Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
There we go, Prologue Post and Decription further updated!
Going to hold off a little on the MATHS! for my miltiary, as I'm going to see if I get anymore incoming trade routes to see just how much GDP I have to play with for it.

This odyssey, this, exodus. Do we journey toward the promised land, or into the valley of the kings? Three decades ago I envisioned a new future for our species, and now that we are on the brink of realizing my dream, I feel only solitude, and regret. Has my entire life's work been a fool's crusade? Have I led my people into this desert, only to die?

I am always quite happy to accept more incoming trade routes Beowulf.
If the Umerians arn't interested in my last trade route I'd also be more then happy to wing it your way, the Authority would like the Clansmen.

I have two outbound ones left. Of the seven I have right now, five have inbound routes back. The exceptions are the Screworlders and the Bees and that may just be a communication error.

EDIT: This may ring a little false, but let's not totally finalize trade routes until we know what the map looks like.
I also have fond hopes that a few more people will join if we give it some time. If anyone wants to invite a friend in, this would be a good time- we're a little on the slim side for the game to sustain critical mass, in my opinion.

@OmegaChief: Sure. Are you slinging out an outbound one towards me, too?

Speaking of which, the NenAltKik is one of the governments within the Hegemony, and they wouldn't mind trading to the fringe worlds if you want to have some more allosaurus prefab homes and dinosaur docudramas.Simon_Jester wrote: That's partly intentional, but it creates a supply/demand pattern that's just impossible to resist. Sure. We can have the various Kritarchy vassal states doing all this stuff- dinosaur prefab houses, Philosopher-kingdom... somethings, maybe have that system full of rogues run some ludicrously horrible sweatshops turning out portable communicators that sell by the billions on the Umerian core worlds because MiniProd can't be bothered to manufacture such a frivolous thing.Akhlut wrote:Speaking of which, the NenAltKik is one of the governments within the Hegemony, and they wouldn't mind trading to the fringe worlds if you want to have some more allosaurus prefab homes and dinosaur docudramas.Simon_Jester wrote: That's partly intentional, but it creates a supply/demand pattern that's just impossible to resist. Meanwhile, the Umerians are trading back to the Kritarch vassal states in the form of complex machinery and whatnot that actually comes with instruction manuals and tech support instead of "PUNY HUMAN, YOU CANNOT BEGIN TO COMPREHEND THE GLORY OF THESE TOOLS, WHICH WERE DEVELOPED WHEN YOUR RACE STILL THOUGHT ROCKS WERE EDIBLE!"
How does that sound?

Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
Though speaking of working out trade routes and buddy-buddying and adveseries and all that, when are we considering getting at least a preliminary map to give us some idea of who our neighbours might be?

Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
I believe the answer to that will be "Soon" or "When it is finished." It takes time to draw a map up and place everyone on it, you know.
Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
If I may be a bit quick to jump on the "preliminary map" bandwagon, I want to state that my only requirements are to have The Hub to be (roughly) at the center of the Map, and to have Terminus and Ascension sufficiently close to the Hub as to be within ordinary Warp-gate jump range. Another requirements is that the 8 sectors surrounding Terminus are, at least partially, big hyperspace shoals [to represent the shoals that are may be generated by The-PLanet-That-Is-Death].
As for the Nomad Sectors, they will be placed only at the end, when everyone else will have defined their territories.
...
Question : if I have a "chain" of three warp-gates (A, B and C), how quickly can I get a ship X through gate A to B, then through B to C ? Is that counted in seconds, minutes, hours, or more ?

Well yea, but we need like a grid or something to even start working out where to put our nationsKhorneFlakes wrote:I believe the answer to that will be "Soon" or "When it is finished." It takes time to draw a map up and place everyone on it, you know.

Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
Simon largely controls where the nations are put, since the other game mods don't seem to be participating in SDNW5. You can ask where to be placed, or help him find a place to put you, but in the end Simon has the final say on where you go. If you want to talk about with him, you should probably just ask.
EDIT: Oh, and to avoid doubleposting, I have decided to use the 5 NCP that I initially never used, originally being satisfied with 26 NCP, but I have had second thoughts.

Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
That's what I was saying. I want to give it a bit more time and get in touch with some more people. I know you guys are chomping at the bit, but for the sake of making the game work, I don't want to rush it.Darkevilme wrote:Lets at least see if a second recruitment drive will push us over critical mass before we start drawing up the map huh?
I'll see what I can do.Rabid wrote:If I may be a bit quick to jump on the "preliminary map" bandwagon, I want to state that my only requirements are to have The Hub to be (roughly) at the center of the Map, and to have Terminus and Ascension sufficiently close to the Hub as to be within ordinary Warp-gate jump range. The ship would have to jump A -> B, circle round and enter B and go to C. If you say it takes seconds I'll wince. If someone tells you it takes several hours, spit in their eye.Question : if I have a "chain" of three warp-gates (A, B and C), how quickly can I get a ship X through gate A to B, then through B to C ? I am sorry, but I will be quite busy for a good while- much of next week, really. I'll ask around to see if any of my friends would care to lend me a hand. If we could start with a blank grid similar to the SDNW4 map, that would be good.OmegaChief wrote:Though speaking of working out trade routes and buddy-buddying and adveseries and all that, when are we considering getting at least a preliminary map to give us some idea of who our neighbours might be?
Remember, I had actually planned to take the game start process a little slower and more leisurely; it's turning out to have more momentum than I expected, which is probably a good thing but does create its own problems.
Actually, can we PLEASE try to identify a backup mod or two? Is there anyone here who's widely trusted and regarded in a favorable way?KhorneFlakes wrote:Simon largely controls where the nations are put, since the other game mods don't seem to be participating in SDNW5.
I'm going to try and make the mapping process as consensual as possible. I'm not going to just plunk people down willy-nilly, with the single exception that people whose willingness to play the game consistently is in doubt really belong toward the edges of the map so they don't get in the way.You can ask where to be placed, or help him find a place to put you, but in the end Simon has the final say on where you go. If you want to talk about with him, you should probably just ask.
The reason I haven't seriously started mapping is because of time more than anything else- it's only been a week since we started and I haven't had a day when it felt right to put in that kind of time.
I'm still hoping, also, for a few more joiners- and anyone who joins after we start drawing the map has less freedom than the people who join before.
[/quote]Wait, what?EDIT: Oh, and to avoid doubleposting, I have decided to use the 5 NCP that I initially never used, originally being satisfied with 26 NCP, but I have had second thoughts.
