Greenpeace/CIA conspiring to destroy Australian coal

Post by Alkaloid »

According to mining magnate Clive Palmer. Between this and Gina's 'poetry' I think it's more likely someone slipped something into the water at the last Huttmining collective bigwig gathering.

Linky
Mining magnate Clive Palmer has accused the Australian Greens and Queensland environmental campaigners of "treason" in conspiring with US powers to destroy the nation's coal industry.

Mr Palmer was expected to give his response to the passing of the Gillard government's mining tax at a media conference called this afternoon, but the multi-billionaire was concerned only with perceived collusion between the United States' Central Intelligence Agency and the environmental lobby.

Mr Palmer turned his attention to a report by Greenpeace and other anti-coal groups, titled Stopping the Australian Coal Export Boom, which outlined an environmental campaign designed to disrupt and delay the expansion of the industry.

While brandishing a copy of the report this afternoon, Mr Palmer said it was the result of a CIA conspiracy involving the US-based Rockefeller Foundation.

"This is funded by the CIA," he said.

"You only have to go back and read ... the report to the US Congress that sets up the Rockefeller Foundation as a conduit of CIA funding.

"You only have to look at the secret budget which was passed by Congress last year - bigger than our whole national economy - with the CIA to ensure that.

"You only have to read the reports to US Congress where the CIA reported to the president that their role was to ensure the US competitive advantage - that's how you know it's funded by the CIA."

Mr Palmer argued descendants of US oil magnate John Rockefeller had bankrolled the Greenpeace report, in a bid to disrupt and damage the Australian coal industry.

The author of the report, Greenpeace senior campaigner John Hepburn, strongly refuted the accusations, saying Greenpeace's cause was funded by tens of thousands of individuals across Australia.

‘‘First up, Greenpeace does not accept funding from the CIA, nor from any other secret service for that matter,’’ he said.

‘‘Neither do we accept money from any government or corporation.

‘‘Right now, the scale and speed of the coal export boom are out of control. Clive Palmer's vast proposed 'China First' mine would destroy Bimblebox nature refuge and he is part of a plan to build the world's biggest coal port at Abbot Point, in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.’’

Mr Palmer went on to say that the document confirmed local environmental campaigners, including Lock the Gate Alliance president Drew Hutton and Greens leader Bob Brown, were improperly collaborating with foreign multinationals.

"The Greens have not been providing you with the full information about where their money comes from or what it's about," he said.

"I think the Greens [candidates] in this upcoming state election ... should resign if they're being funded by an offshore political power.

"It's paramount to treason and something needs to be done about it."

Greens Leader Bob Brown held a press conference in Canberra this evening to refute the allegations.

Senator Brown said that even though Mr Palmer's claim about the Greens CIA links were "extraordinary" and "manifestly untrue", they had to be taken seriously because Mr Palmer was a key financial backer to the Queensland Liberal National Party.

"They're very serious accusations made by a person who is going to be a chief confidant and advisor to Campbell Newman, were he to become premier on Saturday," Senator Brown said.

Senator Brown said that Greens candidates would still be contesting the state election and called on Queensland Liberal National Leader Campbell Newman to repudiate Mr Palmer's attack on his party.

"[The Greens] are proudly part of the Queensland election campaign," he said.

The Greens Leader said he believed that Mr Palmer genuinely believed the CIA or the Rockefeller Foundation has links with the Greens because it is Mr Palmer's practice to bankroll political campaigns.

"He therefore assumes that other people are into it like he is," Senator Brown said.

Mr Hutton said Mr Palmer had shown through his comments that he was "massively confused".

“In the US, various philanthropic organisations have funded environmental groups and community groups to legally challenge big mining companies who are conducting inappropriate development. And they are beating them in court," he said.

“It should come as no surprise to anybody that environmental non-government organisations would try to access the same sorts of philanthropic organisations to be able to get funding to groups who are doing the same thing here in Australia.”

Mr Hutton said he knew of no organisations in Australia which had received such funding.

“Neither the Lock the Gate Alliance, nor any other environment group that I’m aware of, is receiving any donations from the Rockefeller Foundation or any other overseas group,” he said.

Mr Hutton, who described Mr Palmer’s comments as "bizarre", said the Rockefeller Foundation had no involvement in the report, monetary or otherwise.

“That report that he’s referring to is an attempt by environmental NGOs to try to get funding for activities opposing the massive expansion of coal mining that’s going on in Australia,” he said.

“It should come as a surprise to nobody that environmental organisations are wanting to limit the expansion of coal mining.”

Mr Palmer made little mention of mining tax legislation, passed last night in the Senate, saying he had no concern with it.

"I don't care about any tax. It won't affect my life one way or the other," he said.

Mr Palmer said the controversial tax, which aims to distribute the spoils of Australia's mining boom, would have no affect on his businesses.

"It probably won't cost me anything, because I'm not mining anything that comes under the classification of it. So, you know, it's not something that's worried me," he said.

Mr Palmer said he would not join Australia's third largest iron ore miner, Fortescue Metals, owned by Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest, in mounting a legal challenge.

"Certainly Andrew Forrest has indicated he'll do that - he has major concerns with it, because it affects him, affects his business and affects the ability of his workers," Mr Palmer said.

