SOPA and PIPA - support/opposition in Congress on 18/1/2012

Post by SpaceMarine93 »

SOPA talks and vote is scheduled to be held on 24th of January. The following journalist website shows which congressmen supports it and which ones don't as of today:

http://projects.propublica.org/sopa/

The current situation is quite bleak, don't you think?

Why the hell do you keep posting new threads about SOPA and PIPA? There are plenty already, surely? Wouldn't it make much more sense to keep all this shit in one thread instead of putting it all over the place?

I am just trying to get the info out on who in the congress actually support or oppose the bill. In that way people will know who to write to.

Yes, but why not put all SOPA/PIPA related content in a single thread instead of spreading it out over multiple threads? Does that or does it not make sense? Especially since you've posted so many threads on the subject.

I guess we'll have to decide how to merge all SOPA/PIPA threads. Considering there's only so many of them, I'll merge them all into one, except possibly for the Murdoch/Google thread... though it is related too.
Lì ci sono chiese, macerie, moschee e questure, lì frontiere, prezzi inaccessibile e freddure
Lì paludi, minacce, cecchini coi fucili, documenti, file notturne e clandestini

Uccelli migratori, reti, informazioni, piazze di Tutti i like pazze di passioni...

I took a look at the website you linked to in your top line. For SOPA, 32 for, 25 against, 376 "unknown," which probably translates as "our website is too lazy to do the research." Real discouraging.

PIPA, 48 for, 6 against, 46 "unknown," which again suggests that this website isn't paying attention since by now practically everyone in Congress will have declared for or against the bill. They probably just copy-pasted the list of co-sponsors of the bill in, tacked on another 15 or so of the other 60 senators, and decided to call it a night.

Hint: the average SDNer who's paying any attention at all already knows about SOPA/PIPA, and has no trouble looking this shit up. You have no unique, special qualification that makes you our designated "keep an eye on this law" guy.

I am never stepping into News and Politics section again.

Dude you can step into the news and politics just don't knee jerk post threads. Use your head and think about it, ask yourself is this redundant and is this needed? If it seems to be original and not already addressed then go post it.

That is enough from the peanut gallery. Back on topic or you will be modded.

Talk about missing the point. YOU DON'T GET TO DECIDE WHAT IS AND ISN'T A LEGITIMATE USE OF THE INTERNET. Not without consent of the public.

Score one for democracy and freedom of expression, I guess.

Its good to see people won't swallow something like this, and that some legislators can still be persuaded to back down.

What the politicians forget is that intent means nothing. If the law expressly allows for something, it will happen. Overly broad laws are notorious for being used against people that were never intended. Like the Patriot Act.
"If the facts are on your side, pound on the facts. If the law is on your side, pound on the law. If neither is on your side, pound on the table."

"The captain claimed our people violated a 4,000 year old treaty forbidding us to develop hyperspace technology. Extermination of our planet was the consequence. The subject did not survive interrogation."

One need only look at the EFF's DMCA Takedown Hall of Shame for examples of a law being abused.

Only if the protest fails. An unreasonable attack on internet freedom, home to one of the largest and best informed populations, should fail by dint of netizen numbers and resources backed by intelligence and skill.

Otherwise, attacks on freedom should always be expected anyway and people should always be ready to stand up for their rights and the rights of others. Its not like a Hollywood movie where the good guys win the 'final' battle and live happily ever after behind the invincibility shield of the credit roll. More like a Saturday morning cartoon where the hero foils the villain weekly.

Come to think of it, that Murdoch character is stock cartoonishly villainous and the perfect personification of the SOPA goons. When they try again, it may almost certainly be with an extensive PR makeover.
