Hehe, I know a kid who drove a forklift straight through a convertible while working at a plant nursery and had to take a drug test because of it. :D

Even more reason to use a forklift. Those things can move pretty fast when you put your foot down, and there's no reason to go spelunking in a huge warehouse unless you plan to bring something back, which requires the forklift.
Ive seen warehouses that use small electric powered vehicles to move down long passages where a forklift cant fit, isnt allowed, or is overly expensive. Again, its for picking smaller items. Not everything in a warehouse requires a forlift. Ive worked in warehouses where we only needed a forklift 10-20% of the time.

So? The Segway P.O.S. would still be worthless in those situations.

Why?

I personally think a bicycle with a basket is more practical and economic solution but I would not say the Segway is worthless.

I wouldn't say worthless. It is just too expensive to be practical. In a sense, it is worth too much to be used in that way. :D

In case you didn't notice, the thing has a cargo capacity of precisely ZERO. Therefore, it's worthless in a warehouse.

The idea for cities is that it would be used for trips that are too long to be walked quickly or comfortably, but short enough to be wasteful and inconvenient to drive. If you're someone who lives and works in the city, it might even make more sense to own a Segway instead a car. The problem is where to drive it. I was just in Center City Philadelphia today, and you'll clobber some old lady with it on the sidewalk and get run over by a bus in the street. Other parts of the city have dedicated bicycle paths and lanes, but I still wouldn't be comfortable in the street with a vehicle that can only go 12 miles per hour.

So? Not everybody that works in a warehouse has to haul cargo. And it's quicker to have them use something rather than have to know how to drive a forklift.

You've obviously never worked long shifts in places with warehouses.

Spelunking about on forklifts, handcarts (dangerous but fun) and other things is a great time killer.

Our mailman in Chandler, AZ was given a Segway to test last summer. While he said it did make it easier to endure the 115 degree F heat, it took him a lot longer to do his route, mounting and dismounting the thing at every apartment building, parking it, etc, etc.

I also heard that mailman aren't too keen on the Segway in cold weather since "you end up like a frozen popsicle". I think that was in Business Week.

Ah...racing pallet jacks is exhilerating, but quite dangerous. Especially as you turn the corner and clip a box with a 32" TV inside and tumble head over heels as the jack comes to a halt.

What about really, really big warehouses? I'm talking about Huuuge ones
where it becomes necessary to use bikes to move from one point to
another efficiently
Then you use bikes, like they do now. Like some manufacturer is gg to spend $5K on a fragile POS that'll only add to expense, replacement, and safety woes, for a foreman to ride around on when they can get a crap bike for $50.

Segway motorized cart... was this the "IT" thing tha was all over the news, that was a huge secret but the invention was really obvious and the rich offered all kinds of money to develop it?

What a load. The only reason why this COULD be cool is if a bunch of stoner skateboarders do trick with it. I, on the other hand, will never buy one, unless it's used and I could get one for about a hundred bucks. Or less.

When the article about the Segway scooter first came out, I commented that the inventor has obviously never been to Canada.

Around here, they attach old weedwhacker motors to scooters and ride them around at all hours of the night. You can hear the fucking things coming and going all the way up the street.

The Segway is actually very important because of its egineering and computer control systems. Because of technology pioneered for civilian aplication in the Segway, newer wheelchair type systems are being developed that will give people who do not have the use of their legs greater mobility. They are already developing a wheelchair that can climb flights of stairs and raise from 4 wheels to 2 and bring the person to eye level with standing people.
That's great, and they couldn't have just developed that instead of the Segway because...?

It's impractical, you can't go faster than a walking pace on pavements because of all the pedestrians in cities (and you sertainly would never take that thing on a road!), it's over expensive for what it is (a scooter), it encourages laziness (how difficult is it relly to walk somewhere that's a mile or two away? ), and it would be worthless in winter or in rain (as your body isn't working to replace lost heat).

Bikes are a better alternative. As is simply walking in the first place.

Yep, the speculation at the time was that it was going to be an Aircar, or maybe a replacement code and veiwer for the net (among other suggestions floated at the time0, instead we get an underpowered, self-stabilising scooter for people with too little stamina and too much money.
