C&C Generals question

Post by Captain tycho »

Well, I picked up C&C Generals a couple of days ago and only got around to playing it today. So, I happily booted up my super-powered gaming computer and installed it. So far, no problems. I start up the game, movie runs smoothly, then all of a sudden when the menu screen is brought up it just gets slower. Not by a terrible amount, but enough that it's noticeable. I moved the mouse around a bit, and it moved like a snail, and had the tendency to dissapear alot. So, I started up a skirmish, and when I get to the main battle screen, guess what? Instead of nice terrain I get a black ground. Empty space. By now the game is moving slower than hell, and the terrain is invisible. :? All the structure and unit graphics are fine, but the terrain is still a sea of darkness. And it's still moving slow.
I checked the options menu, set the detail to low in hopes of speeding it up. No sucess. Background the same, still fucking slow. I now checked the memory, still found I had plenty left. I checked my drivers, found they were totally up to date. I disabled the auto-virus program (which it says to turn off before playing), and.......zip. Same damn thing. 3 reinstallations later, same thing. Dammit, I've had it up to my head in this computer. All my other games work just great, inculding Warcraft 3 and Master of Orion, both of which are graphic hogs. All the normal computer functions work perfectly, but no matter what I do, C&C is thw same.
What is wrong? :?:

Triple? No, no, no, look again: quintuple.

I think that has to be a record.

Go for the gold!
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Well EA's motto is right I suppose..."Challenge Everything" including your computer...

C&C Generals is really a performance hog...it drains resources like no tomorrow...

As for why that's happening...I would think it to be an incompatible VidCard...but unless you are still using a 3dfx card I doubt that is the case...

What version of DirectX do you have?

I have an Athlon XP 1.53GHz, ATI Radeon 8500LE/128MB and 512MB RAM and it runs well at 800x600 with all eye-candy options set to max and 4X ansiotropic filtering enabled (anti-aliasing, OTOH, kills performance)

I've got it running smoothly on two PC's:
  1. 1.4GHz Celeron with GeForce2 MX video card
  2. 1.7GHz Celeron with GeForce2 GTS video card
This isn't exactly bleeding-edge hardware, and the game runs just fine on mine. Have you tried the EA support forums?
