I had an idea for a story of that sort not two hours after finishing the episode. Well, it's really more of a love triangle thing meant to expand on pink-haired arm candy pony's character. The thing is, I couldn't possibly make this idea happen. The pony-fic I'm currently working on is a pretty long-term commitment, and I only put out updates monthly. I'm afraid I don't have the time for another project on the side.evilsoup wrote:I'm pretty sure Fancy Pants recognised the mane cast, at least. Man, he was pretty cool. Re: My Little Pony
Hmm. Not bad, at least the other ponys weren't intentionally screwing up their friend like last week, only accidentally and really after the Grand Galloping Gala they should have known better how to fit in at a high class soiree.
Rarity may not have had her whole tissue of lies dissolved in front of her eyes, but in one way I think that was better, here she does at least come forward and tell the truth about the Mane Six of her own volition, rather than having to have her whole house of cards topple down around her ears before she give in.
But yes, that was probably the least memorable song yet.

Re: My Little Pony
I still find the explanation that they deliberately made complete asses out of themselves on purpose amusing. :twisted
Seriously though, Rarity should have known better. She could have arranged things to make it work (such as appearing briefly at the fancy party, like she said she originally wanted to) without lying. I kept expecting her getting caught on a lie, such as Fluttershy clearly seeing that there is nothing wrong with Opal other than she's wet.
What's worse is that it was clear that Rarity knew that she's messing up. Remember the song's ending? Remember that she was conflicted about it several times? She could not control her desire to be seen as glamorous. She made a bunch of dresses under a fortnight, I don't think it would have taken her too long. She could have even send a package explaining how she got committed into going to the fancy party, but still send Twilight her dress as a present.
Also, it seems Luna has found day-duty.

Bitch is to harsh Rarity, but i have no better work that can completely describe that specific personality trait. Do not get me wrong, Rarity is one of my favorite character, after Rainbow Dash and Derpy, but i have always found people who obsess over social appearance a little bit trying.Bright wrote: At the very least, calling her a "bitch" is way too harsh.

Re: My Little Pony
I agree that "bitch" is not quite the right word. "Bitch" implies actual malevolence, something that Rarity does not have. "Undisciplined" might be a better word or "indecisive", as she is unable to really control herself when confronted with choosing between her own interests and being generous. When confronted with the choices, she always wanted to feed the goat and keep the lettuce, even though she should know that she could only have one. I think I know what lordofchange might be talking about, although I am not sure.

Re: My Little Pony
The only thing she did wrong was lying to her friends, which was also pointless. I can't really criticise her for wanting to distance herself from Ponyville, to sell expensive clothes to rich idiots. There's also a load of social climbing involved, which I find slightly annoying, but it's not really a moral fault as 'bitch' would imply. For all that she was embarrassed of her friends, it's obvious that she'd never actually ditch them - when it came down to it, she was willing to choose them over the Canterlot set.
I think Fancy Pants (of Her Majesty's Secret Service) understood what happened, which is why he (being a true gentlecolt) backed up Rarity. Man, what a guy. Definitely my favourite one-off character so far. I hope he comes back as a recurring character, like Zecora.
Also, poor Spike, always being left behind by the girls... but then I suppose drinking industrial amounts of alcohol isn't really suitable for a baby dragon.

Yeah, really, I can't fault Rarity for the event of this episode. After all, remember we are talking about the element of generosity, of selflessness here : she literally don't know how to act for herself when she think it could hurt the ponies she care about.
When you think about it, it's a recurring theme about her : she is so bad at selfishness than every time she try it, it will inevitably go FUBAR (see "S01E16 : 'Sonic Rainboom' ").

On my use of the word bitch: It is now stricken from the record on the grounds that I was describing a personality instead of her actual actions.

