Dutch Roman Catholic Church castrated at least 10 boys

Dutch Roman Catholic Church 'castrated at least 10 boys'
At least 10 teenage boys or young men under the age of 21 were surgically castrated "to get rid of homosexuality" while in the care of the Dutch Roman Catholic Church in the 1950s.

Evidence of the castrations has emerged amid controversy that it was not included in the findings of an official investigation into sexual abuse within the church last year.

The NRC Handelsblad newspaper identified Henk Heithuis who was castrated in 1956, while a minor, after reporting priests to the police for abusing him in a Catholic boarding home.

Joep Dohmen, the investigative journalist who uncovered the Heithuis case, also found evidence of at least nine other castrations. "These cases are anonymous and can no longer be traced," he said. "There will be many more. But the question is whether those boys, now old men, will want to tell their story."

Mr Heithuis died in a car crash in 1958, two years after being castrated at the age of 20, while under the age of majority, which was then 21.

In 1956 he had accused Catholic clergy of sexually abusing him in his Church run care home.

Two clergymen were convicted of abuse but Mr Heithuis, a victim, was nonetheless transferred by police to a Catholic psychiatric hospital before being admitted to the St. Joseph Hospital in Veghel later that year.

There, court papers confirm, he was castrated "at his own request", despite no submission of his written consent. Sources told Mr Dohmen that the surgical removal of testicles was regarded as a treatment for homosexuality and also as a punishment for those who accused clergy of sexual abuse.

Cornelius Rogge, 79, a well-known Dutch sculptor whose family knew Mr Heithuis in the 1950s, reported the castration to an official inquiry into abuse within the Catholic Church. But his evidence was ignored.

"We once asked Henk to drop his pants when the women were gone. He did that. He was maimed totally. It was a huge shock," he said.

Last December, an official investigation by Wim Deetman, a former Dutch minister, received 1,800 reports of sexual abuse by clergy or volunteers within Dutch Catholic dioceses in the period since 1945.

The Deetman inquiry received a report of the Heithuis case from Mr Rogge but it was not followed up because "there were few leads for further research".

Evidence emerged on Monday that government inspectors were aware that minors were being castrated while in Catholic-run psychiatric institutions.

Minutes of meetings held in the 1950s show that inspectors were present when castrations were discussed. The documents also reveal that the Catholic staff did not think parents needed to be involved.

There are also allegations that Vic Marijnen, a former Dutch Prime Minister, who died in 1975, was linked to the case.

In 1956, Mr Marijnen was the chairman of the Gelderland children's home where Mr Heithuis and other children were abused. He intervened to have prison sentences dropped against several priests convicted of abusing children.

Dutch MPs will today call for a parliamentary investigation into the allegations.

"I am shocked that boys were being castrated in the 1950s," said Khadija Arib, a Labour MP. "I want an independent investigation. We must find out how many cases there were, who knew about it and why the government did not act."
Blaming the victim for being raped is a disgusting practice, but how fucked up of a cult do you have to be to go as far castrating the victim. It's not like they were being traumatized enough already.

And so the Catholic Church continues to bury itself deeper under a growing mound of vile acts and lawsuits. Sometimes, old, big institutions will hang themselves instead of being dismantled by an outside force, and cases like this give the church more rope.

Take heart, every bit of bad publicity helps erode any trust and possible aid the church may get.

 Just when I think the Catholic Church can't sink any lower into depravity and hypocrisy, they surprise me yet again. Perhaps other nations should do as the People's Republic of China does, and force priests to place their host nations' interests ABOVE that of the church- it's not as if any nation has committed (or attempted to justify) worse behavior than the Catholic Church.
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

Wow.

I dread what will turn up in countries the church had even more of a hold over, like Ireland or Spain.

Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? Do remember this happened over fifty years ago. I'm not sure they can "dig themselves in deeper" now by something they did in the past before these scandals broke out.

You know they're just going to argue "we don't do that anymore." And they'd probably even be right; I'd be pretty surprised if any cases of this have happened in the past generation.

If you want to blow up a large institution, it's easier to find evidence of present abuses than ones far enough in the past to barely be within living memory. Seldom has any organization collapsed because people found out about something it did sixty years ago.

Just to remember, Great Britain chemically castrated homosexuals during the same time period; the Catholic hierarchy wasn't the only ones doing it. Lobotomies were a pretty common 'treatment' then too.

People forget how recently the medical consensus on human-behavior issues was basically something out of the Dark Ages.

Hell, the british government even did it to Alan Turing, leading to his suicide (or assassination), and incidentally, the Apple logo

Hell, during that period, homosexuals were not even released post-holocaust. When the concentration camps were liberated, the british and american administrators during the occupation called them legitimate criminals (despite the decriminalization of homosexuality that was passed during the late Weimar Republic and repealed by the Nazis and similar decriminalization in many many other parts of europe) and many were kept in prison. Granted, they were not kept in the camps, and the survivors got "time served" for the time spent in death camps with the remainder spent in friendlier prisons...

Sorry. Sore point for me.

Then there is all the other shit. Mengele was not the only Horrible doctor. The US used its soldiers as lab rats to study the effects of dehydration by stripping them naked and setting them loose in death valley with no water. Then there were consent (and knowledge) free tests of the effects of radiation, various diseases (like syphilis, and not just in Tuskeegee), intentionally infecting Guatemala with Gonorrhea, mass rape on the eastern front, the rape of Nanking, the Holocaust, the existence of North Korea.

So, to say that no organization was worse than the RCC is just fucking silly.

...You did notice the link, right?

Also, I believe the official Apple statement on the claim that their logo is related to Turing's suicide is "It isn't, but we wish we'd thought of it." I could be wrong about that.

I did not, and if the logo is coincidence, we have entered into a realm of surreality worthy of Salvador Dolly

I did. Disgusting...but sadly pretty par the course for the treatment of natives by anglo-american colonial systems though. Especially Native Americans.

Falls out of the time period as well - I mean, the abuses of the magdalenes have been pretty well covered as well.

I am dreading the sick shit that happened in the fifties-eighties which will inevitably come to light in a few years I think.

Really?

I mean, an apple doesn't strike me as being all that unlikely a logo for a corporation. Remember, rainbows have symbolic associations other than "gay pride symbol," and apples have associations with things other than Alan Turing's suicide. Isaac Newton comes to mind, as does education in general.

Half-eaten. Rainbow. Computer science. Sure there are other things it can be derived from. That confluence occurring by chance is just... weird.

Mutilating children to create castrato for the Church was only made illegal in Italy in 1870, after it had been going on openly for hundreds of years, and pretty much only then because Italy forced a national government down the throat of the Vatican. Its really not that surprising they'd still do it to try to silence the lying homo threat to the natural order less than a hundred years later and get away with it.

I never knew about all those connotations that apple apparently had, really. Far as I was concerned, Steve Jobs decided to name his company after a fruit, and so they naturally picked the one he named it after for the company logo.
