Earthquake off Japan (again)

TOKYO — A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 earthquake hit off the shores of Japan’s southern Pacific island.

The Meteorological Agency says the offshore quake Sunday struck about 370 kilometers (230 miles) below the sea surface. The agency said there was no danger of a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Northeastern Japan was devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11 that left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing. Japan, which lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is one of the world’s most seismically active countries.
Well about 1/100th the power of the big one last year, but still not fun.

Also no tsunami- the quake wasn't nearly as damaging in Japan as the tidal waves, from what I remember.

This is also true. I was just trying to give energy levels for people.

Its been downgraded to a 6.8 know; but it is worth remembering that location and depth matters as much as intensity once you start getting into the 6+ range. The Kobe earthquake of 1995 was about this size as I recall, but kill over 6,000 people because it was very shallow and very close to a city center built heavily on landfill.

Well, if it's near Japanese Pacific Islands, then it shouldn't affect the Home Islands too badly, unless this triggers the Big One near Tokyo somehow.
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.
