SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
BY the way, I'll leave this tidbit of information there :
The Stellar Nation has already gone to Holy War, once. It was a long time ago, a few centuries after its creation.
It took place in the sector that is today known as "The Hub". A local polity was, shall we say, pissed-off that Cradle was being converted to the Doxa, and slowly slipping from its grasp. So they declared war on the Stellar Nation, and persecuted the Believers.
It all escalated when the Enemy tried to violently put down a rebellion in Cradle. The Stellar Nation held a vote, like what has been presented above, and the result was clear. It wasn't -just- war anymore. It was Holy War. The Taint had to be Purged.
So an ultimatum was sent :
"You will cease your persecution of the Believers and Withdraw from Cradle. You have 72 hours."
The Enemy laughed at the ultimatum.
Its Capital Planet was turned to ash - literal ashes from massive atomic and orbital bombardment - in the following week. The other habitable worlds of the Hub, now independent under protectorate of the Stellar Nation, are the remains of this Empire which surrendered.
This conflict is also the reason why, even if the Community may not be appreciated equally by all ( ), until today everyone in the Known Galaxy has been very cautious not to piss-off the Doxa in a way that could result in Holy War...

Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
The "USS Penis Envy" is a complete white elephant by the military. It's basically an eight-kilometer-long railgun that fires a 100-200 meter projectile at a planet at several currently undetermined multiples of the speed of sound in order to trigger a massive version of the K-T extinction event. It's something from the three-way Cold War I have planned between my Bastian Empire, Akhlut's Gray Kritarchy, and TimothyC's Kryptonian Empire. As it's only meant to be a last "fuck you" measure, it ends up undermining the defense of the Empire because that could have built a good number of capital ships. The current Emperor is trying to get it decommissioned because it's mostly useless and it's a symbol of how profligate the military-industrial complex in the Empire has gotten. If you make him have to use it, that kind of screws up his disarmament plan.cadbrowser wrote:Pardon my ignorance but I don't know what this means. Can you explain?Panzersharkcat wrote:Yeah, and if things come to Exterminatus against the Replicator guys, I'd actually have a justified use for the "USS Penis Envy."
EDIT: I think it was Rogue Ice that came up with the name. The real name is probably going to be Big Bertha or the Crushinator.

Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
Not sure it has to be humans per se, just a sentient life form. IOW...the only sentient life forms will be the AI's on their respective Primary Home worlds in whatever star system they take that had life forms. Does that make sense?Skywalker_T-65 wrote:That is what Panzer calls his superweapon/supership. In other words, if it came to a war to destroy your Replicator guys, he would pull it out of mothballs. And its entirely possible to have your nation be around, while not being attacked. Some nations wouldn't have a problem (I have a sinking suspicion that the Gray's wouldn't care as long as you kept humans in check). Really depends on where you end up on the map.
So, say a sector is populated with 5 star systems and 1 has sentient life...that sector would have a self aware Prime AI with 4 secondary AI's that support it.
At least that's how I see it in "my" part of the world working based on my current understanding of the rules so far.
So if a different sector had 5 star sytems and no sentient life, the they would be all seeded with secondary AI's that are being fought over by neighboring Primary AI's.

You know...why am I suddenly feeling happy that the Nation is my ally? It's probably nothing
Also, cadbrowser, I didn't mean that your AI has any problem with humans per-say, just that the Gray's would probably leave you alone due to keeping any nearby human power in check (of course, that is just my interpretation, who knows how Akhlut feels). Also...your worlds populations are going to be very small if you go that route. Might want to convert the typical billions that a Sector would normally have to billions of robots (Replicators if you will). Unless the secondary AI's make up for that population deficiency.

Man oh man, that is going to cause some serious tension between the League and Nomads v1. A nation that the League has a history of skirmishing with and glaring at threateningly that has a history of genocide? MAN that pushes some League buttons in a big way. *cackles*

@Panzersharkcat
Hmmm...if you have only 1 then I would see it makeing a Primary AI world reduced to another Secondary AI in the same sector. As they would just affect the life system there. The world could still be converted to a mining one.
Imagine the primary world looking like a planet sized verson of the Death Star (or closer to a borg type planet).
@Skywalker_T-65
I didn't take it that way...was just saying it didn't have to be humans that they are "enslaving" is all. But I understand where you are getting at as well. As far as the robot population, yes, that's what I was thinking of doing. The number of actual sentient beings enslaved is irrelevent for "this" world.
No, the Secondary AIs would be more akeen to a massive complex (like machine city in the Matrix) that aims to manage it's robot population. Primary AIs would be "higher up" in the chain so to speak and larger; only managing a planet with sentinet lifeforms while controlling the secondary AI's.

Yes, I'm really happy that I am allies with the Nation now. I don't think the Arcadians would appreciate being bombed back to the stone age (at the least...and it would be the second time for the Furlings! ). Speaking of which, I need to start thinking of someone who could have done that to them. Oh the possibilities...

I'm allied with the Braxian Collective, somewhat hostile to the Grays and Kryptonians, and neutral to everyone else. Anyway, that still can't be good for you. It'd leave quite a lot of wreckage and the dust that spreads all over can't be good for small machinery.

Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
There isn't really a political alliance thread, most of it is sorted either on this thread or via PMs/various ways of players communicating, though a lot of us are waiting for a map before we make big alliance decisions.
This odyssey, this, exodus. Do we journey toward the promised land, or into the valley of the kings? Three decades ago I envisioned a new future for our species, and now that we are on the brink of realizing my dream, I feel only solitude, and regret. Has my entire life's work been a fool's crusade? Have I led my people into this desert, only to die?

Re: SDNW5 Preliminary Discussion Thread
No there isn't an ally thread. Basically, if you want an ally the best way to do it is send a trade route their way. But you can only do that once you have NCP. And it has to be a mutual thing to, you can't just declare someone your ally. But you need your NCP roll first. And it might be prudent to look at the Nation Description thread first and see who you want to be an ally.

When I was speaking about the fact that the Nation is really Peace-loving and Hate war, I meant it. They aren't known for their aggressiveness. It's just that when they're pissed enough to do something, they generally don't do half-measures.
But eh!, we'll see when we get there.
Just for everyone to better orient their RP toward the Nation, here are some basics everyone is supposed to know :
- One of the reason the Doxa was created is to protect and serve the Community and the Believers.
- They always offer their humanitarian help in times of disaster. The First Contact between the Nation and the League of Thought was two dozen Communes offering their help after stumbling on the ruins of their planet of origin. They were quickly sent their way... ( )
- Depending on the circumstances, they can be VERY protective of their own.
- The Doxa always strive for a peaceful solution first and foremost. They always give you the option to surrender.
- But if you don't surrender, expect no pity on their part. Sure they'll honestly mourn your loss and the unnecessary use of violence, but, well, you'll be dead all the same.
- But whatever you do, never, NEVER piss-off the Doxa. You don't want to see them when they are angry. There's a dead planet in the Hub sector testament to what happen when they do get angry.

And, as counterintuitive as it is from a strategy-gaming standpoint, please try to avoid forming massive mutual powerblocs. They're one of the most structurally-unhealthy things that can exist in games like this, and at the same time from a strategy-gaming perspective they look like a great idea. That's a trap.

You don't need to worry about me getting in some massive powerbloc. Space Sweden remember? Though I doubt that we will let a big bloc form...most likely if any one player starts getting too many allies Simon will make the map to where they aren't near each other. At least that is what I would do anyway...

No, but you have to promise to pay some attention to the game if you want to play. We haven't even started drawing a map yet.
So, a macronation? Or are you considering playing a micronation? Your call.
