citing "serious concern" about the vote.

Russia's Foreign Ministry dismissed the criticism Tuesday, saying "statements of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton concerning the parliamentary elections in Russia, as well as similar comments of the White House and State Department officials, are unacceptable."

Russia expects that "the U.S. will refrain from unfriendly invectives going against the common positive vector of development of our bilateral relations," the ministry said in an online statement.

Shortly after Clinton spoke, the Central Election Commission announced that Putin's party suffered a large loss of seats in the election.

United Russia will have 238 seats, down from more than 300 in the outgoing parliament, or Duma, Central Election Commission head Vladimir Churov announced, with 99.99% of ballots counted.

That will give it a slim majority in the 450-seat house.

United Russia polled just under 50%, preliminary results showed earlier. Meanwhile, the Communist Party will have 92 seats, A Just Russia will have 64, and the Liberal Democrats will have 56, Churov said.

Putin promised a reshuffle of the federal government and regional governors after the country's presidential elections, due in March, according to Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Thousands of people protested against the election results Monday in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the state news agency RIA Novosti reported, calling the Moscow event the largest opposition demonstration in years.

People shouted "Putin is a thief!" and "Putin go away!" at the Moscow rally, which was attended by more than 5,000 people, photographer Irina Kruchkova said.

She said a "huge amount of people" had shown up, mostly middle-class people aged 25 to 40 who heard about the demonstration online.

About 300 people were arrested in Moscow, RIA Novosti reported, and about 120 people were detained in St. Petersburg.

Clinton was speaking in Vilnius, Lithuania, at a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, whose election monitors also criticized the voting.

The group was expected to discuss a draft report by the organization's election-observer mission. It details alleged attempts to stuff ballot boxes, manipulate voter lists and harass election monitors.

A preliminary OSCE report on the election said some political parties had been prevented from running and the vote was "slanted in favor of the ruling party."

The group, which monitors and promotes democracy and human rights in Europe, cited the lack of an independent body running the election or impartial news media.

And there was "undue interference of state authorities" in the vote, the 56-member OSCE said in a statement.

As Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov looked on, Clinton told the group the United States had "serious concern about the conduct of the elections," and called for an investigation of reported fraud and intimidation.

"The Russian people, like people everywhere, deserve the right to have their voices heard and their votes counted," Clinton said. "And that means they deserve free, fair, transparent elections and leaders who are accountable to them."

In other news, the results in Moscow have been falsified up to 50% on top, it seems. Exit polls show 27% for "United Russia", whereas the "real" result is 47%. Many papers that demonstrate falsifications occuring in the Central Electoral Commitee have surfaced. At the lower levels the protocols show "UR" losing the elections. Look at the figures for polling station 1701:
Image
1. CPRF - 285
2. United Russia - 271
3. Just Russia - 218
4. Yabloko - 167
5. LDPR - 133
6. Right Cause - 16
7. Patriots of Russia - 15

However, later the CEC modified these figures to:
1. United Russia - 662
2. CPRF - 295
3. LDPR - 133
4. Just Russia - 118
5. Yabloko - 67
6. Right Cause - 16
7. Patriots of Russia - none.

And here's some Moscow districts voting. Look at the abnormal 94% "United Russia" peaks!

Hahaha, just take 100 votes from each of Yabloko and Just Russia and give it to United Russia. And Patriots of Russia disappearing. Nice job, there. The Patriots of Russia, aren't those guys a CPRF breakaway party? Pretty stupid to give them zero votes in a district - it's inevitable that someone would know that their vote was tossed out that way. Not that the entire enterprise isn't pretty stupid.

Also, what's that with CPRF getting 10 extra votes? Must be one of Putin's stooges having mixed loyalties.

It seems on the 10th there'll be a large (over 20k people) protest in Moscow. CPRF plus the outside-system opposition (liberals, marginal left and right parties and organization). Staying tuned and fingers crossed.
