Keep going...it's always nice to hear other people quirks...makes for great reading material of how unique and cool people are.Zaia wrote:Are you guys serious? Wow, I wonder if this is a girlie thing or a me thing... Hmm.........
See, just about everyone in my life has a song, or two, or ninety-seven (as is the case of my first love). Every guy I've ever had a sizable crush on has had a song. I think my cats even have songs. Weird.
Ok, if you care, here's how my brain works:
Ando = "Pure Morning" by Placebo--it was playing in the background of one particularly fun day in the pool room at college, so whenever I hear that song, I think of that day, and consequently of Ando. It's one of the few memories I have of us not arguing, so I like it.![]()
Sarah (Ando's gf and my best friend) = "Crash and Burn" by Savage Garden--when I left Australia, Sar and I were having tough times, so it's nothing short of amazing that she and I have only gotten closer since then. Not only do I have fabulous memories of the two of us mimicking the video from this song with all the sign language, but the words really ring true when one of us really misses the other.
Let me be the one you call
If you jump, I'll break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart, I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash, then crash and burn
You're not alone
I could go on and on and on, but a) I don't think you care, and b) I don't think you care.
When I hear ___, I think of ____.

*chuckle* You think this is a quirk? Uh oh.....baby [singing] we've only just begun... [/singing]
Alright, let me see, let me see... Who else would be interesting to you guys?
First love of my life (Keith): "Winter" by Tori Amos
When you gonna make up your mind?
When you gonna love you as much as I do?
Best friend in Utah (Katy): "Best of What's Around" by Dave Matthews
See, you and me
Have a better time than most can dream
Have it better than the best
And so can pull on through
Whatever tears at us
Whatever holds us down
And if nothing can be done
We'll make the Best of What's Around
Current boy interest (Brian): "I Want You to Want Me" by Cheap Trick
Self explanatory, no?
My friend Stan: any Metallica song ever written
Reminds me of when he and I drove up to Camden, NJ to buy scalped tickets to a concert in July when it was 197 degrees and we ended up in the MOSH PIT!!
My brother's best friend (Matt): "Beautiful Disaster" by 311
He and I had a thing, and then we didn't, and then we sort of did again, and..and....yeah.
You're a butterfly in the wind without a care
A pretty train crash to me and I can't care
Another Sarah: "Blurry" by Puddle of Mudd
Ok, so I don't even really like them all that much, but I kept hearing this on the radio and think of Sarah every single time.
I wonder what you're doing, imagine where you are
There's oceans inbetween us; that's not very far...

Oh cool...no the reason I like hearing these things is because I find them interesting...seriously.
My oddest quirk in somewhat that vein is how I write characters(when I write for myself and not someone else's persay)
An example would be the last indie comic I wrote for...
My best friend became one of the character...an old girlfriend another...myslef became almost too obvious(if you've met me in real ife
)...etc.
Usually friends become some odd hero or villain or what not...hearing things like how people associate others with songs and what not shows me that people have some of the coolest ways of looking at life and the world around them.

One more and then I'll stop tormenting you with the strange workings of my brain.
This goes back to the first love again. This song is really his song--the other one is 'eh' as far as it relates to him (those two lines I posted are very much him), but this entire song is him. It's called "Ghost" and it's by the Indigo Girls. Here's a piece of it:
Now I see your face before me
I would launch a thousand ships
To bring your heart back to my island
As the sand beneath me slips
As I burn up in your presence
And I know now how it feels
To be weakened like Achilles
With you always at my heels
This bitter pill I swallow
Is the silence that I keep
It poisons me; I can't swim free
The river is too deep
Though I'm baptized by your touch
I am no worse than most
In love with your ghost
In love with your ghost
You are shadowing my dreams....
Ok, that's all. Off to bed now. If you like gorgeous, folky music with beautiful harmonies, this is the song for you. Good night.

I like it a lot myself, because every time I hear one of those songs, I get a warm feeling inside, like I'm hearing their voice or something.
*chuckle* When I've tried to write, I've had that happen too. I wonder why that happens? Is it because we love them so much, we put them places they don't necessarily have to be? Or is it that we're so egocentric that we hear and see our lives where we aren't and twist it to fit? I guess I would twist more than you, though, since you get to create your characters and I have to work with what pre-exists. I really like this thread, and may add a bunch to it later, but all I have right now is a generic feeling for so many of the people that have passed through my life along the way.
More Than a Feeling by Boston
I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away
It's more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
'till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away
So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
as clear as the sun in the summer sky
It's more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
'till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away
When I'm tired and thinking cold
I hide in my music, forget the day
and dream of a girl I used to know
I closed my eyes and she slipped away
She slipped away. She slipped away.

