See the other thread. Microsoft's response to dropping profits is to force everyone onto a Palladium/.NET infrastructure where software is rented as a service and all user data is stored on central servers controlled by Microsoft.
Do you know when this will be put into effect? I'm gonna get a new computer sometime this year and I don't want it infested by Palladium/.NET.
Its easy enough to solve, specify that you dont want Xp and get linux instead.
Actually agreements with M$ make this difficult. Just tell a friend to build one for you.

The last Microsoft OS without .NET hooks was Windows 2000 with SP2 installed.

Win2K SP3 and XP both have some degree of .NET infestation although it remains unknown how much of the infestation is used. Note also that the license terms for W2K SP3 and Win XP both allow Microsoft to break into your computer without your permission and do whatever they want whenever they want.

Win2K SP2 is the last version of Windows that's safe for end users.

That is why I like SETI.

So, Microsoft wants to control all PC use and nobody will stop them? And the results would be far worse than having to use a glitchy OS, like having our privacy invaded? We're screwed, unless Microsoft decides not to be so greedy and corrupt.

That's interesting. I use OpenOffice on SuSE Linux 8.1, although I can't get the PowerPoint clone to work correctly (it shuts down when I try to save anything).

I wonder if went over any UK servers, they could be done under the computer misuse act then and that has I think a maximum penalty of 5 years in jail.

But, on topic... why is it that no one in Congress has pointed out that Palladium would be a clear violation of privacy?

It was sarcasm. Besides, M$ (or was it just Gates) really did say open source was "unamerican"

It wasn't sarcasm. I was making an oblique reference to Microsoft's position on open source and the fact that US government has effectively given Microsoft unconditional backing to break the law in any way it sees fit.

It's easy!

Have a Win2K machine completely disconnected from the net sit in
a corner and use THAT to play games, and use Linux for the net!

I think the only problem to that would be that computer games will become more graphics-intensive and such as time goes on. Eventually you'll have to upgrade and in the case that Microsoft somehow gets Palladium onto all computers, then you're screwed gamewise.

Unless you get someone to build you the comp. Then maybe you can still be on the safe side.

XP is the last Windows OS I'll ever use. At present I'm running a dual-boot XP Pro / Mandrake 9 box and, apart from a few glitches, gaming is the only thing I can't fully do in Linux.

But this will change, better emulation is being developed, X is constantly being improved. I just read on slashdot that Linus is putting in better process interactivity in the 2.6.x kernel. Makes the X windows system far more responsive, which will be good for the gaming industry.

I highly reccomend Mandrake 9 to any newbies thinking of trying Linux; reasonably powerful, most painless installation and comes with a shitload of stuff.

Linux is shit. I just installed a NATO Font pack program from here a few
hours ago:

http://www.mapsymbs.com/

and already, I'm cranking out stuff like this:

Whereas with Linux, if I wanted to install a freeware program, I'd
have to find the goddamned tarball, find a compiler, and then
fucking compile it myself...

The only Linux program that was worth shit, was OpenOffice, since
it had a decent installer...

Linux is not shit. It's superior to any Windows in OS structure, stability, and a more. Plus, it's free and it has none of all the strings attached to Windows and its programs.

I'm sure Wong and a few others can elaborate on this much beter than I can.
