ST vs. DS1

Post by McNum »

You've probably heard this one before... But I've never seen the conclusion...

What would happen if the Feds got their hands on the DS1 plans and found the same weak spot as the Rebels exploited?

Would the Federation have be able to exploit the flaw? If not, could anyone else in the ST galaxy exploit it?

Peronally I'd say that it would depend on the size of the non beam weapons. If they can muster a missile weapon with a diameter less than 2 meters it might be possible. Of course to get in range there is the trouble with Turbolasers...

Possible, but unlikely. Their photon torpedos do not seem to be accurate enough to enter the port, and the launching ship is probably not survivable enough to make it close enough to launch the weapon.

I don't think photon torpedoes can turn like a proton torpedo. So the feds die.

Main problems for the feds:
1. TIEs: feddies are easy prey for the TIEs especially considering they're fighting in an environment with heavy jamming
2. DS defense canons: runabouts have never displayed the kind of maneuverability SW fighter craft have, and shuttles don't have torpedoes
3. even if they're able to make the trench run, their torps haven't shown the ability to execute turns like SW proton torpedoes.
A fed victory is extremely unlikely.

Unlikely given that the Rebels suceeded because

A. Luke was guided by the Force
B. The Proton Torpedo was able to make the needed turn
C. Craft could withstand the suvival need into and during the Trench Run

Speaking of the Trench Run. Is that a requirement?

The main objective would be to get a torpedo into the exhaust port. Why not shoot it in from above?
The ship that fired would be toast in a few seconds, but it would be easier to hit the target from a 90 degree angle. That would eliminate the high-G turn requirement.

Not that the odds are good for the Feds, but I'm just curious if they could...

Given the size of the object and where it sits...yeah, the Trench run was needed to get over the target.

They made the trench run so that they could get near their target without flying by all those guns on the surface.

More ort less, yeah. If they had come in from straight above the port, then almosty all the weaponry on that hemisphere can target them. If they come in via the trench, they only have to worry about a few turrets and TIES.

Um-all the weaponry on that hemisphere should be able to target them while they make their dive for the beginning of the trench.

The Death Star is a bloody sphere, so no matter what surface feature they're going for half the DS's weapons should have a clean line of fire until they get there

Yes, but the X-wings could manoeuvre in an erratic until they were in the trench and not worry about targeting the small port. Once they were in the trench they had some cover and could concentrate on hitting the exhaust port.

Conceeded.

Is it me, or does that spelling seem wrong?

Hadn't thought about that... Evading half a Death Star's worth of Turbolasers and hitting a two meter wide target at the same time does seem a little difficult...

I was actually referring to my spelling of 'conceeded'

Hey, no worries. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you have no enemies

Going by your screenname, you wouldn't happen to be german, would you?

Wouldn’t Trek torps just impact on the surface even if they managed to bulls eye the exhaust port, because the torps are too big? I thought I saw Wong say something about this somewere on the main site.

This thread has been done before, many times. One of the theortical battles in the battles area already answered this. Actually, I thought a couple of runabouts could pull off a successful trench run using micro quantom torps, if those have been invented. However, I could be wrong.

The exhaust port is 2 meters wide, how big is a photon torpedo?
IIRC the problem is a photon torpedo cannot make the turn.

A photon torpedo would fit in the exhaust port, but couldn't get in after a trench run.

What about a microtorp?

The microtorp is smaller than a photorp so size is not an issue. IMO turning 90 degrees at the end of the trench run would be impossible.