Yeah i get that a lot. When a certain song comes on i am reminded of certain momentous events in my life. I've been engaged 3 times, i've saw peace in Northern Ireland only to be broken, i've seen people shot in front of me. shit no wonder i'm a clinical depressive.

When I hear "The Ghost of Tom Joad," I get goosebumps. Every single time.

Whenever I hear Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution byAC/DC I remember this drunk stripper who fell off the runway on top of me and a couple of other guys. It was late Easter Sunday in Pensacola, Florida in a really dumpy strip joint that used to be a large filling station.

And here's a song for my GF who's brightened up and added so much to my life. 'Course I'm not a girl but the words work well enough.
"Before You" by Chantal Kreviazuk
Baby, before you
Well, I was bad news
In lettin' me love you
I think I can get through
Oh, baby before you
Well, I was so scared
I was a train wreck waitin' to happen
On the way to nowhere
And now I think it's kinda funny that you say you love me
You tell me that I'm crazy then you smile
And now I think I'll get through
The end of the world
And now I think I'll get through
Bein' a girl
Now I think I'll get through
Anything
And now I think I'll get through
Now honey around you
I'm feelin' so good
'Cause you picked me up out of the rough
And you polished me up and made me brand new
And baby before you, ho ho
There was just a black hole
Yeah I was beat down, blacked out
My darling you couldn't even know
But ever since I met you on a cloudy Monday
I can't believe how much I love the rain
And now I think I'll get through
The end of the world
And now I think I'll get through
Life as a girl
Now I think I'll get through
Anything
Now I think I'll get through

Whenever i here Hello by Lionel Ritchie i am always reminded of a time i had in Kenya while i was on holiday.
There was a girl there that was so beautiful, like when she walked in the bar every male aged 13-25 watched her, and me, my bro and a few friends we made were all in a small competition to see is one of us could pull her. I finally got the courage up to try and talk to her and we got a bit friendly ( i learned that she was 13 (myself being 16 at the time) but she was that damn beautiul!). There was a disco at the hotel each night and the DJ always finished off with some slow dances. It was the last night she was there and he started playing Hello. I asked her if she wanted to dance and she said ..... no. I persisted throughout the entire song and she kept on refusing. I'll never forget that. Looking back now i think "God, i must acted like a jerk""

I always associate "Want You Bad" by the Offspring with a longtime exgirlfriend of mine. The first time we heard it we were....well, nevermind what we were doing. After that, whenever it came on, it was sort of an automatic makeout song, unless we were in public or church or something.

Remember the current boy interest? Well, he's the reason my sig is what it is. From a song called "Hopeless" by Train:
Are you strong enough to tow the line?
Are you gonna make me yours, or do I make you mine?
I figured I'd add that today since I had a good day with him and I've listened to this song about 70 times for those two lines to remind me of him. Yes, I am a dork.

It's funny how the same songs can mean such different things to different people. Or how some silly throw-away pop songs can forever be linked to monumental events in your life.
It still amazes me that a bunch of organized sounds can make you laugh or cry or take you back to a very specific moment.

Behold the power of music. I have about 50 songs that, if I put them on and close my eyes, I can hear, smell and feel Australia around me again. That's how powerful that kind of magic is. Yeah, I have some time machine comp lists in my head for certain moods, certain times and places, certain people. Most of the cuts are too obscure or too personal for me to post, but it is amazing how music can take you away, complete with sense memories.
As a fellow player, do you have certain licks that remind you of specific things? haha that came out wrong. You know what I mean, certain fingerings, specific fills, solos? The guitar part for Every breath you take can be taxing if you're not limbered up, and mangling the chords to that song always takes me right back to a night my band in high school learned that song. Damn that Andy Summers and his jazz background!

When i hear Queens The Show Must Go On i am reminded of the 1st and only time i tried to do mysllf in. It was a few years ago and i was having a really hard time. I was in hospital after getting my stomach pumped and i was listening to the radio on my walkman. All of a sudden Freddie came on and after listening to the lyrics i had something to live for afterall.