Re: My Little Pony
I liked this episode, in particular the opening where Princess Celestia personally shows Rarity to her room. Celestias crown and necklace both have purple diamonds similar to Rarities cutie mark and in this episode she's given Rarity and the others access to both that suite and the castle ballroom. Though she's obviously got the resources of an entire kingdom to call on, the fact that she she meets Rarity in person shows that Celestia is quite generous and its one of her defining traits.
I'm guessing that when she and Luna wielded the Elements, Celestia had Generosity, Laughter and Kindness while Luna got Loyalty, Honesty and Magic. That mix would tip Celestia towards a sort of chaotic to neutral good while Luna would be more lawful. Nightmare Moon seemed pretty lawful evil (emphasis on lawful since she seemed obligated to let Twilight finish her speech during her defeat) and Luna seemed pretty hung up on tradition during nightmare night. I suppose there's nothing preventing Celestia from being lawful good (insofar as the DnD alignment system can apply here) but she's certainly putting more emphasis on being good and ethical than worrying over rules (she declared Rainbow Dash to be the winner of the Best Young Fliers competition despite Rainbow cheating to make herself the last person to go and the huge upset regarding Rarity and the Wonderbolts).
I guess I really like seeing Celestia when she's not pulling some Batman gambit or forgetting to mention that her pet bird is immortal.
On a related note, the pink mare who was with Fancypants looks alot like the mare on the sign at the spa in "Green isn't your Color" and by extension Celestia. I'm guessing that Celestia is considered the epitome of beauty in Equestrian society (or at least some of it) which makes sense because she's the immortal god princess. But only alicorns can properly grow into that build due to their larger size. That mare is probably an anorexic supermodel who's gone through all sorts of stuff to get herself looking that thin for her body size. Unless she's just naturally that thin.
As for Rarity, she was certainly not a bitch in this episode. She just seemed pretty nervous to be in high society and kept making up lies to get through the situations she was in. It kind of reminds me of Trixie (as did the previous episode to an extent), but while Trixie was mocking and tripping up anyone who opposed her, Rarity felt she had to make up things to avoid confrontations.
Darn it, now I've got an image of Trixie working as a waitress or something and sees Rarity during one of her lies.
Rarity: Oh yes, I know Rainbow Dash... she's the Wonderbolts trainer.
Upper Crust: Oohh, how interesting.
Trixie (forced to wait on tables now): My my my, such boasting. *looks Rarity in the eye*
Rarity: *gulp*
Fancypants: Ahem.
Trixie: Oh, yes sir. *hands him his order and then leaves, glaring at Rarity.*
I mean, its funny because Trixie pretty much did the whole boasting/lying thing that Rainbow did last episode and Rarity did now and got totally ruined by the results (and her main 'crime' was claiming to beat a monster she never imagined she'd face till some kids dragged one to town). RD got boastful last episode and Rarity saw firsthand her friends pulled some elaborate prank to 'cure' her. And in the above scenario there's pretty much no way Trixie can get revenge, just lampshade how bad that sort of stuff can go.

Please don't try and force lame D&D alignment shit onto MLP (or anything, for that matter).
I agree with the 'Celestia as epitome of beauty' point: just look at the mannequins (or whatever they're called) that Rarity uses to design her dresses around. They're clearly not designed for regular pony bodies.
However, while I think a body-image episode could be a thing to do, I strongly doubt that Fancy Pants' companion was anorexic. It stands to reason that some ponies are going to look more Celestia-like; and given that Fancy Pants is a proper gentlecolt, I don't think that he'd condone anorexia.

No, although she was in Canterlot in the first place due to business (something about picking up some fabrics or whatever). But the most likely reason was that Twilight is old enough to not have her parents at a friend thrown birthday party, Aren't the Mane 6 suppose to a in there early 20's?

I decided to watch the pilot just to see what the fuss is all about, and maybe get some ammo to mock you all.
I'm now five episodes in, and I CAN'T STOP WATCHING!

Re: My Little Pony
I like Rarity episodes. Don't know why, just do. Maybe it's because of the lack of AJ episodes...
Anyway, not as strong a showing as Suited For Success or Green is Not Your Color (that one really managed to show off her Element, I feel), but good still. I'm in agreement that Fancy Pants being all cool with the Mane 5 acting uncouth was a little unexpected, but extremely welcome and I join in hoping we see more of him later on. "Popularity" isn't as good as "Art of the Dress" for a Rarity song, but I like how in both they address the character's conflict in the episode. A nice use of the music, there.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the upcoming Spike episode. As I've said various times, the Twilight's Mother/Big Sis dynamic with Spike is one of my favorites and I love seeing the show use it. Hopefully they'll do so once more.

It was actually the MLP video review Sfdebris did that got me watching. It was funny in itself, but the clips he showed of the show made me think "This looks so much fun!" that I had to give it a go, and after that it was Pringles all the way ...
