Holy shit, CNN actually managed to show still images of the correct MiG types! Of course they then showed video of MiG-21's for three times as long.

Whole country if they move there most shitty of SSBN's well out into the pacific. But they never do that, I doubt the engines would hold up anyway.phongn wrote:The DPRK can hit Alaska. I meant their land-based missiles; their boomers probably would be sunk the moment the US SSN tailing it heard their tubes opening.Sea Skimmer wrote:Whole country if they move there most shitty of SSBN's well out into the pacific. Nothing much around to harass that doesn't have guns. There navy can't range out very far and there's a carrier battlegroup steaming in the area. Submarines and aircraft now conduct most of the missions Pueblo and her kin did, IIRC a number of older destroyers where refitted after the capture to continue Intel operations off Korea. I doubt any unarmed Intel vessels are within 500 miles, though the USN does have some.EmperorMing wrote:So what will NK do for their next act of provocation and belligerance?
Probably harrass someone at sea...
Harassing armed vessels has this little problem that directly overlying a warship is an act of war. given the battle between Northern and southern small craft last year, any USN warship is probably going to shoot if it feels threatened in any way.

Likely. But harassing aircraft is really the only choice unless they start shooting. However the same tricks really work twice. And with additional F-15's being dispatched to Japan, future Rivet Joint flights are going to have an escort.EmperorMing wrote:Yeah, the naval assets steaming into the area slipped my mind fo rthe moment.

Oh, and china doesn't really have all that many missiles that can reach the US...

Incidentally, supposing that a nuke from NK somehow hit LA, just suppose. What would the US do in return.
And no "we'll glass them", I already got that point, I'm thinking what would go through the Joint Chiefs and President's mind after hearing a sizeable chunk of LA was now uninhabitable... more so.

It's not The End. The correlation of forces is grossly in the favour of the United States.Necro99 wrote:If china suffers from the radiation expect retailation. Why are you comparing an RC-135 to an A-50? Their missions are completely different!Would the US let a Mainstay Spy Plane spy in their territory from international waters?

Mainstay's are AEW aircraft, not spy planes.Necro99 wrote: Would the US let a Mainstay Spy Plane spy in their territory from international waters?

The Nimrods can carry a multitude of munitions if need be, for air defence they do sometimes have anything upto 4 Sidewinders.TrailerParkJawa wrote:Ive seen a British Nimrod packing a Sidewinder for self defense, but I heard that militaries dont always arm a recon plane even if they could. Those where thrown on as a emergency measure during the Falklands out of a fear Argentina would find a way to fly fighters out of Port Stanley. As it turned out, they could never sufficently extend the runway. Without a HUD or radar, its questionable how effective they would be even if an attacker could be gotten into the missile field of view. Its more likely the points would be used for Harpoons in combat.TrailerParkJawa wrote:Ive seen a British Nimrod packing a Sidewinder for self defense, but I heard that militaries dont always arm a recon plane even if they could. I'm not aware of any other patrol aircraft with AAM's, though the Bear's and Badger bombers the Soviets converted for the task retained there 23mm guns.

I'm sure the P-3 Orion could carry some AAMs if need be like the Nimrod, just in case. The E-3 Sentry/AWACS also carries AAMs on the RAF and UN model.Sea Skimmer wrote:Those where thrown on as a emergency measure during the Falklands out of a fear Argentina would find a way to fly fighters out of Port Stanley. This was more recent than the Falklands, I saw a clip someplace about the newest remodel of the Nimrod and they showed a sidewinder. It could very well have just been for testing and not general practice to arm it so.Sea Skimmer wrote: Those where thrown on as a emergency measure during the Falklands out of a fear Argentina would find a way to fly fighters out of Port Stanley. You'd need to rewire the wings. You can mount and use a Sidewinder on a P-51 easily. However the fact remains that the capacbility doesnt currently exist.Admiral Valdemar wrote:I'm sure the P-3 Orion could carry some AAMs if need be like the Nimrod, just in case. If British or NATO E-3's have ever flown with Sidewinders, I've never heard of it. Waste of weapon life, since the aircraft turns like a cow and would be heading away from any attacker.
