The Palestinian Josef Fritzl? The Qalqilya Police on Saturday freed a 20-year-old woman who was locked in a bathroom for over nine years.
The woman's father admitted to locking up his daughter since she was 11-years-old, citing a "family dispute" as the reason behind her prolonged imprisonment.
When police officers arrived at the house, they discovered a locked door. The owner of the house refused the officers' demands to unlock the door, claiming his daughter was using the bathroom. The woman heard the commotion and started screaming for help. She told police officers that her father had the key to the door.
After finally unlocking the door, the officers were surprised to discover a young woman sprawled on the floor, next to a pillow and a blanket.
The officers took the woman, who has not seen daylight for almost a decade, to the local police station, where she was given food, clothing and a social worker. The father was taken into custody.
The rescue operation was made possible by intelligence obtained by the police. The officers of the West bank city noted the woman thanked them for saving her after long years in captivity.
What the fuck? How did he keep her in there that long? Bathroom doors aren't known for their strength, generally. And they usually lock from the inside…
Keeping someone in a room is not hard. In this case, all he'd have to have done was switched the door for a stronger door, and get a double sided (Needs a key to open it at both ends) deadbolt or similiar.

Or put something behind the door such as a cabinet or table.

I've heard of this in at least one Saudi autobiography, as a traditional punishment. It's said to come from the Qu'ran:
4:15 As for those of your women who are guilty of lewdness, call to witness four of you against them. And if they testify (to the truth of the allegation) then confine them to the houses until death take them or (until) Allah appoint for them a way (through new legislation).
I've not heard of it elsewhere though, so I'm not convinced it's common, but there's at least one brand of Fundie islamic crackpot that thinks confining women in cells in the home until they die is the command of god.

Your saying it's unlikely he could not spent the equivalent of twenty dollars or scavenged a new set of hings or out and out just cannibalized door from elsewhere to replace the bathroom door? If the story is correct your talking about someone who has locked his daughter inside a room for years. That kind of commitment requires forethought, it's not something you decided on the spur of the moment, you decided to lock someone in a room for years and keep them alive? You have to do some planning for that kind of sadistic operation.
I remind you this is someone who per the story locked someone in a room for years, is it seriously that much effort to spend two hours hanging a new door he can lock from the outside.
*Edit
Secondary possibility, it's an addition room, one of the old houses I lived in years back in Connecticut had a first floor bathroom that used to be a washroom that had a lock on the door because it used to open out onto the yard (An extension had been built from the old back door onto a new bedroom)

This is pre-WWII. You can sort of tell from the sketch style, from thee way it refers to Japan (Japan in the 1950s was still rebuilding from WWII), the spelling of Tokyo, lots of details. Nothing obvious... except that the upper right hand corner of the page reads "November 1931." --- Simon_Jester
Jesus christ, swapping out a lock is a five minute job, and some people in this thread are making it out to be something impossible/requiring tremendous effort
He could've used any number of simple tricks to keep that door locked and secure. Does it even matter which ones in particular were applied here?

Hell, he could have just added a sink hook to the door and frame, and it wouldn't open from the inside while locked.
Of course, that wouldn't explain why the police demanded he unlock it.
I'm still with the 'key to open both side' approach. Simplist, most direct, and easiest to hide if you have a second bathroom.

Hint people: keep the poor woman malnourished and she will be incapable of fighting her way out of a cardboard box, never mind a door of any kind.

To play a bit of devil's advocate here, notice that it says "houses" not "one room in the house". That may have been a more reasonable idea in less urban areas.
I can sort of understand the logic of keeping your "lewd" daughter in house arrest, but only in a bathroom? I'd be afraid to meet such a fucked-up individual.

Especially since she was 11 years old. Most doors would hold her long enough to get a sturdy one. Especially since she won't break down the door immediately. By the time she realized it was for real, it was too late.

Also its not going to be the best idea to just smash down the door, as a young undernourished woman if all you're going to find on the other side is an insane angry father.

lewdness =
a.Preoccupied with sex and sexual desire; lustful.
b. Obscene; indecent.
Umm, seems like she told she had a boyfriend (meaning whatever a 11yo girl thinks a boyfriend is, not necessarily and imho not likely to mean she wanted sex or was lustful or whatever) and the shithead locked her up.

Exactly.
Angry Nutcase Dad > door lock
More like he'd be the one trying to smash it.
Still, he's far outta the league of nazi monsters like Fritzl.
