That was a great episode.
Magic apples, awesome - the second series seems to be making a point of showing off earth pony magic (and it's fantastic - the weird nature of the zap-apple preparation reminds me of Pinkie Pie's antics) Granny Smith continues to be great... and we now know that Ponyville is fairly new.

Hrm...

We know that Celestia was planning for NMM's return long in advance, including specifically choosing Twilight to have that test with the dragon egg - could it be that she told the apple family to go to that specific place, so that there would be a town nearby the old palace where the EoH were? Since most other cities, both old (Canterlot, Cloudsdale) and new (Aaaaaaaappleousia) don't seem to be as mixed as Ponyville, it could also be that she encouraged other ponies from all the tribes to settle in Ponyville so that there would be a population to draw holders of the elements from that was sufficiently cosmopolitan.

-Granny Smith founded Ponyville? Wasn't it said to hundreds of years old in Winterwrap up?
-Olden Days Celestia still has rainbow hair. Fanon cancelled?
-Holy crap, fewest main cast members ever?
Well it was really more of a Granny Smith episode. Or at least she stole the episode, IMO. And I don't think there's ever been a direct reference to Ponyville's age. And pink-hair Celestia is supposed to be from before the first NMM incident.

But yeah, AJ was reduced to a small supporting role, and the rest weren't even in it. ALSO this is two episodes in a row with no letter to the princess.
And also one of the ingredients to making a pony is cocaine. -Darth Fanboy.

Didn't Granny Smith say the other 2 tribes settled there because of the new apple trade springing up?

Checked 18:50-19:60 on my post of the episode and Smith says they came there for the jam and just resided to stay.

What fanon? The notion that Celestia used to have pink hair is canon fact. It can just be assumed to have changed over earlier on.

Yeah, Celsetia is 1000+ years old while Smith is at most a few hundred.

I believe Bright is talking about What Celestia looked like in the opening of episode 1, she had pinkish hair.

Oh yes. That's clearly a canon fact then. Rather than a simplified representation of her.

Well, yes. Compare the simplified representation of Luna to the Luna we saw in episode 2. The colors match up. There's no reason to assume Celestia's wouldn't.

That's how Granny Smith remembers it, but I don't think many ponies would decide to live somewhere just for a tasty kind of apple that only grows every few years.

ALSO urgh I hope 'What are you, a dictionary?' isn't going to become Scootaloo's catchphrase.

Oh yeah and when Scootaloo had her first idea, after Apple Bloom said she was feeling sick, for a moment I thought she was going to suggest poisoning the rest of the class.

As I watch:

Granny Smith is best pony.

Not even Pinky Pie could be so random as to start hopping around in a bunny suit because... well...erm.. you know.

Seriously, she is certainly the coolest. She clearly does not give a darn about what people think.

Wait, Sweety Belle and Scotalooo are in Apple Bloom's class now! WTF?

Heh, the CMC clubhouse seems to have been upgraded. There is now a small tower with a telescope.

Oh wow, for a moment I thought they were using a puppet, not the ACTUAL Granny Smith. And her disregard for the fact that SHE HAS HER FRONT LEGS TIED TO SOMETHING is just... wow.

Hmm, we have a rough map. Somehow I am guessing that Ponyville is relatively close to Canterlot.

Oh, Granny Smith's mom's expression when her husband kisses Celestia's hoof.

Timberwolves... made of timber. Lol.

Clapping with hooves. I thought they stomped the ground. Then again it must be difficult to do that when they are sat that way. Come to think of it, that pose seems rather weird for a pony.

Oh, and we have the new meme pony: the fat little boy-pony with the grey mane, brown hair and a knife-and-fork cutiemark.
-Man, if any pony needed an episode centering on family appreciation its not Apple Bloom. It's Scootaloo. Obviously Ponyville orphanage is not a story anypony wants to tell.
Oh, come on.
-Granny Smith founded Ponyville? Wasn't it said to hundreds of years old in Winterwrap up?
I don't recall a date mentioned.

Of the part of the Episode I have seen, the one where the free dresses are made for the protagonists...and they stick their penneth-worth in changing details and making the dresses fugly.

The Aesop was decidely less saccharine than the old cartoon. Rather than 'Everybody should be Friends happy hugs!' it was 'If someone's offering to make you something for free, don't be a jackass about it' which is a pretty good message.
So I guess 'Don't look a gift horse in the mouth (hah!)'.

Are you talking about the Art of the Dress (I think that's the episode name)? Because if you are not talking the last episode (the one involving Zapapples), then you just posted a very confusing post.

Art Of The Dress was the song name. The episode was called 'Suited For Success'

Is this a reply to someone's old comment? Your post seems kinda random. The episode is also about appreciating what your friends do for you when they don't need to.

That episode was especially well-written, in my opinion because in addition to the stated moral of 'don't look a gift horse in the mouth' the story also slipped a quiet one under the radar. Namely, one along the lines of "when a person has more experience in a given field than yourself, you should trust their judgement."

All of Rarity's friends thought they knew better than the pro dressmaker what kind of outfit would look great on them, but in the end they turned out to be a colossal flop and Rarity's original designs were a massive hit. I was actually a little surprised that the episode's moral was the stated one, because it seemed so clear to me that it was going to be "trust an expert."

I've also heard that it was a subtle dig at TPTB/Execs, sort of saying "Look, we know how to make this show a success, we don't need you telling us to keep adding things in because you think you know better." I've heard Faust complained about some of the guidelines and restrictions imposed on the creative process of the show (such as not making it too scary for little kids). In a way Suited for Success could be seen as nod towards that - if they keep piling on conditions and requirements and 'suggestions' it could very well flop, but if they let them do their own thing then MLP will be a hit. In other words trust the producers and writers to do their job without excessive outside input.

I've read that this latest episode shows an example of earth pony magic, in the zap-apples, and the things that have to be done to grow and prepare them. I disagree with this, and I'll explain why.

The sillyness we see with the zap-apples is a series of procedures arived at through observation and experimentation, which achieve predictable, repeatable results.

Well yes, but some of the stuff (like painting the room with pink dots or shouting at the jamjars)... how would you come across that stuff with just observation? Why would it even occur to granny smith to try jumping over the watering cans in a rabbit costume reciting the alphabet, to see if it increases zapapple yields? That intuition is what I would call the earth pony magic.

Zap-apples aren't an example of earth pony magic. they are a naturally occurring fruit found in the Everfree Forest.