"You only have to read the reports to US Congress where the CIA reported to the president that their role was to ensure the US competitive advantage - that's how you know it's funded by the CIA."
Along with the "Stopping the Australian Coal Export Boom" report, that's three reports that he encourages people to go and read: one that proves the CIA considers it their job to ensure US competitive advantage, one that proves the Rockefeller Foundation is a conduit of CIA funding and one that proves that Greenpeace's report is funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. That's not actually an unreasonable grounds for claiming Greenpeace is being used as a cat's-paw by the CIA, but only if he can actually back it up with cites, telling people where those other two reports are so that they can verify these supposedly obvious steps for themselves.

And of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that the contents of Greenpeace's report are false.

Clive Palmer was already considered a bit strange by the public and had a bad habit of talking out of his arse. This simply changes the perception to a rich crazy guy who doesn't pay taxes but complains loudly about government taxes.

It's my understanding that if Australia keeps exporting coal to China, they're signing their own death warrant for the livability of their nation due to the drastic environmental changes caused by emissions.

It's less they are outraged by what he said than laughing at him for saying it. Arbib has always been one to suck US cock and it hasn't really been a secret, so him trying to ingratiate himself with the US government isn't surprising. Palmer seems to have got pissed, gone to a press conference and declared that the CIA is out to destroy his business. Its just weird.

Death warrant might be a bit of a drastic term, but long term negative repercussions if serious action on global warming isn't taken are a pretty solid bet, yes.

I am pretty sure most of China's coal consumption is from their own internal production. Now in the future when they have increase energy demand, the picture may change. Of course we should start marketing uranium to them. Less polluting than coal.

The article I was reading a while back stated that even if Australia manages to cut its coal emissions almost to zero, if they keep exporting coal to China at the current rate it won't matter. The article was in an issue of Rolling Stone, I don't recall the issue number, unfortunately.

Chinese domestic coal production has tripled since 2000 to over 3 billion tons per year. Australia exports about 50 million tons to China, though this is expected to rise massively in the next few years, and comes out of total Australian production of about 500 million tons, of which about half is exported. China actually exports far more coal then it imports from Australia, because they don't want the lower grades and have massive internal transportation problems. They are however still a net importer.

The largest consumers of Australian coal are Australia itself, then Japan, China, India, South Korea and Taiwan in that order. Japan is 40% of the export total, everyone else has under half of what Japan eats, and Japan's consumption is now rising rapidly because all the nuke plants are switched off or soon to shutdown and that's forcing the coal plants to work as hard as possible. So... China is an issue but focusing on them is missing the big picture.

Well this is fucking lovely, the man is either truly delusional or actually evil.

The Age
Mining magnate Clive Palmer does not regret saying the Greens were conspiring with the CIA against Australia's resources industry, because his comments served their purpose.

Mr Palmer told reporters in Brisbane today the claims he made last week provided enough distraction from the Queensland election campaign for negative aspects of the Liberal National Party to be overlooked.

He said the fact the claims were taken up by Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan and covered extensively in the media helped the LNP's campaign in Queensland.

"It took a great lot of attention off some of the negative aspects of the election. That was a very good thing," he said.

"It's wonderful that all of you could play a small role in having Campbell Newman elected as premier of Queensland, so well done, you all deserve a round of applause."

Asked if he had made up the claims, Mr Palmer told reporters he did not think the CIA was involved with the Greens or Greenpeace as he had previously suggested.

"That's something I wouldn't say at this stage," he said.

"A mistake doesn't become an error until you refuse to correct it, so I'm still thinking about that one.

"But let me just say I don't regret having made that statement."

Mr Palmer launched the extraordinary attack on the Greens and environmentalists during a media conference last week, saying they were funded by the US spy agency to undermine Australia’s national economy.

A leaked plan by an Australian anti-coal group to thwart coal projects was proof, he said at the time.

Mr Palmer said the document showed the anti-coal group was funded by the US Rockefeller Foundation, an American philanthropic group he described as a conduit of the CIA and the US government.

He said on Monday it was clear Greenpeace was receiving funding from the foundation but did not suggest the CIA was behind it for political reasons.

‘‘Who can say where they (the foundation) get their funding from?’’ he said.

‘‘All we can say really is that ... (when they were) founded in 1974 that half of their funding came from the Central Intelligence Agency in the United States.

‘‘And I know that’s 40 years ago. It may not be the case now.’’

Mr Palmer’s claim made national headlines, prompting Queensland and federal politicians, including Ms Gillard and Mr Swan, to comment on its credibility.

Anti-coal seam gas activist Drew Hutton threatened to sue Mr Palmer after the billionaire referred to him as a ‘‘tool of the US government’’.

Mr Hutton said Mr Palmer owed him a public apology.

‘‘I was the one person he named quite explicitly and he refused to back away from the assertion that I was an CIA operative,’’ Mr Hutton said.

‘‘It’s a despicable thing to defame someone for political advantage.’’Mr Hutton said he would not pursue a defamation lawsuit.

‘‘It’s a stupid action on his part and I am more concerned about his mental health than I am about my own good name,’’ he said.

He feared Premier Campbell Newman would not have the ‘‘gumption’’ to stand up to Mr Palmer, the LNP’s biggest donor.
I love this. Taking money from overseas is undemocratic and treason, but making an absurd statement to try and stop people looking at flaws in your supported party is apparently a-ok.

Evil, not delusional. If he actually believed the CIA was using Greenpeace as a cat's-paw, that would make him either correct, mistaken or stupid/delusional. Not believing it but saying it anyway because it is useful to do so puts him on the level of Fox News.

I'm willing to believe that he said it and truly believed it and is just bullshitting about having a cunning plan now because everyone's laughing at him, because Newman was always going to win in a landslide and if this was actually his plan it's a very weird one.
